The Jags will be the worst 9-7 team in NFL history.

I thought that honor

belonged to the 2008 Arizona Cardinals?

Ha ha ha

The worst 13-3 team in NFL history was the ’06 Bears

No

At least this decade, that honor has to go to the 2001 Bears. I have never seen a more smoke and mirrors 13-3 ever.

used the tiebreaking procedure

but common games will start to factor in once teams get up the the requirement of 4 in common.

good idea.

We can even save some time by filling in the first line ahead of time.

So if the playoffs started today

We would play the winner of the Pats-Bolts game, right?

And we'd play Cinci in the wildcard

Colts would play the lowest seeded wildcard winner

so in that situation they could play anyone but the Pats or Broncos.

buzzkill!!!

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Nov 10, 2009 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

As much as it pains me to say it, this is entirely possible.

I hate contemplating it, but it is indeed entirely possible. But then again, so’s 11-0. More likely, 10-1 or 9-2.

Here’s to hopin’.

By my count

Doesn’t Cincinnati have the tiebreaker over New England? NFL.com lists them at #3, generally they take tiebreakers into account automatically, but Cincinnati’s strength of victory is better than New England’s, which is the first tiebreaker that applies.

Pittsburgh has the best conference record

They control their own destiny for the 2 seed.

Cincy beat Pittsburgh already

Seedings right now are
1. Colts 8-0
2. Patriots 6-2
3. Bengals 6-2
4. Steelers 6-2
5. Broncos 6-2
6. Chargers 5-3

Obviously, those aren't the "playoffs seedings"..

.. because Steelers would then be at the 5th spot, since they lost to the Bengals and would only be 2nd in their division. And I guess Broncos would move past both the Bengals and the Pats since they beat both of those teams. So could someone please verify that the playoff seedings would look like this, if the PO began tomorrow?

Homefield Adv. : Colts
First-round Bye: Broncos
3rd seed: Pats
4th seed: Bengals
5th seed: Steelers
6th seed: Chargers

by jocre on Nov 10, 2009 8:18 AM EST up reply actions

yeah

so it’s a 4 way tie from 2 to 5. First the Steelers get booted from it since they don’t lead their division. Then the Broncos get the top spot remaining because they have the best in conference record. Pats get the 3 over the Bengals via a stronger margin of victory.

isn't strength of victory just net points per game?

NE has way more net points and both have played 8 games

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 10, 2009 9:04 AM EST up reply actions

Actually

According to about.com, Strength of Victory is the weight of the winning percentages of the teams (in this case) the Bengals and Patriots have beaten.

http://football.about.com/cs/football101/g/gl_strengthofvi.htm

I’m not sure the exact numbers, but the Bengals have beaten better overall competition than the Patriots have. I’d be pretty certain that having beaten the Steelers and Ravens x2, they’ve got a better overall percentage than the Patriots, who have considerably lower quality of wins with both Tampa and Tennessee.

by Nathan S. on Nov 10, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

I assume

Strength of overall schedule taking into account the games the team lost as well. Strength of Victory would only take into account games a team has won. So Denver and Houston don’t factor into Cincinnati’s strength of victory, but would factor into their strength of schedule.

I figure it’s done to reward teams who have not only played better teams, but have also beaten them instead of rewarding teams for playing a harder schedule and having lost to the better teams. So if both teams happen to have an equal strength of victory, the reward would then go to the team who played the tougher overall schedule.

by Nathan S. on Nov 10, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

makes sense, I guess

by shake n bake on Nov 10, 2009 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

Typically it doesn't matter.

It’s extremely rare for a tiebreaking procedure to go past the conference record/division record mark, and even then you still have the common opponents tiebreaker which almost always settles it. I can’t even remember the last time people were even talking about the Strength of Victory tiebreaker going into the final weeks of the season.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Love me some 8-0

I just love that we could go .500 the rest of the year and still put up our traditional 12 win season. Also nice to have a 2-win cushion on the rest of the conference now that the traditional injuries are piling up.

Never approach a vast undertaking with a half-vast plan.

by szquirrel on Nov 10, 2009 9:11 AM EST reply actions

Yep.

It feels good. It even feels better that I will be able to go to at least 1 home playoff game since we basically clinched our division. Playoff games at home are always good.

I'm happy with what I'm seeing

As the Colts play only the Broncos and Patriots here on out that are of any significant concern to the Colts seeding in the playoffs. Sure, we play other teams, but those two are the only ones who can affect us for home field.

As for the Pats being the 3rd seed, they get it based on the Strength of Victory tiebreaker (5th tie breaker). It’s crap. They get it based on two blowout wins over winless teams. Otherwise, the Bengals get it based on facing a much tougher schedule….

Thus far, the Bengals have only played 1 losing team…
