Looking Back at 2005

With the team humming along at 11-0, I just wanted to take a moment and look back at our last run at undefeated-ness.

Star-divide

That 2005 team was truly special. If anyone doesn't know, each and every one of thier first 13 wins in that 13-0 start were by at least a touchdown. Just to point out how ridiculous that is, the 16-0 Pats had only 12 such wins all of that year. That team was just so amazing. I am still convinced that if not for James Dungy's unfortunate and tragic suicide, that team wins the Super Bowl. They were, by far, the best team in the league that year.

Now, what I really wanted to bring up was headed into that San Diego game, I remember us already having home-field locked up. At that time, the starters played the complete game, and I don't really remember any talk of resting starters and not attempting the run at the perfect season. James Dungy's suicide kind of trumped any and all "resting starters" talk after that game. My question is that would the '05 Colts have rested their starters?

Then, assuming we get to 13-0 (which at that point I'm pretty sure the conference would be locked up), do we rest? For whatever reason the media is certain we will, although I have yet to hear a definitive word. I would like to see us go full through the Jets game (Game 15), and rest up in Buffalo, which will most likely be a cold, bad-weather game against a team we may be able to beat without Manning and Wayne anyway. Thoughts?

I would love to see them do that.

There’s a chance I could get to go to the Jets game, (and sit in the owner of Lucas Oil’s box) and I would hate to fly to Indianapolis and then have to see Sorgi for the whole game and only be able to watch Peyton and the starters for a series.

meh

if you can sit in the Lucas suite, it’s worth it even if it’s a high school game. Suite life rules. Easy food access, private bathroom, and you’re not surrounded by crowds full of morons. Can’t be beat. The only downside is that half the people there aren’t especially interested in the game or know their stuff. And you probably shouldn’t say Fuck too many times. But it’s worth the tradeoff. Plus the sight lines from that level are great.

Stop assuming things

Everybodys talking as if we already defeated Tennessee.

True

It’s just natural to speculate. Plus we’re fans. We can assume. I already know that Caldwell and Peyton aren’t looking past Tennessee.

true, it's natural

and you’re right, we as fans can do whatever we want. As long as the players are focused, then it doesn’t really matter. But, it would be “better” if they speculate once we’re 14-0 or something, not when we have one of the toughest games of the season so far right in front of us.
Most talk has been about going undefeated and resting starters instead of looking at the Titans and CJ/VY.

I said "if"

btw, I do NOT want them going undefeated. I don’t ever want anyone going undefeated. Can’t really explain it.

is it because

once someone goes 19-0 NFL becomes college football where 1 loss is made to be the end of the world by everyone involved and you now feel like the season is over which is ridiculous? You’re not playing a video game on god mode, perfection is something that should be rare and unique, not expected?

Never doubt Peyton Manning, he’ll make you look silly
Joseph Addai is a good running back.
Im a douchebag, an asshole, and I'm rarely right.

That's for the players.

We’re fans. Our speculation has no impact, direct or indirect, on the team’s performance.

It’s fun to speculate sometimes.

Nick Harper's Wife

I still blame her for the loss to the Steelers. If she hadn’t stabbed Nick Harper before the game, he would have scored on Jerome Bettis’ fumble.

Damn right.

Why chicks gotta get all stabby?

by beckmania on Dec 2, 2009 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree

She didn’t stab him in the head. He used his half-brain to make a terrible decision instead of taking what should have been the easy way out and running towards either sideline.

That scenario

is my perfect scenario. Play the starters through the first 15 games, and then sit them for the last game, especially since it’s at Buffalo.

Yeah, I honestly don't care that much

about whether we win the final game of the season or not if everything is clinched. Rest the starters so we don’t have a possibility of an injury to one of our key players going into the playoffs. Even if it means going 15-1, although I would be thrilled at 16-0.

I would only rest them the 2nd half against Buffalo

and if they are going for 16-0, I would keep the foot on the gas the entire season.

They have a bye week to rest players, I hope they don’t rest at all during the season but if they do, then I hope it is for the 2nd half of a game or two and not multiple entire games.

I sooo don't care about the undefeated thing.

I want another Lombardi this year.

if the football gods so desire.

Going undefeated really means nothing.

And IMO, the best chance this team has to win another Super Bowl is to keep the starters fresh, but also keep them game ready which means resting if injured but playing otherwise.

2005? I'm so there! Mufufufufufufufufufufufu...

Seriously though, saying that the Colts lost due to Dungy’s family issues unnecessarily cheapens the Steelers victory in that game. They deserved that win, especially after the horrendous officiating for much of the game. The Colts were flat out dominated for three quarters before getting off the mat with help from the zebras.

Whatever

The only bad call that I remember was the INT overturn. The rest of the game had everyday questionable calls that could have gone either way for both teams.

I don’t blame that game on the death of Dungy’s son, but moreso how the team handled the final month of the season as a whole. Dungy’s son’s death was a horrible thing, but I thought that the team would have a better time getting over it by getting back to football instead of resting all the key players for so many weeks so they could answer questions about Dungy for a month straight and barely play football.

I agree

The Colts looked rusty for much of the game. Whether that was because of the Steelers defense, Dungy’s issues, or their one-month rest following the Chargers game will never be known.

They certainly were rusty, but I think mentally they were not ready for football

If one of Coach Cowher’s daughters did the same thing before that game, I’m sure the Seelers would not have played as well as they did. That is one of the hardest things to overcome when it happens to anyone you may know, let alone a man that was absolutely beloved.

Don’t get me wrong, the Steelers absolutely deserved that game, and I would have felt cheap winning off Bettis’ fumble, but I’m just saying that the death effected the way the Colts played. It had to.

I'm STILL sick over that game.

Vandershank’s miss.

But I do remember thinking that it would be really crappy for Bettis to go out like that, his last play resulting in a loss. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still pissed, but I like Bettis so it made it this much easier. (picture about an inch)

Me too

Bettis deserved better. Plus, we did not deserve to win that game. I just wanted it there at the end for Dungy. We were outplayed, we were rusty and the effects of the James Dungy situation had not subsided. It was not our year.
