NFL Discipline Problem

So taking a moment to turn from our beloved Colts being 12-0 and Jim Orgy being put on IR, I wanna talk about the problem in which the NFL disciplines the players. Some where something is really screwed up in this system. I'm not a huge fan of OchoCinco but it's hard not to laugh at his antics. I respect the guy in the fact that he buys up all remaining home game tickets so the game won't get blacked out. But the league is starting to go overboard with fining him for EVERYTHING he does. First he was fined 20 grand for the dollar bill joke with the ref. I think that was a little much. He never attempted to give it to the ref, so why fine the dude for it. Yet Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith punches DiAngelo Hall in the face and gets a $15,000 fine  And now they are fining OchoCinco 30 grand for his sombrero and poncho act last week. Why? Was he hurting anybody? Did he somehow hurt the integrity of the game? No. The league seems to be finding ways to take money from players for anything and everything they do.

Jacob Lacey was fined a huge amount for sliding into the end zone after his pick 6 in the Rams game. Not only did the league review it, they threw the fine out completely. Of course it should never have had to been reviewed because it should have never been issued in the first place. The NFL is suppose to be fun, but how can it be fun when the players are walking on eggshells. I agree if they go overboard they should be slapped with a fine, but so far none of the things OchoCinco has done is worthy of a fine. I mean for goodness sakes, the guy is out there having fun.

And as you know by now, Flozell Adams has been slapped with a 50,000 dollar fine for his dirty hit on Justin Tuck Sunday. That fine was warranted and the fat turd should have gotten a hell of lot more. Adams has a total of 75,000 dollars worth of fines this year for dirty play. The one got for tripping Justin Tuck earlier this year could have cost Tuck his season, yet Adams walked away with a 15 yard penalty and $12,500. The guy has a history of dirt play, yet instead of suspending him, the league just takes his money. Adams needs to sit his ass on the bench for a few games without pay.

The priorities of NFL seem to be a little screwed up.

As far as Chad 85 goes,

I think that should be between the Coachs and their org. and Chad. If they want to discipline him fine. It’s the ultra violence on the field that should be the top priority.

To me this is the correct approach.

But I’ll go even farther and say that that’s essentially what the league is doing, priority wise. I mean, look at the fines 85 is receiving – he’s the biggest offender of the celebration rule in the league, and purposefully violated it again, and only got a $30,000 fine. While that’s a lot of money to me, relative to his salary it’s negligible (and I can prove that, because Ochocinco continues to celebrate despite said fines. If they were really hurting him, he’d stop. They could fine him $300k a celebration if they really wanted him to stop. They haven’t, and they won’t.)

Flozell Adams is known to be dirty and took a dirty shot at Justin Tuck. He received a steeper fine and there was talk before the fine was issued that he might be suspended. To me it’s relatively clear the league takes these issues more seriously than they take Ochocinco.

Titans Colts Fight

Any word on a fining for the attempted “eye gouge” on us this last Sunday?? And what about the douche bag aggin the crowd on as he walked into the lockerrooms before halftime? I mean, if your gonna fine Chad for puttin on a sombraro, then why not fine a dude for lessening the integrity of his organization???

Thanks, Cas the Ghost (:p)

I can accept that. I still can’t believe they were going to fine Lacey 8K for that slide.

I think his was 10 grand too, not 8 grand.

That is just a horrible nickname though. Awful, both in execution (Cas the Ghost?), and in design (very cliche).

When will the NFL realize that Jacob Lacey is a menace both to the the NFL and society in general?

That man must be stopped! Before he slides again! Won’t somebody think of the children!

Yes. The roughness fines (or lack thereof) are ridiculous.

If I were a player I would be really ticked off that people can trip, eye gouge, initiate helmet-to-helmet contact, take cheap shots, and give people the business and just get a slap on the wrist fine that they barely notice. If I’m a player, my career and livelihood, not to mention my health and well-being, are on the line. Isn’t this borderline criminal activity? I don’t understand why it’s different because it happens in a football game.

The celebration fines in themselves are stupid, but unlike the roughness fines, not necessarily wrong. If the NFL wants to be the No Fun League, well, that’s it’s prerogative. As stupid and hurtful as it is, if the NFL wants to fine Jacob Lacey $10K, it has the right to do it because he technically broke a rule. But when you set those fines next to the roughness fines, it adds insult to injury, so to speak, for the victims of the attacks. I don’t know how you can interpret it in any way other than to say the NFL doesn’t care about its players.

OchoCinco is what the league needs

Not because he’s a great player (he’s decent) and not because of his antics alone and trying to get fined. I’m sure he doesn’t like losing the money. But I think he’s trying to set an example that the NFL has become somewhat boring and he’s just trying to spice it up. I love that. The NFL is an ENTERTAINMENT business and for the fans.
These guys risk bodily injury week in and week out for 17+ weeks out of the year to entertain "The Fans", why not let them entertain the fans then with some side show antics after making a touchdown or a big play. Granted that it’s within a limit and doesn’t interfere with the game (much). I’ll be honest, I didn’t like 85 at first, but then I came to like him and think he’s a pretty funny guy. It’s all a show from him, he wants his fans to be entertained and laugh a little, that’s what I like about him and I see nothing wrong with that. With that said I do not know what his real personality is like outside of the NFL as I don’t pay much attention to that. But I find his cocky attitude and fun antics inside the NFL pretty humorous. The fines he has gotten are ridiculous. If he gets out of hand then fine, make a point to him to tone it down, but so far I’ve seen nothing from him that warrants the fines he’s gotten so far.

That sombrero and poncho fine was just stupid

Why a fine? Degrading the mexican culture? HA! I’m from Mexico and I really loved it. That sombrero and zarape were supposed to be gifts by a mexican fan who sent those to 85 a few months ago.
So, showing some gratittude to a fan is offensive? Heck no. Chad has been interested in Mexico quite a bit (why? who knows) so, that wasn’t offensive whatsoever.
If it was insportsmanlike conduct, well, it was on the sideline right? Jeez, it is true that NFL doesnt stand for National Football League anymore…

I believe the fine was

for something like being out of uniform. The NFL has strict guidelines on wgat you can wear and how to wear it.

Cas sorry to go off topic

But the Speaker of the house is allowed to speak. Not all the time i suppose but he has speaking priority over probably everyone in the house.

The rules are there for the integrity of the game. What if they let Ochos thing slide, then next week he comes with a sombero that has COCA COLA written on top. Its a blurry line, so they just take no tolerance whatsoever

Apparently, the Speaker of the House can speak, but has to remain impartial (can’t give his opinion).

if that is the case then I guess the fine just follows the rule book

but they are very strict about it. Coaches can’t wear suits if I’m correct. I don’t get that. Way too much.

permission from the NFL beforehand.

and that has to do with sponsorship

The company that provides the nfl gear didn’t produce suits. They have to wear official gear on the sideline. After Del Rio and Mike Nolan, they did produce a suit coaches could wear.

There I can understand the league being strict as that is a sponsorship/contract issue. But chad wearing a stupid costume from a fan for a couple of minutes and getting fined just seems a little excessive.

the permission for suit use

is limited to 2 games I believe. It was Del Rio and Nolan I believe.
It is still stupid

by BlueMark1821 on Dec 13, 2009 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

yes

But that refers to on the field. I am not sure how far that extends off the field and on the sidelines. You see players in street clothes if they have been injured, how is the sombero different if it is on the side lines? There are rules, but there is also discretion in how strictly you apply things.

Someone at the NFL has decided they need to keep chad in line, and someone justifies their job by bothering even to address such nonsense.

Would they fine Peyton if he wore a santa hat the weekend before christmas while he was standing on the sideline? I doubt it.

Think of it as a percentage of his paycheck

Chad HachiGo has a six-year, $35.5 million contract. A fine of $20k or $30k is pocket change. I have no problem with HuitCinq getting fined a new Honda Civic for every stunt and probably neither does he. It just helps him get more of the attention he craves.

Mike Smith… what? He didn’t punch anyone. Watch the video. Smith never even raises his hands above his shoulders. Even if he had, what could he have done? Dent Hall’s facemask? Smith was stupid for jawing and bumping with an opposing player and he got a $15,000 idiot tax. Again, no real problem.

Jacob Lacey’s fine was indeed moronic. It was also rescinded. No problem.

The one thing I agree on is that Flozell Adams should be run out of the NFL on a rail. His contract is even richer than AchtFünf – six years, $43 mil – so is really going to notice if one paycheck is $50k lighter? That dirty hit on Justin Tuck was obvious headhunting. His ass should have been ejected from the game right there, no questions asked.
