Franchise of the Decade
There has been a LOT of discussion around these parts lately about the media's lack of "respect" for our beloved Colts. Recently there has been a good deal of improvement in that arena both positive (Adam Schein's column), and not-so-positive (KSK's take on the "Fat Humps" from Indy). Even Chris Collinsworth and Peter King have given some love for the Colts. But let's be honest, the reason we as fans are upset with the media is not so much the lack of coverage of the Colts but what is said between the lines of that coverage.
The bottom line is this: the media has always viewed our team as the "yeah-buts", despite our enormous success and continued dominance and that has us up the wall. We were all lead to believe that if the Colts won a Super Bowl, the media would jump off their backs. So they did. And Peyton Manning was a great QB, and Tony Dungy was a great Head Coach, and the Colts were a great franchise. And then the Pats went 16-0 and our beloved Colts lost at home to the San Diego Chargers, and we were once again the "yeah-buts", as if our Super Bowl win meant nothing. Face it, the storyline has been set, and even a Super Bowl win this year and a fourth MVP for Peyton may not change it.
But before the sports analysts and talking heads begin all-too prematurely writing the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots off as the Model Franchise (I'm looking at you, Peter King), perhaps they should consider checking their facts.
Last night the Pittsburgh Steelers.... oh, excuse me, the DEFENDING WORLD CHAMP Pittsburgh Steelers, completely neutered themselves in Prime Time against the Cleveland Browns and destroyed all hope of making the playoffs. This morning the story is one of sadness and regret for the Steelers, but also way too much discussion of the weather, as if somehow the Steelers lost because they were playing outside in the cold. Think about that for a second.
This loss, coupled with the fact that the Patriots are 7-5 and in no way completely assured of winning their division or making the playoffs, got me thinking about the whole "Franchise of the Decade" debate. Now as much as I love discussing the Manning vs. Brady question until I'm blue (COLTS BLUE! wakka wakka) in the face, I love even more the Colts vs. Pats franchise debate. Or the Colts vs. Everyone franchise debate, to be more precise.
Granted, they've ONLY won one Super Bowl so far in the decade, but let's not let shiny things blind us to the truth: the Colts are the Best Franchise of the Decade. Period. Why? Because the two main teams trumpeted by the sports "gurus" as model franchises, the Steelers and Pats, have each missed the playoffs more than twice this decade (Steelers 4, Patriots 3). The Colts have missed the playoffs only once (2001). The Steelers and Pats have each missed the playoffs the year following a Super Bowl appearance twice (including this year for the Steelers), with only one of those years coming after a Super Bowl loss (Patriots, 2008). The Colts? They followed up their Super Bowl win with a 13-3 record and the #2 seed in the AFC, and that's after losing Dwight Freeney for half of the season.
Someone needs to explain to me how it is that a team like the Colts, a team that has set a record for most consecutive 12 win seasons, a team that has missed the playoffs only once this decade, a team that with a win on Sunday will have started 13-0 twice in one decade, a team that is one win away from having the MOST WINS IN ONE DECADE; how is it that they are glossed over when it comes to the Franchise of the Decade debate?
To many of us this seems unprecedented. How can it be that our success goes largely unmentioned while a team like the Patriots, a team that has missed the playoffs in 3 seasons this decade, twice after Super Bowl appearances, gets all the accolades just because they've won 2 more Super Bowls? How is this okay?
Well, let me ask you, when you think of the 1990's, who is your Team of the Decade? Is it the Cowboys, or 49ers?
If you said "Dallas Cowboys", then don't complain about the media's love for the Patriots.
In the 1990's, the Cowboys were to the 49ers as the Pats are to us. The 49ers had amazing regular season success, but continually lost to eventual champion Dallas in the playoffs. They also lost a couple of times to Green Bay (the equivalent of the Chargers to us), and won a Super Bowl in 1995 (a few years removed from their previous Super Bowl in the 1989-90 season). Sound familiar?
On Sunday, our Colts will look to break the record for most wins in a decade, set by the 49ers of the 1990s. They will also look to break the Patriots record of consecutive regular season wins, go 13-0 for the second time in the decade, and lock up homefield advantage in the playoffs. On Monday you probably won't hear much about it, and Peter King will probably still have the Saints as his #1 team, and the Patriots as the best Franchise of the Decade.
Don't worry about it, if the 49ers of the 90's are any indication, we're probably just on our way to another Super Bowl win.

The Colts are on the outside looking in. The perception, rightly or wrongly, is that they’ve choked too many times to inferior teams.
2000 – L WC Dolphins
2001 – DNMP
2002 – L WC Jets
2003 – L C Patriots
2004 – L D Patriots
2005 – L D Steelers
2006 – W SB
2007 – L D Chargers
2008 – L WC Chargers
2009 – ?
Now, worth noting that 3 of those 9 losses were to eventual Super Bowl champs. Still, that’s five losses to teams that the perception is we should have beaten.
Realistically, the Colts are in the same category as the Bucs, Ravens, and Giants. Our winning puts us at the top of that list, but a second Super Bowl win puts us in the discussion for the best team of the second half of the Naughties. The Pats own 2000-2004, but two Colts Super Bowls would put us ahead of the Steelers for 2005-2009.
Manning makes it Wayne on 'dem hoes!

I have no problem with this
So far as the discussion is about postseason success. In that case, the Pats are definitely number 1, no question. With the Steelers at #2. The problem I think we as Colts fans have is that this is all media folks want to focus on to determine success. That’s why I made the 49ers comparison. They were very similar to us with regards to regular season success and postseason failure. They also lost to the eventual Super Bowl champs 3 times and won one Super Bowl in the decade (seeing as the 89-90 season one counts as 89). The main difference may be what you alluded to in terms of strength of schedule. It just seems that they were in the discussion more alongside the Cowboys than we seem to be with regards to the Pats or even the Steelers.
Look at it this way
Would you give up some of our winning seasons if two other ones had ended in superbowls?
Patriots are the franchise of the decade. The goal of the regular season is to get you into the playoffs and do well there. We have done third best there, so we lose out.
Now, I’m still amazed and humbled by all we have achieved, but nothing beats winning a Super Bowl.
We're going to win on Sunday,
and we’re finally going to get a LOT of sweet media love. You’ll see.

You keep telling yourself that.
Even if the Colts won the next three super bowls, I get the feeling that the media would say, “well yeah, but……” and then give some stupid reason why the Pats (or Saints, or Chargers, etc) are better.
If it’s the love of the media that you seek, don’t be a Colts fan. I’m just saying.
Check it to Pancakes! Pancakes!
The Colts: We play more football in the fourth quarter than some teams play all year!
I think if we win the next two as well as this year, they will have to give us love
however, we might just end up as hated as the Pats are now.
Actually, we don’t have the evil hoodie, so we won’t. Whatever. In the words of Maebe Bluth “I have no idea what I’m saying”

I disagree Cass,
We’re playing a much tougher team. Atlanta doesn’t even have their starting QB. Our win will be more impressive. Then let the hype begin.

The major story if we win will be
“The Colts have clinched HFA. Now, they’ll start resting. They will lose because they are resting. They suck”
I’m sure of it.

But logic doesn't apply
with ESPN and the like.

Now that I agree with.
I like your random fact. LOL.

Sorry
You play sport to win titles, not regular season games. The Colts haven’t won (enough) titles.
If we get a second Super Bowl this season, yeah, we’re in the conversation. Otherwise…good enough ain’t good enough when you’re looking for a franchise defining team.
I think that the people focusing on titles don’t appreciate how nice it is to have a team that consistently wins. Sure, it is great to win championships, but any rational fan wouldn’t trade
10 seasons of excellence w/o a super bowl
for 2 super bowls, 8 “detroit” lions season.
Yes, I want the colt’s to win super bowls, but winning in the regular season is its own reward. It makes the city feel like a winner and it gives the fans a product worth their money.
We're not comparing teams with 2 superbowls and 8 "Detroit" like seasons.
Pats have 3 SBs and almost as wins as the Colts in this decade.
how can the pats be called team of the decade when 2009 isnt over and 2010 isnt even close
a decade i guess would be from 2000 january 1 to 2011 january 1, stupid pat loves
dammmmmmmmmmm its been almost a decade hopefully it starts slowing down

Decades run from
Jan 1 00 to Dec 31 09 (So 2000-2009). Milleniums and Centuries are from Jan 1 01 to Dec 31 00 (so 2001-2100 is one century).

You also have to discount the Pats titles to an extent
Because it has been proven that they cheated through at least the 2006 season. Which coincidentally, includes their whole Super Bowl winning run. So, I say grain of salt please.
The Colts are winners
The Colts have at least one title
The Colts are consistent
The Colts are very popular nationally(for a team with only recent success from a small market)
The Colts are financially successfully compared to other small market teams(except GB)
The Colts have high character people from top to bottom
The Colts never cheated to win titles
The Colts are lead by the greatest QB in history
The Colts don’t get love for three reasons I believe:
-We are from a small market, in a temperate climate
-Our players do what they are supposed to do, and therefore, are boring
-This is a team where there are some quality talents surrounding one individual that exumes talent, confidence, intelligence, and competitiveness. But he isn’t brash and cocky. He just takes the weight of the team on his back every season and just PERFORMS at a level not ever seen before. He then gives a press conference and goes home.
ESPN would give us a chance at being the “Franchise of the Decade” if the Colts were in LA, Reggie Wayne talked shit before every game, and Peyton was married to Marissa Miller. And Colts fans were douchebags as a group. But, we’re boring. The team brings their lunchbox, punches in, punches out and goes home. And we JUST WIN.
I think the ultimate sign of respect this team has gotten from the media is the fact that our wins don’t really matter. It’s expected for us to win. And we are hounded when we lose by any margin to any opponent EVER. Think about that. What other team can lose to a divisional opponent in a highly contested game and here about it for the next four years? Not many. The Colts – and by extension Peyton Manning – are so good, that losing is not an option.
I like to think that’s love.
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation
Pats
Anyone who thinks the Pats’ SBs aren’t tainted is probably a Patriot fan! Getting caught cheating red-handed throws every one of those SBs into question. Behaving that shamefully should practically disqualify the Pats from consideration. In addition, the Colts lack of SBs might be different had the Pats never cheated – Indy lost to them in the playoffs two of their prime years…
