Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Anthony Gonzalez, Whither Thou?

OK.  Someone fess up here.  We've all patiently waited for some *real* information on Gonzo.  We've had all the typical platitudes and coach-speak:

"No Idea" when he'll be back.

"Expect him to be back this season."  (Note: that doesn't mean this year.)

"Not expected for another week or so."

Gonzalez "might return mid-December."  (Hey, isn't December 11th pretty close to mid-December?)

Star-divide

You wanna know where he really is?  He's recovering in Thailand where he had his knee surgically repaired.  Health-care costs are so much less over there.

No wait - he's taken a leave of absence from the team so he can be in DC advising Obama on the whole healthcare thing, considering he's getting "really familiar with doctors and junk."

He was abducted by the Cuban secret police during an unscheduled visit he made to the island nation last month.  We've just not heard anything because the State Department doesn't want to create an international incident.

Actually, has anyone even seen him since he went down against the Jags?  Didn't think so.  That's because Gonzo passed away right after the game and Polian has him Cryogenically frozen in his office until science can bring him back to life.  No wait, bring him back to life AND fix his knee.

SERIOUSLY.  Can someone give us some real (and by real I mean more than "might"  "or so"  and  "no idea") update on the guy?  This is worse than the Patriots having Tom Brady on the injury report with "shoulder" ever since they drafted him.

(BTW - Makes me think of Igor in Young Frankenstein.  "Uh Tom, wasn't the injury to your right shoulder last week?"  Never mind.)

Real update: He's gone for the year

but he’s worth keeping a roster spot open for if he makes a great comeback. Guy hasn’t caught one football all year, without a couple weeks to get it going he’s just gonna Marvin us.

Mistake #1

Listening to what the Colts had to say about him.

"Brett Favre was a man who thought he was retired, but he knew it wouldn't last."

Yep.

Caldwell says nothing.

I saw Gonzo on the sidelines at the Titans game.

So Thailand is out. LOL

I hear ya

Here’s how I see it.

The Colts are way “Cold War” when it comes to injury reports. So, don’t listen to what they say, watch what they do.

They said (paraphrasing) gonzo is out 4 to 8 weeks.

What did they do: signed Basket – Gonzo has missed every game since week one.

Gonzo is probably gone for the season.

Said (paraphrasing): Brown is Hurt.

Do: Signed Heart.

Probably won’t see Brown for a while.

There u go

Defense is more important than breathing.

The Colts injury reports

are secretive to the point where we, the fans, have to guess the severity and return date based on past injuries to players or ourselves even.

With Gonzo, a knee injury like he had (just eerily collapsing after one step) made me want to be optimistic about a quick return, but my rational side immediately said “done for year.” I feel a little better saying that now that Garcon and Collie are doing what they are doing. Yet, I feel that he will be kept out for the season, but return for the playoffs. I know that is scarily similar to Marvin in ‘07, but the difference there is that we NEEDED Marvin as a #1/#2 guy. We do NOT need Gonzo to fill that role. I’m guessing that the Colts play it safe and don’t risk letting him get hurt in a meaningless regular season game, and instead, work him slowly back in time to play a role in round 1. He won’t need to be relied on for huge contributions, so I think he’ll play limited enough where he doesn’t risk too much, but plays enough to give us a boost.

With Brown, a chest injury isn’t catastrophic. I’m guessing that the Colts do not want to play him unless he is absolutely 100%. He’ll miss this week, and maybe even next week, but chest injuries usually don’t sideline people long. He needs to play at least in the Jets and Bills game, both of which he will likely get big minutes, in order to get him warmed up for the playoffs. If he doesn’t play in those games, then yeah, I doubt we’ll see much more of him. I doubt that will happen, though.

Adding one more bit.....

Hart and Simpson have showed they can be productive as #2 backs while Brown gets healthy, so there is no need to push him back before he is 100%. But like I said, I definitely would think it necessary to get him at least two games with extended PT to get him warmed up for the playoffs.

since he’s into these cutting edge methods of healing he should try the horse placenta treatment that the football (soccer) players in europe have been using.

I still question whether that

actually does anything.

Can't see him coming back

I am afraid the next time we will see AG playing will be next season. It is hard to rush him back with the way Garcon and Collie have been playing.

by davis3217 on Dec 12, 2009 9:29 AM EST reply actions

We won't see him again

for the regular season, IMO. In the regular season, we do not need him because a) the way Garcon and Collie are playing and b) pushing him back and risking re-injury in a game that means nothing is pretty stupid.

The Colts want him back, he wants to be back, and is training like he will be back. I’m guessing he is being rehabilitated for a playoff run, where we definitely could use/need him. It may just be in a limited role, as I don’t think he would all of the sudden take Garcon or Collie’s reps, but giving us another weapon in a limited role is going to give us a huge boost. So unless you see an IR soon, I say go ahead and assume he is being prepped for the playoffs.

problem is

If he returns to the playoffs and turns out just like Marv did in 07, I’d prefer him to save him until next season.

True story. He’s OK though, just needs a little more time to recover.
