The Cardinals are on fire right now. Boldin is healthy, Warner seems healthy, the line is blocking, and Beanie Wells is actually contributing a little. Wouldn’t shock me to see them make a postseason run. If the Chargers are the “hot” team in the AFC right now, the Cards are definitely the NFC counterparts.

Former NFL head coach, and long-time broadcaster John Madden, was found dead this morning in his Pleasanton, California home. His body was discovered by his wife Virginia, in the garage of the couple’s custom estate.
At this time, police are giving few details other than to say it does not look like foul play was involved. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and Zanamivir (Relenza) inhibit the viral neuraminidase. The newly released virus reattaches to molecules on the surface of the host and would fail to be released unless the neuraminidase (N) removed the N-acetylneuraminic acid from the cell surface molecules. By doing this it enables the virus to totally escape from the host cell. Tamiflu and Relenza were computer designed to fit into the binding site of this enzyme.

I just think it's cool that they identified the structure of a enzyme key to a flu virus' life cycle, but not used by human cells
and designed a molecule to lock in with that enzyme preventing it working effectively.

But still, the point is how to interrupt the viral replication cycle. RTIs suck as a treatment, since they can screw with stuff like telomerase. But, it’s a Hobson’s choice: Take the treatment and be ill as all getout, or die.
Anyway, surface chemistry research is fascinating. Part of me gets tempted once in a while to go back to college and look at pursuing an advanced degree just to reaquaint myself with that stuff. But I don’t think I have the discipline to go back for a masters, not to mention the difficulty of getting in the study groove again. Plus, advanced degree in the bio/chem sciences? I don’t remember the krebs cycle anymore; I’d be so far behind, I’d essentially be starting over.
But still, sometimes it feels like it’d be a good idea…

I once had a biochem professor who specialized in surface protein reactions. I didn’t understand a damn thing about what she researched (and still don’t), but it looked fascinating.
There was some research back when I was in college (late 80’s, early 90s… * sob *!) attempting to tackle AIDS through interrupting the surface binding to T-cells, but I never read up on where those lines of inquiry went.
