Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hello Colts Fans

The Colts travel to Jacksonville Thursday in what should be another fun game between division rivals. Any questions you have can be addressed here. I'll just post some "ahem" canned FAQ responses if you don't mind

1. Tim Tebow

2. The LA/London Jags?

We aren't going to California, sorry. We did sell out this Thursday's game and season ticket sales for 2010 are back on the upswing. As for London, I fully expect the Jags to be the home team for next year's London game, see why here.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Finals suck.

by Cassieper on Dec 16, 2009 12:22 AM EST reply actions

A lot has changed

The pass rush got plenty worse after losing our best DE in that first game. Just recently our top picks last year(DE’s: Harvey & Groves) got around to pass rushing.
The offensive tackles have improved greatly since week one.
On the other hand, the interior of the OL is now starting to get old and wearing out.
The LB’s are playing better in coverage. I doubt stretch plays will get much anymore since the tackling in general has improved greatly since our second game against the Titans.
Garrard has been up and down and hard to pinpoint, but he’s played better on the whole since week one. Partially because Mathis and Freeney weren’t trying to kill him on every play.
Our receiving position has greatly improved, but has suffered a few setbacks due to injury.
MJD is not playing as well as of late, partially because the interior of the OL is taking a step back and maybe also because of injury.
Special teams has gotten better even with your old coach Russ Purnell, but we just cut our best return man in Brian Witherspoon(Due to injuries to other players that need replacing). The drop off there is relatively low though.
Greg Jones our starting FB will be out for this game and will be sorely sorely missed. Our power running game will really suffer without him.
All of our TE’s have improved and have become match nightmares for opposing defenses. I expect them to be a crucial part of the offensive game plan.
The secondary is playing well, but if Mathis is out or limited our defense suffers against the deepish passing game.

Does Rashean Mathis have incriminating photos of an official?

Does he sleep with Mike Periera?

Will he be allowed to have sex with our receivers while they are saying ‘no thanks, im straight’?

Thanks for your time.

OOOO

that was one call. Give it a rest. Trust me you guys do enough pick-plays to make up for that. How about the late hits that Garrard always takes that are ever called? hum….

by Ewdtrey on Dec 16, 2009 12:50 AM EST up reply actions

actually

it was multiple times. Mathis sucks a corner, the only entertaining aspect is the 14 jaguars fans huddling together whining about how he’s not in the probowl, All-pro team, and in canton every year. Those tears are sustaining.

Also, I enjoy the, ‘lol, well, rashean mathis might be trying to knock up your receivers, but garrad got hit late’. I think Cass could tell you what kind of argument that is.

"knock up"

I’m not sure that’s the expression you were looking for, unless you were trying to insinuate that your receivers are pussies that can be knocked up….. Sorry if I’m offending someone. Just couldn’t resist. Besides you weren’t very cordial with your responses, so that added as incentive.
Lets put it this way, assuming you are calling out the refs, which you are; who do you think they would favor in a match such as ours: the team that is 13-0 and making a story out of a possible perfect season or the “lowly” Jags? Lets just be honest with ourselves.
Either way if it’s something we are getting away with and you aren’t, that probably just means your team isn’t taking advantage of how the refs are calling the game or they aren’t going about it the right way.

Perhaps s/he was, but I will agree that a Colt fan cast the first stone here.

Because the Mathis question was not “clean, intelligent” only vaguely on the topic of football. It was meant to be inciting. bwfull was valid in pointing that out. It doesn’t matter if they quoted the wrong person, the point is still valid. The mocking or the negative comments about their player doesn’t help us learn anything about their team.

At least that is how I feel.

A lot of things are true, but they don't necessarily belong in this conversation.

Was SpazMo really trying to better know the Jacksonville Jaguars?

As I said earlier, there is no irony or ha ha here. bwfull‘s small, insignficant mistake of crediting shake with BBS’s post is not the same as SpazMo asking questions that weren’t “clean” and obviously going to insult the guest commenters. bwfull’s point was completely valid and thus, I see no “irony” or FAIL in it.

shrug It’s not a big deal really and we should probably all just move on as none of this is furthering any discussion about the upcoming game.

I hear it’s going to rain in Jacksonville tomorrow. Who does that help?

by diagenesis on Dec 16, 2009 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

the Jags, I would guess

since a lot of our game revolves around speed and a lot of their game doesnt. They dont have a pass rush to slow down, they don’t have a deep threat to slow down (If Mike Sims-Walker is their deep threat, he’s already hurt, so that will probably slow him more than the weather).

If the Colts stick to running the ball and running it up the middle, then it shouldn’t matter. Is it going to be a downpour, or just a sprinkle?

by SpazMo on Dec 16, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

You would think the

rain would help the Jags, but they’ve been slipping and sliding everywhere and opposing teams haven’t been nearly as much. I’m not sure why. Maybe they’ve just found the worst spots on the field.
But if the rain is bad enough that both teams struggle passing, I think our team is more prepared to win on the back of our running game and run defense.
However I doubt either QB, with their strong arms, will suffer much with their passes; and I think Manning actually has more of a grip problem than Garrard despite their differences in fumbles. Regardless, I don’t think either will have a problem. But we also have a very young receiving group outside of Holt(Together as a group, the rest had 16 total catches coming into the season), so they might struggle trying to catch a ball in the rain especially the ones with weaker/smaller hands.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 16, 2009 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

a grip problem? What makes you say that? I honestly have never heard anybody say that about Peyton before.

by Cassieper on Dec 16, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Not saying he has a grip problem

just if I had to rank them I’d have to say his hands don’t hold on to the ball as strongly. In three or four games this season I’ve seen him just lose a handle on the ball once or twice during the game when trying to make a pass. Nothing to write home about, but I haven’t seen Garrard do that since we played in Chicago last year in weather reaching the teens. Even then it only happened once. Just watch Garrard throw the ball. Unless he’s under unfavorable circumstances, like being hit hard by someone he throws a nice spiral. He’s also got a good pump fake that he’s been using a lot this season.

A few things

1) Im an ass.

2) Im intelligent

3) The question was very sincere and important to me: I’ve never seen someone get away with DPI so much before in my life, I’m curious about the secret of his success.

4) It is not only completely related to football, but to the game tomorrow, as I think Mathis was waiting for this game to come back, and we’ll get to see him in action tomorrow in 48% of all american households.

5) I do not like the Jaguars or their 15 fans. They are, in my opinion, no better than college fans, but they and their team have a sense of entitlement. They have done nothing and earned nothing, but they are going to lose a football team because they havent won the super bowl in 16 years of existence or gotten the national attention they feel they deserve.

All that said, I won’t come back to the thread anymore. I hope we all learn lots about the Jags, while they are still in Jacksonville.

Can you give me some background on your wideouts? Other than Torry Holt, I only know Matt Jones, the guy who was awesome in madden when he was drafted, but not so much in real life.

You are lucky to have Torry Holt. I think he is the second/third best receiver of the 00’s (moss, harrison, Holt) and is a complete class act.

by sandsnake on Dec 16, 2009 1:00 AM EST reply actions

Well

Matt Jones is not even playing in the league anymore.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 16, 2009 2:02 AM EST up reply actions

That wasn't meant to be

such a short response. I just got busy doing other things. Sorry
Holt is actually the 3rd best receiver when the receivers not on IR are healthy. Mike Sims-Walker is a pretty darn good player, but he’s just going through an injury battle these last few weeks. If I could compare him to some players, I would say he is a cross between Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne. His strength and size are between the 2. His hands aren’t as great as Wayne’s and maybe even not Andre’s. In either case he hasn’t dropped a lot of passes. He runs great routes and he’s faster than Wayne, and slightly slower than Andre. For those of you who don’t know, he played with Brandon Marshall in college and was the better of the 2 if that puts things in perspective.(6’2" 215 4.35-40)
Our 4th round pick Mike Thomas is kinda like a poor man’s Steve Smith or Percy Harvin. Almost built like a RB and plays like one with the ball in his hands. He’s actually faster than either of the aforementioned, and he has great leaping ability and just as good a hands. He runs good routes and can catch in traffic very well, but he is still learning the position; otherwise I think he would be a starter. He’s also our new return man.(5’8" 195 4.29 40)
Our 4th receiver is a UDFA named Nate Hughes, a former track star. He’s got plenty of speed and reminds me of a poor man’s Benard Berrian. His main weakness, other than youth, seems to be his hands when being contested for the ball.
We may have a 5th receiver active one Thursday I’m not sure, but he was a 7th rounder in Tiquan Underwood from Kenny Britt’s college, Rutgers. He’s got height and speed, but he’s a another rookie that’s still learning how to play and being that he’s so thin he needs to learn how to get off a jam a little better. Early in training camp he had trouble catching a much faster pro ball from Garrard.
Unfortunately, Mike Sims-Walker and Mike Thomas are banged up and Holt is older, slower, and his hands aren’t exactly what they used to be. Holt is a very very smart guy, and runs some of the best routes in the league. He is very professional.
Watch out for our TE’s though. Marcedes Lewis is a 6’7" 275lbs deep threat that can block really well. And our 6th rd pick TE Zach Miller is a former college QB that is still learning the ropes as a blocker and receiver, but he’s got more upside than pretty much any TE in the league. He’s big, strong, and super fast. Everyone wants to compare him to Dallas Clark, partially because we are in the same division; but really there isn’t anyone built like him. Here’s a few vids of him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCus2P1zHiw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mptxOS_91Vc
In short, Zach Miller IS what Matt Jones was supposed to be.

It seems nice that you have broken the streak of terrible receiver draft picks: I remember R.J. Soward, Reggie Wiilliams (is he out of the league, too?), Matt Jones, all being huge failures. Its not a unique problem to your organization, it is depressing how often top wide receivers tend to fail. See David Terrell, Peter Warrick, Darius Heymcbutterfingers…

I'd say

it depends on who ends up playing on Thursday for your team, and how MSW is listed for the game on the injury report. If he’s doubtful or even maybe questionable I would stay away from him.
Mike Thomas is a good player, but he’s also coming off a injury, and he’s not a Garrard favorite in the endzone.

I’m just curious whether he sucks, is progressing slowly but surely, or if MJD is just a ball hog, not that being a ball hog is a bad thing in his case.

Not sure,

I like Rashad Jennings, i like how we transfered to Liberty from Pittsburgh to be with his father. He’s a hard hitting RB who has had some nice runs. He’s on a good investment for a 7th rounder. But i guess we must invest our hope in MJD, and keep MJD in the game at all times.

I actually didn't like

the Rashad Jennings pick a whole lot, because I thought there was better available, and because I didn’t think he fit well with MJD. But he’s been progressing and getting better at everything he does, especially his blocking which is crucial to see the field on this team; it’s to the point that I think they are anal about it. If you get a chance, watch how well MJD blocks. Sometimes I wonder if he could play some guard in a pinch. Laugh as you may, but I’ve seen him knock a few DT’s flat on their back.
In reality however, MJD is just a better back; and because he’s not being overworked on a per game basis there isn’t a large need to rotate him out all that often.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 16, 2009 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Isn't MJD the one

that knocked Merriman back 5 yards?

by Naptime! on Dec 16, 2009 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yes it was

but he does that kind of stuff regularly. And he doesn’t just do it at the line of scrimmage. He does it all over the field. No matter where the ball is thrown to, he will chase it down and try to block for whoever catches it. He’s also probably our leading tackler after a turn over. In college it was said that the biggest hits were made by the defense technically, but it was really MJD in practice after a turnover that hit the hardest. He was highly recruited to be a safety. He is the epitome of what a football player is.
Just watch him through a whole game regardless of where the ball goes. It’s really impressive how much more he does when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands.

He’s actually tied with Julius Williams for tackles with 5.

Haha

I didn’t know that stat, but I speculated as much.

He;s been getting more carries as of late, and he is starting to come on.

Where's the arrow pointing with Reggie Nelson?

I’ve heard rumblings that he’s become a complete liability in coverage.

by Aerostar193 on Dec 16, 2009 11:39 AM EST reply actions

Those would be correct.

There’s a reason I’ve been hyping GT S Morgan Burnett. Nelson just seems lost out there more times than not.

Morgan Burnett is like our Donovin Darius

Nelson if he

can avoid being cut/traded etc has his arrow pointing up because he is improving, but he has some ground to make up. If we had a semblance of a pass rush I think a lot of his flaws wouldn’t be so dramatic. Not a great player in other words, but he can be salvaged. He’s also been playing some nickle, where he’s been more than adequate.

Have you watched any Colts games this year? Do you think we'll do a better job with MJD

this time around? I feel as if we’ve gotten a lot better against the run, but he’s the one that has always given us trouble.

by diagenesis on Dec 16, 2009 11:43 AM EST reply actions

Haven't seen much of Indy outside of the highlight shows

The main thing I’ll be watching for is how LT Eugene Monroe does against Dwight Freeney. Freeney took Monroe to the woodshed in Week 1 and it will be a good measuring stick to see how Monroe has progressed.

I actually think

your run D actually did pretty good in week one, but MJD is just unstoppable at times; especially in the open field. But your defense I thought did a number on our OL when trying to stop the run. As for how well you guys will fair against MJD I think is a matter of how well the OL does and if MJD is fully healthy, because otherwise we should be able to run on nearly anyone in the league.
I do think your run D is highly underrated, especially in goal line situations; partially because you guys sell out and I don’t think the rest of the league has realized how much you guys have improved in that aspect because they rarely take advantage of you guys selling out.

Thanks for noticing.

We’ve now gotten used to goal-line and 4th down stands. It’s a a nice feeling when a goal-line/4th down stand isn’t cause for a parade anymore. It’s now just a mild celebration for me on par with scoring a TD.

Rookie Tackles

How are the two rookie tackles playing and are you happy the Jags selected them? Also how do you feel about the two DE drafted in last years draft?

by Sanders_fan89 on Dec 16, 2009 1:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions

The tackles (Monroe and Eben Britton) have been playing very well as of late after some expected rookie growing pains

However, just as they came on, the interior of the offensive line has collapsed. Pillars Brad Meester and Vince Maunwai have been mediocre at best the last few weeks, which is very troubling.

Derrick Harvey is starting to come on, and was even voted a defensive captain the last two weeks, so his arrow is pointing up. Quentin Groves is playing better as well.

How well

do the Jaguars cover the deep ball?

The deep ball

has been protected a little better as of late, in comparison to past years. Still not great, but we are playing smarter back there and more cover-2/preventative type defenses. I imagine even with everything that we will try to do to take away Clark wont matter, because our defense has been horrible at best against the short passing game.

I have no strong feeling of any player of the NFL

Except maybe Philip Rivers…He is a jerk. I liked San Diego when Brees played there. But since that big mouth trash talker is the man in charge I hate them.

I respect him as a QB; but as a person he is awful!

I've family that lives in San Diego and they insist he's a great guy

especially around the community. I still just can’t seem to believe them.

But agreed that he’s a great QB and I wouldn’t throw him off a cliff. He has like six kids. I wouldn’t mind putting fire ants in his uniform before they play the Colts…

by diagenesis on Dec 16, 2009 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

I can imagine

he is a good guy off the field. But I saw a jerk on the field.

I know some Broncos fans(who are otherwise good guys); that always rooting for a sack or tackle that sidelined the guy FOREVER in every Chargers game…

Philip Rivers has acted like an ass clown in the past

But strictly judging his play, he’s been playing QB just as good as anyone in the league this year. I realize I’m posting this in a 13-0 Colts site where Manning is hero, but he should be a legit candidate for MVP with Brees and Manning. Tomlinson’s glory days are over and Rivers is literally carrying that team to the postseason.

Chris Johnson

Not that he’s a bad guy, he’s just too damn fast. I hate watching our defense try to keep up twice a year.

by Adam Stites on Dec 17, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

I hate

Hines Ward. Just a dirty player. I would like to hit him if I was defense. I think Cutler is a little B^&*$, but I don’t hate him. I think Tom Brady gets more credit than he deserves, which kind of gets at me from time to time.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 17, 2009 4:16 AM EST reply actions

I'm no Ward fan either

I really didn’t like Rodney Harrison when he was in the league for the same reasons.

I know this doesn't involve either team

but Chris Henry has passed away this morning at 6:30. My prayers go out to his family, and especially his 3 little kids. I really hope that during this holiday season they may find some kind of peace in the midst of this tragic storm
