Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Quick post just for Opinion's sake. It's a quickly made 5 minute post, so bear with me.

Does Austin Collie have a shot at Rookie of the Year?

50 Receptions/540 Yards. 30 First Downs 6 Touch Downs.

A few other candidates (that i can think of off the top of my head, there may be more) are :

Matt Stafford: (in 10 games) 201/377 53.3 Yards. 2267 Yards 13 TD's 20 INT. (he is a lion, give him a break)

Percy Harvin : 48 receptions/681 Yards 6 touchdowns. 37 first downs. Also 34 Kickoff returns for 986 Yards and 2 TD's.

There are several others but im in a bit of a hurry-Sorry.

Post away, and let me know what you guys think. Stat wise Collie is a poor man's harvin, so i guess its a long shot. But remember the situation of Collie's success. He plays his best when out offense sputters, and the nnobody else (garcon, Wayne, Clark) can seem to catch a ball.

Harvin wins it easily this year

Collie’s been pretty good, but Harvin’s got the bigger name recognition, he seems to be more athletic than Collie, has better receiving stats, and he returns kickoffs very well.

Kick returns

He’ll get it for the kick returns. His receiving stats are not better. Collie has more catches and has fewer drops (I think). TDs they are tied (6). Harvin has more yards.

Collie has been good, but Harvin has been better

I would take 48 catches and 681 yards over 50 catches and 540 yards any day of the week.

More yards per catch.

I'm writing a post on this

Newsday wrote an article saying Hakeem Nicks was the best rookie WR in the NFL. They forgot to include Collie in the list of best rookie WRs even though Collie’s stats, and his team’s current accomplishments, DESTROY Nicks’.

Let me help you out with your lede, BBS

“Assholes get it wrong again, fail to notice Indiana on their map of America’s 49 states.”

too abrasive?

maybe this:

“Austin Collie’s satan-worshipping, zoophiliac ways disqualify him from OROY consideration. Nicks and Harvin celebrate by sending him a really sexy goat and some pentagrams.”

or maybe this:

“Media douchebags masturbate onto keyboards, vote Nicks OROY.”

Just trying to help. I assume Harvin has it sewn up, but to not even mention Collie truly bites.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

Seriously? Duh.

I can understand someone writing an article favoring someone else, but how the hell do you not even mention him?

I’d still say Harvin, just because he’s more of a matchup problem/ home run threat, but that’s no disrespect to Collie. Being completely ignored, though, certainly is.

Of the Colts rookies, I’d say that Powers might be the most deserving of an award, though there are plenty of other rookie defenders doing well, and that Bird (Byrd?) in Buffalo will get all the CB recognition because of his INTs.

by willyduer on Dec 16, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

Is it me or are there more stellar D rookies each year than on O?

I could name a handful of big impact rookies on D—guys like Cushing and Byrd have big numbers, guys like Powers were surprises, stepping and helping a top-2 scoring D go undefeated without huge stats.

The rookie RBs, in particular, are not setting the world on fire. WRs too, I guess. There’s usually one hitting 800+ yards, no? And the QBs…. meh.

Collie is in a decent position to add some stats if Reggie sits a few extra quarters.

by Bobman on Dec 17, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's easier to make an impact as a rook on D

“See that dude? Tackle him!”

Whereas an offensive player has a playbook to learn, and wide receivers have it even tougher because they need to learn to run NFL routes, beat NFL corners and catch the ball from NFL quarterbacks. Plus, if a defensive guy blows an assignment or misses a tackle nobody really notices, but if you lose a fumble or drop a pass, you get called out in the media.

Just one of those things.

by eltharion_doa on Dec 18, 2009 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

Hadn't thought of the redundancy issue

i.e. if a “great” LB misses a tackle, the safety covers up for his mistake. If a WR misses a pass, there’s nobody else out there to make up for him. So flaws in a D player’s game are less visible. (unless he’s a CB/safety who is the last line of defense…)

Though to be fair to their intellectual challenges, top D players would need to study a lot of film to maximize their effectiveness. If it was as simple as see-and-tackle, no D would ever have depth issues. Somebody gets hurt, plug in a new body who can see and tackle.

Not sure I'd give it to any rookie reciever.

Moreno has been quite productive, Oher has been stout, hell, even Crabtree has managed to put up some pretty good numbers. I guess Sanchise is out of contention now.

by slash196 on Dec 16, 2009 8:48 PM EST reply actions

Oher...

Now there’s an idea. Did Joe Thomas win it a few years ago? If not, Oher has no chance. Plus, he has a movie and a book and, really, it might be considered a little too much for voters.

Sanchize! The only thing I want out of him is a start and hopefully a full game next week. Our INT totals are too low for a top D and he’s got the cure. Clemens is a nice conso prize, too, however.

collie still has 3 games

This kid is gonna be real good! I cant wait for next season.

Wayne and Clark get alot of attention. Garcon is no slouch and likes to go deep, he definitely is being shadowed by at least 1 safety. Who’s open?

Collie!

I bet this kid gets 700 yards for the year and a few more scores and best of all, a few more 3rd down conversions! I love watching him put the head down and pick up the last 3 yards the hard way.

Harvin is deserving and should also finish strong, great punt returns!. I think Nicks and Moreno are also very deserving. You even have to mention that linebacker at Houston, Cushing. He is damn good and deserves his due too! I cant think of any other good defensive rookies. Wish we could have Harvin on our special teams staff, I’d cut Vinateri and Simpson for a good kick/punt returner like Harvin.

If I had to pick rookies of the year, I’d go Harvin 1st, Moreno second. On offense.

Cushing on defense.

He's improving with each game, and can stay in bounds and take a hit and gets some good YAC's. Look for this rookie to finish strong.

Tight Race

I think ROY comes down to Harvin vs. Collie. Maybe Moreno sneaks in to contention with a strong last 3 games, but I doubt it.

The nod, as mentioned in the previous post probably goes to Harvin because of his work returning kickoffs. Either way, both of these players are going to have great NFL careers.

Speaking of rookies, what a great rookie class the Colts had in 2009. Collie, Brown, Powers, Lacey, Mcafee..

I think that Harvin will need to fall off in a major way for Collie to have a shot. He’ll need a pair of monster games, and Harvin to have a few weeks of invisibility.

Still though, I’m not sure that you can legitimately give it to someone else.

Harvin falling off

could happen, unfortunately due to his migraines… kept him out of practice and at least 1 game IIRC

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Dec 18, 2009 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

Yup, last week's practices and game, plus no practices so far ths week, either

Collie added a nice TD last night but not a lot of catches or yardage. The thing that kills me is he’s the 4th option! A) he has superior vets taking the brunt of the coverage, but B) his numbers are crazy high because Manning’s are.

Garcon needs 235 yards in his last two to hit 1,000—a stretch. Collie needs al LEAST 150 and 2-3 TDs to be a serious contender. His catch numbers are good and he got some national exposure mentioning this very topic last night, which is nice. That’s a lot of production for our #3&4 options.

But seriously, Collie has a lot of TDs—if he hits 700 yards and 10 TDs, how can they NOT very seriously consider him? Reggie’s TD totals were 0 his rookie year (27 catches) and 4 his soph year (49 catches). Collie’s production stands up very nicely.

Rookie of the Year

In response to the previous post:

The migraine headaches of Percy Harvin have hurt his stats, fantasy value, and ROY potential this year. I do not believe that Austin Collie has a chance to win ROY only because he is a major player in the passing game, but not me main cog; Wayne and Clark are. You look at guys like Harvin, Hakeem Nicks, Jeremy Maclin, and even Mike Wallace and it is difficult to put any WR, now with Harvin down, as the ROY. What I do believe is that the predicted winner at the beginning of the year, Knowshon Moreno, will pull it out. He should be a 1,000+ yard rusher and has favorable matchups to close out the year (KC, Oak, Phil). Correll Buckhalter is down and Moreno has the potential for a 10 TD, 1,000+ yard, 30 receptions season. If the Broncos make the playoffs, he should be the solid leader for ROY. Moreno does need a couple of 100 yard games to solidify his win and he could easily do that against KC and Oakland. If Harvin comes back and makes a major statement going into the playoffs, I believe he has a chance. I will be very disappointed if Sanchez or Stafford win only because they have not played the full 16 games and they are not having a Matt Ryan or even Joe Flacco-esque season like last year.

Bar none, the Defensive ROY will most likely be Brian Cushing, but I believe that a ROY should be a player that helps his team make the playoffs and the Texans are not going. However, Clay Matthews is making a huge statement in the Packer’s 3-4 and is having a Pro Bowl-like season, especially in the season’s second half, and should be the undisputed winner. Jairus Byrd is also a stud, but the Bills aren’t doing much and unless Byrd pulls off another 2 INTs in three games in a row again, I don’t see it going to anyone but Cushing.

I am a die-hard Colt’s fan, I believe Addai, Wayne, Manning, Clark, Mathis, and Freeney are all deserving of the Pro Bowl. I believe Manning, Wayne, and Clark should be First-Team All Pro, and Manning should win ROY. I wish that Donald Brown had a stellar season and won ROY or even Collie for that manner. But the critics are bias against the Colts because everyone believes that Manning makes everyone better around him. That may be true, but isn’t that the case of all great QBs. It is not easy to achieve at a high level in the NFL no matter who your QB or coach is. It may help, but it takes a great player to take advantage of that relationship and the Colts are solid.

Please keep watching for my post on all the doubters. Since the beginning of the season I have listened to just about everyone on every sport’s news station find some point in the season where the Colts are going to lose and they have proven them wrong. From Mike Greenberg on Mike & Mike claiming losses during the Ravens, Pats, Broncos stretch (we won them all) to Deion “Prime Time” Sanders giving the Colts their first loss last night to the Jags, and the list goes on…when will the critics be silenced?

Rookie of the Year

Bobman,

My bad, I didn’t mean at the beginning of my post, “Response to the previous post:” I meant “Response to the previous posts.” It was not a direct comment on your points. You are very right, if he hits 700 and 10TDs, Collie should be considered.
