Blitzing

Just an observation/opinion I made during tonight's game. So I'm aware that Coyer's "Tampa 2 with wrinkles" uses much more blitzing than the Colts have before, but did anyone else think they kind of overused it tonight? I'm all for playing more aggressive defense and blitzing more than before, but colts linebackers aren't exactly the ideal pass rushing backers. I feel like using blitzes in moderation is a good way to make the opposing offense unsteady, but they don't have the correct personnel to become a full time blitz oriented defense. In addition, they have two amazing ends that can create pressure with only a four man rush. I realize they were both limited tonight, but it seemed a lot of the big passes by the Jags were on blitzes, leaving their receivers alone against guys like Tim Jennings.

But what the hell am I complaining for, they won.

The blitzes were great

they got the Jags down the field faster. It was that, or go to cover 2 the whole night and have 10 minute drives. :)

This is life without Mathis and Freeney. No one on that line has to be doubled, so you just max protect, the blitz rarely gets close, and you hit one of your players in one-on-one situations. Conversely the blitzes work better when they are in, because 2 people still have to account for DFree or you get death.

Never doubt Peyton Manning, he’ll make you look silly
Joseph Addai is a good running back.
Im a douchebag, an asshole, and I'm rarely right.

^yup

Coyer has stated that he blitzed so much when he DCed in Denver because he couldn’t get pressure any other way. So he reverted a little to old form tonight with 93/98 on the sidelines. I am not a huge fan of it myself, and our DE stars proved their worth with their 4th Q appearance that saw the Jags punt for the first times in the game.

The “empty zone” TD really concerned me with 8 on the LOS (and all rushing) and just three back to cover. Like pee-wee football, where nobody passes. Oops. TD.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

Agreed...

The blitzes were a factor of Mathis and Freeney not playing all night. I think there where a few too many blitzes, but I think it was to fill every gap to keep MJD in check for the second half. It did lead to a little too much one on one coverage for me, but I think they showed they can change style when the opposing team dictates it. That is something we never saw with Meeks. I feel that last nights game was a win BECAUSE we changed our style. We would have lost that game last year.

If Freeney and Mathis were healthy, we wouldn't of seen it as much

the only one that bothered me was the 3rd and goal from the 13 in the 3rd quarter.

That one just looked... stupid

I assumed, and maybe everyone else on the planet did too, that a few of those guys up on the line in that 8-3 alignment were going to drop back in coverage.

oops.

I mean in this case, the back of the EZ is your friend—there is NO deep field (Kordell Stewart in the 1995 AFCCG excluded). The QB can only make a short pass, so he’s likely to get rid of it fast (as opposed to looking for a 30 yarder that takes more time to develop). So the blitz does not make a ton of sense to start with. Defenders only have 23 yards of field depth to cover. So of course we send 8. God!

Here's the thing...

Everyone hates on Tim Jennings so much, and a lot of the times, rightfully so. However, the guy is always healthy and when he isn’t forced to play in that soft zone, he really isn’t all that bad. I believe that Polian even mentioned that this is what the defense calls for and that is what Tim Jennings is required to do…I know he gets thrown at a lot, but I really think he does a good job tackling after the catch, and in all honesty, the guy breaks on the ball so well when he is allowed to press up on the receiver in man coverage and in situations were it is third and a short passing situation (3rd & 4 or so). I think he gets killed in the long 2nd down and 3rd down situations because he is asked to play off his receiver and give up such a big cushion. The fact of the matter is, he isn’t giving up that cushion because he wants to, this is what is asked of him, and even though he gives up several plays, he tends to have a knack for making a play as well which is always overlooked. Enough with the Jennings hating…At least he gives us 16 games in the secondary which is a lot more than we are used too with the Colts! As long as Polian and Caldwell believe in this guy, then so do I. I will never question or doubt Polian’s decision making.

I don't know anything about too many blitzes.

But I do think, having Freeney and Mathis playing sparingly might have had something to do with it.

And, this is a bit off topic

and it shouldn’t surprise anyone, but dumbshit Skip Bayless of ESPN continues to badmouth the Colts. He said that the Jags lost it, instead of the Colts winning it. He continues to be wrong every single week and yet that stupid network keeps him on. And, meanwhile, the Colts continue to do what they do,……win.

I hate to partially agree with Bayless. It seemed to me that at least the last drive was one laden with mistakes by the Jags O instead of great plays by the Colts D.

Yeah, but

When do we ever win it? Every game has mistakes by both teams. Guys like Bayless never see the Colts winning a game. They seem to only see 14 games where the other team lost it.

Before the Jags failed to make a game winning drive in the fourth, the Colts had to do so. And we did. That was a great play to Wayne for the long six. The Colts WON the game for the 14th time this season.

Every time a team win the other team looses. What Im saying is that in that last drive it looked to my untrained eye like the Colts D was performing in a manner consistent with their performance for the rest of the game while the Jags O underperformed compared to the rest of the game in that last drive. I therefore do not agree with the premise that the Colts D completely turned their game around in the fourth quarter.

I do agree that the lapse in defensive performance against the Jags is nothing to worry about as long as we get a healthy team for the playoffs. Too many factors conspired to make the defensive performance underwhelming.

The Colts might be the first 16-0 team

that actually “won” about 8 games. At least according to many media people.

I didn't like the blitz called on 3rd and goal from the 13

but other than that it didn’t bother me. Have to get pressure somehow with Freeney and Mathis limited.

Don’t forget about Eric Foster last night, folks. We don’t typically get much of a pass rush from our DT’s, but Foster was a monster all night. Who’s to say that the blitz didn’t open that aspect up?
