The Time is Now for Anthony Gonzalez

If Gonzo wants any chance to make an impact in the playofffs, he must participate in these final two games. As a wide receiver in the style of offense the Colts run, it is imperative to establish timing and rhythm with Peyton. We all have seen what happens when you dont establish that when Harrison went down. This appears to be an even worse case, given that Gonzo has missed more games due to the fact that he has been out since play one of game one. If Gonzo cannot go, place him on IR and use the roster spot for a defensive player to allow some of the starters to rest. I dont think this is going to linger into next season, like Harrisons did, but looking at the here and now, the more time he is sidelined, the less effective he will be if indeed he does return.

The bottom line is, he better be in the starting rotation this week.

agreed

gonzo needs to play! what really makes me mad is how the injury happened with his cleat catching the sportsturf. that stuff is dangerous.

Agreed

He has to play in these last two games if he wants to play in the playoffs.

i agree

In route running, timing is everything. With that game experience him coming back could be ugly. And he needs to be fit. You don’ t get game fit without playing.

I disagree

The Colts should just IR him and be done with it. The thing is that Collie and Garcon already have a good rhythm with Manning right now and adding Gonzo to that mix could actually impact that.

More to the point, by adding both Vinny and Gonzo to the IR, we can bring in a few extra bodies on D to allow other key players to rest over the final 2 games….

When I say rest, I mean in the way the Colts were resting Freeney/Mathis in the Jags game….

I'm with you..

Remember Marvin coming back after a long lay off just to drop that crucial pass in the playoffs? Broke my heart. I think Garcon is doing a great job right now and there’s really no need to bring back a 3rd year player who may (or may not) be rusty.

Dont’ get me wrong…I think Gonzalez is a hell of a player. Save him for next year.

I don’t understand what the obsession is with IR. Do you really think that there are these super sexy players who have not been signed by ANY team in the league, including the browns, lions, etc. that can really help us win a super bowl? Yeah, depth is nice, in general, but guess what, if someone important goes down, like freeney, or powers, or bethea, noone we can get off the street will be substantively better than our current backups. If that happens we won’t win the super bowl even if we had 10 extra roster spots.

The colt’s approach makes sense: sure, it would be nice to have a 5th CB, but a semi-productive gonzalez is much more valuable to this team then a 5th CB who would only play if the starter got injured. And again, if key starters get injured, we will likely lose, period. Doesn’t matter if we have Keiwan Ratliff.

He's still better than Baskett

Should Gonzo start over Garcon? No. It’s not worth screwing up what we have been doing the for 13.5 games without him. But he’s still better than Baskett. Depth is good.

I'd love to have him back for the playoffs.

Any Gonzo is going to be good for the Colts

Of course I’d like to see him in these last two games before the playoffs, but I trust the Colts personnel department enough to understand that he’s being kept off the IR for a reason. With 10 days between games, I bet Gonzo gets his first practices in this week, but I still would be surprised to see him vs. the Jets.

I bet his first action since the season opener will be in Buffalo, and it’ll still be enough to sell me on keeping him on the playoff roster. I believe Gonzo’s role will still be limited, and he’ll only come in with certain packages depending on down and distance. I don’t think the Colts will throw in immediately back into the mix in front of Pierre and Austin.

Word on the street is that Gonzo had a secret operation on his knee. He’s done for the season, no doubt about it.

I don't doubt it..

Wasn’t he only projected to be out 6 weeks at first?

by HappyLittleTreez on Dec 18, 2009 4:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he was suppose to be out 4-8 weeks

after 10ish weeks they said he had surgery to clear out debris from the knee and would be back in 2-3 weeks. I think it’s been 4 so we are due for another update.

word on the street is dumb then

if he had surgery that was out for the year for sure he’d have been IR’ed before he even went under the knife.

I actually heard it from someone with ties to the organization. But whatever. It’s not like the Colts have ever refused to IR someone who should have been placed on IR only to allow him to return for a playoff game when he clearly wasn’t ready and whom only hurt the Colts’ chances of winning more than he helped. (cough) Yeap.

But he wouldn't return

for the first playoff game if he was done for the year. Completely different situations, so your argument if invalid.

Talk about illegal performance-enhancing activities

With CGI they can make him do anything—hop on his one CGI leg 100 MPH, leap 50 ft in the air for an alley-oop, maybe even motivate Randy Moss.

Meh

The bruise shouldn’t be too painful after 10 days if there is anything left of it anyways.

What's the obsession with IR?

What has Gonzalez done for us this year? Nothing. Well, that’s not accurate. His injury opened the door for both Garcon and Collie to flourish, which may not have happened as quickly with Gonzo on the field….

Look, Gonzo is NOT going to come back and be the starter on the field. We have guys who have been playing and practicing all year. Gonzo is going to be rusty. He is going to need time to go thru routes, timing, etc…

More to the point, will he be gun shy about being hit? We all saw what happened to Harrison, and that was a guy who was always healthy and was smart about getting down.

As for Vinny, there is just no point in bringing him back this year. His leg is not much better than Stover’s really. Both are highly accurate kickers. Both can make the big kicks. We aren’t using Vinny or Stover to kickoff…..

The bottom line is that we could bring in extra players from the PS or even sign a guy off the street just for spare bodies if need be. I’ll be the first to say I was wrong if Gonzo comes back and has a monster postseason….but I’ll be surprised if the guy even plays a half of a game of football for the rest of the year…

by DevilsReject on Dec 18, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What if we IR Vinny and then Stover gets hurt? Isn't he 40?

Or what if we IR Gonzo and then Collie goes down?

by shoein on Dec 18, 2009 10:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That's a risk any team takes...

But think about this…we have 2 WR’s on the PS, we have Baskett and Collie who are on the sidelines most of the game.

The bottom line here is that Gonzo and Vinny at best would be available to play the final game of the season. If they don’t dress for that game….they need to be IR’d….period..

by DevilsReject on Dec 19, 2009 12:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What if we released Stover, brought back Vinny, and he got hurt again?

What if we brought back Vinny and he missed every kick he attempted?
What if Collie decides to quit football next week?
What if Sorgi was really kidding this whole time and he is really the second coming of Joe Montana?

Sorry for the dramatics, but the chances of Stover getting hurt are probably the slimmest chances of anyone getting hurt. And the chances of Collie going down but Gonzo being the same Gonzo as last year are just above zero.

I especially agree that putting Vinny on IR is a sound idea. I am willing to wait another week for Gonzo, but if he isn’t at least practicing on a limited basis by next week there isn’t much point to bring him back. They can always use a couple of bodies for ST work as the season winds down to limit exposure to guys like Bullitt or help Dawson recover from whatever is wrong with him.
