Over from Gang Green Nation To Answer Any Questions

Hey their Stampede Blue members, popping over from Gang Green Nation the SB Nation Jets blog to answer any questions you may have ahead of our game this weekend. Please feel free to come over and post your own version up, as our members do enjoy this aspect.

Obviously we are coming off a very tough loss, another loss on the opponents last possession (5 of our 7 defeats have come this way) and that practically means our play-off chances are gone. Sure it's not mathematically impossible but if we can't beat the Falcons at home, I can't see us beating you guys on the road.

Anyway will just open this up, will check in throughout the week.

Cheers guys

Rex Ryan

Just like the Jets, we are in our first year with a new head coach. Caldwell and Rex Ryan definetly have different styles (to put it lightly). Looking back over the year, what is your general impression of Rex Ryan and where he can take your team? Do you still love his message to ticket holders in Week 2 against the Pats, or does it now seem a little overboard?

Thanks.

by hoosierdore on Dec 21, 2009 11:51 AM EST reply actions

I still have a lot of confidence in Rex, he has been as advertised, taken us to the best defence in the league, and not been quiet doing it. I don’t mind the message, and it seemed to work, any win is a good one over the Patriots and it’s a minor victory for the season, they had a hold of us at home so to break that is at least something. Rex is not the guy holding this team back, he is still learning, and he has made some clock management mistakes this season, but overall he is doing what I thought he would do. I had us 8-8 before the season started, and it seems we may be on course for that or something similar.

Fans are starting to become a little divided on him, he really isn’t learning from his mistakes and that is worrying. He has all the talent in the world, but he still forces balls into double coverage, he still slides head first, and he still refuses to check down when nothing is open down field. He seems fine since coming back from injury, however he is being forced to wear two braces, one on each knee, so that is obviously limiting his movement to a certain extent.

Our biggest weakness I think is most definitely the QB position, especially in the red zone, we really do stall once we get their, and when you are struggling to make plays through the air, it takes away what you can do on the ground. Although the offensive line and Thomas Jones have done such a great job this year, we need a better mix, the passing game is one of the worst in the NFL right now.

Do you miss Favre?

I kid, I kid. I would like Revis to have his worst game of the year. How can the Colts make it happen?

by diagenesis on Dec 21, 2009 11:58 AM EST reply actions

lol na Favre is well on his way to his usual late season breakdown.

Honestly, I have yet to see it so I really don’t know, Reggie Wayne could become invisible on Sunday, Revis is really that good. Easiest way to beat him is just don’t throw at him so he can’t make any plays on the ball. He will follow Wayne around all night, so I would pretty much eliminate him from your game plan.

With The Offensive line

Giving up 28 sacks and 50 hits thus far how do you think they will play against the Colts Defense coming off a 10 day rest?

by sandtiger812 on Dec 21, 2009 12:00 PM EST reply actions

The Offensive line is actually a great unit, a lot of the sacks can be attributed to the QB holding the ball too long and I think 4 of them were on Clemens in his game and a bit as the QB, and he really has no pocket awareness at all. Colts defence up front is obviously a great unit and it will be a real test, but I have faith in our guys, and feel confident that if Mark gets hit or sacked a lot, it;s probably going to be on him and not the o-line

So can we expect

Freeney and Mathis to have carrer sack days? Also, do you think our secondary could all have at least one pick this game?

Let’s just say that if your secondary doesn’t get a pick you might want to ask some questions, very rarely does Sanchez have a turnover free day. If we get down early (and I expect we will) and Sanchez has to force it, your guys could have a field day.

I don’t think they will have that much success, Brick is a above average LT on his way to being great, and Woody is no slouch either. If we get into a lot of 3rd and longs then you could get success, I expect a few sacks but not a ton.

He is better than advertised, has been for some time, he follows the number one guy around for the majority of the game, if we switch to zone, that is where you will pick up yards with Wayne, and with a QB like Manning, you will pick up on that pretty much all night. Mainly though he will be stuck on Wayne.

Before yesterday’s game it was the best in the league, and we really didn’t give up much yesterday either. Revis is a stud, and Sheppard is really starting to show his worth, we have a good nickel back in Lowery, and Rhodes/Leonhard are pretty decent (Rhodes when he wants to be). This will obviously be our biggest test, but leading in pass defence after week 14 and probably week 15 as well (not checked the stats today with teams still to play) we are obviously doing something right.

That’s probably going to fall on Rhodes who covered Gonzalez pretty well yesterday and Winslow the week before. He might get some success and he is the receiver I’m most worried about. Leonhard has been solid without being spectacular, Rhodes has been benched thanks to being ‘soft’ and has gained his spot back (although IMO he didn’t deserve it). Our linebackers are solid, Harris is a great ILB who is extremely underrated, Scott is all over the field most games. OLB wise Pace can be hot and cold but has the potential to have a massive game any time he steps out. Thomas is just a disappointment in general.

Watch out for Gholston though, he’ll get ya ;-) (If he is active lol)

How's Shonn Greene looked?

haven’t gotten to see many Jets games to keep following him. The big questions going in were his hands and whether he was fast enough to be anything but a short yardage back. After 14 games what’s the verdict on those?

Explosive, fast enough, hits the hole hard, receiving he has looked ok but not been targeted much, but he certainly has a case of fumbilitus, think he has lost 4 on the season, and he just doesn;t protect the football, which is very strange because he protected the ball very well in college. Future is extremely bright, but until he learns to hang onto the football, and with Jones cruising. He may get 10 carries in the game, around their.

I think Coach is using the right approach on this

To openly say we are going for it like the Saints did is wrong , it will just give the media the bone they want and it will fuel and give bulletin board motivation to your opponents.

IMHO they will try to win with the same approach they played the Jaguars, the only game that im not sure about is the bills, but if we are 15-0 and how the bills are playing lately i cant see how Polian, Coach or Peyton wont give it a shot at history, for Peyton it will be huge but bigger for Coach Caldwell just imagine a rookie coach with an undefeated record it will place him in the history books in his first year, so he must be dreaming about it.

We see what the field conditions are like in Buffalo, before we decide if we want to go for 16-0 if the field is really bad and icy I say we but in the 2nd and 3rd teams just to make sure something stupid doesn’t happen, like someone tripping over a frozen clump of grass. Buffalo could easily be the worst field conditions we will play in all season.

How does the No.1 Scoring Defense

go 7-7 through 14 games? Is Sanchez just giving away the store or are there some other big weaknesses that we’re not seeing?

by slash196 on Dec 21, 2009 2:43 PM EST reply actions

This is my question too.

As well as, why was Sanchez able to start out so well before he fell off?

by shoein on Dec 21, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

We can never get all three areas of our team to turn up on the same day, like the Atlanta game we missed 3 FG’s, the Miami game it was the special teams again, Sanchez was to blame for the Bills game and the New Orleans one and partly to blame for some others. I persist that if we had a capable QB, someone who just makes the basic throws, doesn’t turn the ball over, say a Chad Pennington, this team is likely 9-5 minimum, and probably something like 10-4 or 11-3. The defence constantly gives us a chance to win, and we just can’t get the offence through the air to match it. Our losses have come by 14, 4, 3, 5, 2, 17 and 3 points, so outside of the New Orleans game where Sanchez practically gave them 14 points right off the bat, and the 2nd New England game where again Sanchez put in a shocker, we have been losing by the smallest of margins, and often on the last possessions, 5 of those losses have come on the last possession for the opposition.

I like Sanchez but If I’m being completely honest, he is the reason we are 7-7 right now. I think Shoein it’s because NFL teams didn’t really have much tape on Sanchez, an NFL scout told me that it takes three weeks to get decent film on a quarterback in the league, especially after minimal college starts, I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the scout said this and Sanchez was very good for the first three weeks then dropped off.

My question...

Would be about T. Jones. We here at SB are used to having the MSM downplay our team’s success. Why do you think they do the same thing to Jones? I have always liked him and think he should get more press. What does Jet nation say about this?

by emiller17 on Dec 21, 2009 2:43 PM EST reply actions

You know I personally think that Jones doesn’t get enough credit by Jets fans and definitely not enough credit by the national media. I really think it’s because he is not really a highlight reel player, he won’t do any little moves and break off 80 yard runs, he grinds you down, he takes 5 yards here, 4 yards there and then a 12 yarder, and just goes from their. Also on a team of big talkers like Scott/Rhodes/Jenkins, he really doesn’t say too much, he has a great work out routine that he sticks to which is really paying off since turning 30, he’s a humble guy who really doesn’t like to talk about himself. The Media like ESPN love a trash talker or selfish showboat, and Jones just isn’t interested in anything like that. The important thing to him is to let his game do his talking.

Your right about that, and so I think we will go with the best available player. Every Jets fan has a different opinion here, some want to go to the defensive line for depth, some want to bring in another cornerback, people who are annoyed with Kerry Rhodes antics want to go with a safety and trade Rhodes. Personally I just think we need to take the best available, I wrote last week that Golden Tate would be one of the preferred choices for me, but someone like Arthur Jones out of Syracuse would be fine with me as well. I think we do need to get some depth on the offensive and defensive line, but in the first round I think it is best player available.

Well we have the best pass defence in the league, and Manning throws his picks, so try and turn those into scores. We have the best cover corner in the league hands down, and a 2x pro bowler on the other side as well. We bring a lot of pressure, we might not get the sacks but we get the pressure on early and force early throws. Manning is the greatest QB in the game so will it work on him? I have no idea.

I guess the best plan would be to run, run, run and take as much time off the clock as possible. I think by the 4th quarter many teams realise that it is pointless throwing at Revis, you would be surprised how many teams come in and immediately target him, like they are trying to prove something, only problem is, he doesn’t get beat and offences get off to slow starts against us.

The last two times Manning has faced the Rex Ryan defense

Here is his stat line:

32/45, 520 yds, 7 TDs, 0 INTs, sacked twice.

That’s a Yds/Att of 11.6 and a ANY/A (we love this stat around here) of 13.8!

The Jets have, by far, the best defense in the league. Do you think the Jets will throw out what they’ve done for 14 games now and put in some new schemes just for Manning, or roll the dice again with what has worked against 31 other teams, but not the Colts?

by mgrex03 on Dec 23, 2009 9:24 AM EST reply actions

I’m sure that we will throw some new things in their, I think everyone is going to respect Manning’s ability, at the same time we have a good cover secondary, and while we will throw different looks at him, the idea is going to be the same as it always has been. Get Revis on the main threat, bring the pressure, force an early throw and hope the secondary get their hands in and break up the pass. I don’t expect we will see many sacks of Manning, you guys have only given up 10 right? and we don’t get that many sacks, but like week 2 against the patriots, we got 0 sacks, but got 22 QB hits. So the whole point of the defence is to bring the pressure and force the early throw.

We've given up the fewest sacks and the fewest QB hits this year.

Manning’s a good reason for this. He doesn’t seem to trust his line too much, so he’s always cautious and quick about his decision making.

It should be fun watching the Jets D against the Colts O.

If Miami wins in their house against the texans or the jags pull a W against the Pats

your team is eliminated for the playoffs right? since those games are early the Jets will know prior to the start of the game vs the Colts or during the 1st quarter that they’ve been eliminated. How do you think this news will affect the Jets focus and or desire to give 100% in this game?

by thebossuzzi on Dec 23, 2009 12:11 PM EST reply actions

No I don’t think that’s the case, because if they both win, and we win, and we win next week and they both lose then we are in, well other teams need to lose as well, the Ravens for instance. If either of those win and we lose then our play-off chances are gone. I don’t think it will effect them all too much, Rex won’t allow it to effect them very much, despite the early games we still have to win this one, so the mentality wont change.

Two questions

1. How is the Jets 2 minute offense?
2. Aside Revis, who do you think will have an outstanding day for the Jets?

by indymike on Dec 23, 2009 9:27 PM EST reply actions

What’s a two minute offense?? ;-) It’s not terrible, but it completely depends on Sanchez, putting him in a clear passing situation is not going to end well for us until he realises that he can’t throw into double coverage in the NFL and get away with it

I think Thomas Jones might have a good day, and maybe Kerry Rhodes, he is going to have a big challenge with Clark, but challenges seem to bring the best out in him. I’m hoping that Brick has a good game, but against Freeney that’s not guaranteed. However we all think thatBrick has come on so much, so this is a great test for him and we can really see how far he has come.

I’m really not sure if he will be more cautious or not, he seems to continue to make the same mistakes which is what is so frustrating to fans. After he threw 5 INT against Buffalo he came back the week after and attempted just 16 passes, completing 9 for 143 yards, a TD and 0 INT, he was able to do that because we dominated Oakland on the ground that day. After 3 INT against New Orleans, he came back and threw for 172 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT in Miami. So he seems to respond quite well, but it completely depends on the game situation, you need to stop the run and force us into obvious passing situations, doing that will create turnovers for your defence.
