Gonzo and Brown Return to Practice

As sandsnake informed everyone earlier this week from a Peter King quote, it looks as if it may be legit. According to this newspaper, both Anthony Gonzalez and Donald Brown practiced Monday. From the Tribune Star in Terre Haute (http://www.tribstar.com/sports/local_story_355182537.html):

"Gonzalez, Brown return to practice — Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez and Brown took part in Monday afternoon’s short workout. Gonzalez has been sidelined since suffering a right knee injury Sept. 13 in the season opener with Jacksonville. He was due back in mid-November but underwent arthroscopic surgery, which had delayed his return. Brown, meanwhile, suffered a chest injury against Baltimore on Nov. 29 and has not played since. He had been sidelined earlier in the season, missing two games with a shoulder injury that he incurred against St. Louis on Oct. 25. It’s not known whether either player will be able to play against the Jets this week."

So it looks like they AT LEAST practiced, which is a good sign. I'm not looking too hard into that last sentence, as it is not known because it likely was not addressed by any of the staff or team. Plus, its obviously not a smart journalistic move to use what is clearly a short, light practice and get the fans' hopes up. I would expect that they return against the Jets. No update on Vinny, though. It doesn't say whether he practiced or not, so we'll have to play the guessing game with him for just a little longer it seems, which I am really beginning to despise.

UPDATE: Oehser has a recap of our fearless leader, Bill Polian's radio show where he fills in a lot of the blanks for the questions we still have. http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-4450-Indianapolis-Colts-Examiner~y2009m12d22-Indianapolis-Colts-WR-Anthony-Gonzalez-an-endofweek-gametime-decision-for-Sunday. A few tidbits...

-Gonzo will practice this week. The team will evaluate how he does and he will be a game-time decision. They would like to get him as many reps as possible should he play.

-AV will kick this week in practice, or at least try to, and it sounds like Polian wants to see him out there.

-Jerraud Powers is likely going to sit out the remainder of the regular season to be fresh for the playoffs. Since he's a rookie and may be beginning to feel worn down from a longer season, this could be a very smart move.

Thank God

about Gonzo. My only question, if he plays well, and Manning and him find the timing, how do you justify sitting Collie?

Who plays in that 3WR set that the Colts use so much. I think Wayne and Frenchie get spots, but Gonzo vs Collie is a hard one.

Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself. I just hope the good news on those two continue to come in this week, especially for Gonzo.

At this point, its simple

You bring in Gonzo based on what the defense is doing, based on who you are facing. However, I think you have to use Collie as the 3WR. You can bring in Gonzo to give breathers and what have you, but until he’s running 100%, I don’t think you disrupt what Collie/Garcon have built with Manning…

Garcon's hurt

so it’s an easy decision.

For now…

by willyduer on Dec 22, 2009 8:25 AM EST up reply actions

Garcon

just bruised his hand. Nothing serious. He’ll play on Sunday I’m sure.

yeah its a boo boo

Just read everything said about him in a thick french accent. i swear youll get a laugh.

I say put Gonzo at 4th WR. Hell still get a lot of PT. But a guy cant come in into a system this comples 3 weeks b4 playoffs. its too risky. Bring him in for a breather and when we spread the field

(my Dad about to place a bet)"Hey Karim who do you like in the Colts Game?" "I dont know dad, Haydens out, so is Gonzalez, Bracket, Sanders, Jackson, and maybe Freeney" Dad-"Is Manning playing?" Me-"Yeah".. "Lets go with Indy"

by KarimTheDream on Dec 23, 2009 12:43 AM EST up reply actions

i agree just put him in as 4th wide reciever and do some plays with that i think we could be very effective if we can get gonzo back in and acclimated

id say put wayne outside left with (gonzo/collie) inside left or right each and leave garcon outside right

GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!

If we go up by alot

I wouldnt be surprised if they take Wayne and Clark out, should give Gonzo and Collie and maybe even Baskett a few chances

Im still really surprised AV isnt on IR, Stovers a decent kicker, so its not like we are really really desperate to have V back, Id rather have a roster spot then the slim chance of AV coming back and making kicks Stover wouldnt of made.

by ColtsUK on Dec 22, 2009 4:03 AM EST reply actions

Why would Stover get hurt?

It’s not like kickers that only kick 1 or 2 field goals a game with no kick-off duties get hurt a lot. Especially ones who haven’t even played the whole season.

You get a rec.

Just because I’ve been waiting so long to hear this news.

At this point I’m not sure if you can justify putting Gonzo in with his lack of playing over the last several months, unless he’s in really good shape (which I’m doubting). I think he’s just good depth at this point in case of an injury. Hope I’m wrong.

That is why it is the smart move

to play Gonzo now, in a couple of games that mean nothing. He can get a lot of reps and work out the kinks. That way, in the playoffs he and Peyton will have their timing back to around where it was in the offseason and last year, and he will have some game experience. I expect to see a lot of him in the next two weeks, should he of course play.

If we were just throwing him in there right away in the playoffs without any warmup games, I’d echo your anxiety, but these are just two games that mean nothing. Still, with the way Garcon and Collie have played, I expect Gonzo to be no more than a 3rd option receiver, at least to start out.

Agreed

I should have clarified more. I am all for playing him as much as can be during the meaningless games, if he gets to suit up. But I wouldn’t want him playing a significant role in a playoff game with so much layoff if he doesn’t get any reps the next two games.

thanks for following up on this!

I’m so excited that he is practicing.I’ll be very happy to have the “problem” of too many receivers.

I think it is interesting

That after all the “Addai BOO! Brown YAY!” talk, no one here seems to care about DB making it back. It’s going to be great having 4 RBs that all contribute something different in the backfield.

I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

A typical NFL team's fanbase

has a “what have you done for me lately” mentality. Addai was struggling early on and averaging around 2.8 yds a carry or something like that (which is just as much the line’s fault) and Brown looked much more explosive and had that big run against St. Louis where he went 2 carries for 58 yards. Since that game, where he obviously went out w/ a shoulder injury, he has been very quiet in the games he has played in since. Addai, on the other hand, has really stepped up his game, isn’t dancing around so much, and has proven to be a more than valuable cog in this offensive unit. When Brown comes back and plays well, everyone will get behind him again. I hope that happens because having two very good running backs is going to be huge in the postseason.

I said that

Because there is no one in here talking about how exciting it will be seeing him back on the field. EVERY comment is about a guy who played one half of one game. Now, I AM happy that Brown will be back, and I hope he comes back refreshed and with strong legs. I can see us really needed two competent running backs in our playoff run. Let’s hope he has taken the time off to work on blocking and catching the ball and absorbing the playbook.

I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

Was it even one half of one game?

correct me if I’m wrong, but Gozo went down on like the first play of the first offensive possession did he not?

Im excited that Brown will be back

I think the reason there is more Gonzo talk is because his injury is more serious and there are no guarantees he will be back on the field. I have a boat load of confidence that Brown will be big for us as we enter the postseason, but Gonzo must show he is 100% or he must be sent to IR.

Gonzi BETTER play

that is the only way he can get back on the field for the playoffs

Brown and Gonzo

I’ll be glad to have both back but have been impressed with their replacements. I think the rookie receivers have done well and Hart and Simpson have also played well. I’m not sure why but I’m still pulling for Hart to find a niche on this team.

Re: Nougatieri

The longer AV stays on the sideline, wasting a roster spot, while Stover does the exact same thing AV would have done anyways (make most kicks and miss a couple here and there), the more I wish they would just put him on IR so we can move on with this and free up a spot for some more special teams and/or depth as the regular season winds down.

I give him one more week.

I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

by AceOfSpades on Dec 22, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions

Not really

Stover has made a few chip shots and a bunch of extra points, and missed a long field goal by a lot. You don’t sign kickers just because they can make easy kicks. If it ever comes down to a long field goal in the playoffs for the win, I have little confidence in Stover’s leg strength. Vinatieri still has the leg to make those kicks, and if he is healthy, like we all hope, he should make those kicks. Vinny has the leg that Stover does not.

Stover missed

on a field goal even AV would have struggled on. Both of our FG kickers do NOT have the deep kick.

AV’s longest kick in the last 5 years was a 51 yarder I do believe last year…..otherwise he’s been struggling from anything beyond 40….

by DevilsReject on Dec 22, 2009 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

AV

Vinatieri’s accuracy and range were suffering last year too. I wonder how long the injury was nagging him… Stover has been getting the job done. Who needs 60 yard FGs when you’ve got manning and all the weapons he has to work with?
