Ten things I know the morning after.
1. I still love my Colts.
2. The Colts are a great football team.
3. This season, we've proven to everyone that we can overcome ANYTHING, from injuries to coaching changes.
4. WE have the best QB in the NFL.
5. Our positioning in the playoff seeds is the envy of every other team in the AFC.
6. The fans are not used to losing, any which way. We'll get over it.
7. We don't have to like management to love our team.
8. It's going to be a long 3 weeks.
9. After this disappointment, the winning will be that much sweeter in the playoffs.
10. If Peyton can stand at the podium and say "we follow the philosophy of our coaches with all our hearts", then I say "I'll follow Peyton with all my heart".
I'm personally angry and disgusted by the way management handled things yesterday. But this too shall pass. Remember, we still have what we had on Saturday. Nothing has changed. If you truely bleed blue like I do, you'll swallow your pride and root like hell when it's time for the first playoff game.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Rec’d… nice job, Indy Lori. Being human and having feelings sucks sometimes, but we must muddle on, yes?
OT: my Charger fan coworker gave me a hug this morning…I feel dirty. sympathy from a Charger fan – again. I choose to look at that from the perspective of: well, at least it won’t happen because of a playoff loss this year. This is my yearly hug – its over – its time to move on to the Super Bowl!

3. We have the biggest buffoon on the planet as a GM, and he’s wasting the Manning years.

Because we ran into the playoffs last year and where did that get us?
And we rested people in 2004 before winning the first round.
Aren’t we forgetting THOSE bits of history?

Week 17
Manning only played long enough to get his 4000 yards and get Marvin a record. The rest was Sorgi. Most of the starters rested.
We then went on to score a whopping 17 points on an average defense, which included a near-fluke play to Wayne as the Chargers were caught napping.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
As a Colts fan I would not call it a near fluke play
in fact, it’s a Manning standard. (opponents’ fans might call it a fluke because it surprises them) We saw similar in the SB win over the Bears (blown coverage, Reggie runs solo to the EZ) and earlier this year against the Texans, IIRC, with Dunta Robinson celebrating his big hit with his teammates as Manning called for a quick snap and a 30+ yard pass to Collie. Probably happens a couple times a year with Manning-he’s watching the D between plays to see where their cracks are. (Not always successfully—he also threw a pick on this type of “we caught ’em” play earlier this year—the curse of experienced DBs).
So you think that if Manning played six more series in the finale he’d have been sharper the next week against SD?
Hey, in 2006 we played all-out till the end in week 17 against Miami and came out in the playoffs… sucking big-time in the playoffs. Manning had like 3 INTs against KC and we won because we held them without a 1st down nearly until the 4th quarter. 15 pts on 5 FGs in Baltimore? Not a single TD for one of the offenses of the decade? Yes, Balt has a great D, but that’s not what I expect out of a well-oiled machine on offense. Would we have been better or worse if Manning and crew had rested? No idea, but in the playoffs that year, after playing the full season, the offense had two excellent quarters in four games (most of the SB they played really well, but a notch below excellent—of course that was a MONTH after the season ended and two weeks after the previous game, so hard to tie that to the rest/no rest argument). Is that kind of offensive production what you want in the playoffs? Not me.
The result was great—and the O certainly played well, but it was the D that won it all for us. The D, which most people say does not rely as much on timing and cohesiveness and is less detrimentally affected by rest.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

I think what irks me the most..
.. was watching the players on the sideline who clearly wanted to play. who KNEW they could win. And not being allowed to. That is really a blow to the competitive spirit.
Was that the right thing to do from a strategic point of view. Maybe. Health is very important as our last two playoff runs proved ..
but I really don’t understand not letting peyton at least finish the third quarter.
Another thing that bothers me is the way they threw painter to the wolves. What an awful situation to throw a rookie into. He has to know he was a big factor in the end of all the winning streaks. And he realistically had no chance against a desperate jets D. .. And setting him up to take that abuse from the crowd. That kind of things can wreck a rookies confidence. Would any of you wanted to have been painter yesterday? I really wouldn’t have wanted to be in his shoes…
An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...
We can love our Colts and call management morons too!
Lori, most of us love this team so much we wanted a shot at perfection. Manning should be given that opportunity to go down in history. No one deserves it more! Of course we will regroup and kick some vengeful ass in the playoffs. It was a shot at history, and management sucks!
No, the management doesn't suck.
Lions management sucks. Redskins management sucks. Raiders management sucks. I could continue, but even those teams have better management in all their suckiness than you or I would provide.
We are a spoiled bunch, aren’t we? We are so used to winning all the time. I love it!!! It beats the alternative of coping with a lousy franchise. These are good years, indeed!

Point of View
We are a fanbase full of people who have come to tolerate losing at the most important time of the season. Why play so hard early in the year if we are going to throw it all away when it matters most?
IMO, all of the apologists for Polians annual destruction of the best Colts teams are what keeps him in charge. At least this season people are finally speaking out about it.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
I appreciate your perspective.
I don’t, however, think we have nearly as much to blame Polian for as we have to thank Polian for.
Every year we debate rest vs. rust. I don’t buy into the momentum crowd. The stats tell us that teams win with rest and without it, and teams with momentum sometimes win and sometimes lose.
This year seems different, though, for a few reasons. First, we had a perfect regular season in sight. Second, we went all out in the last meaningless game against JAX. Third, we started those guys all the way into the third quarter. It sure seemed like we were going for it. Fourth, we put the rookie in a tough scenario, backed way up at the ten. That is intimidating for anyone, let alone the new guy. And against the Jets defense? No easy task for your first time out.
I’d have liked for the starters to do one more drive and increase the lead. I think that was their intentions. Stop the Jets at the start of thw third, get a two score lead, then yank everyone. That plan went down in flames when we let them have a 106 yard kick return for a TD. Did you see Manning’s face there? I think Polian and company should’ve adjusted accordingly and kept the boys in a little longer.
However, despite yesterday’s decisions, Polian has been an amazing GM to whom we owe the team’s ability to even be competitive.
by coltsfanawalt on Dec 28, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions
Agree with your points
and also agree that Polian is very good at evaluating talent, assembling a top level team and drafting for need and skill. I think Polian is horrible at stepping in to do the coaches job, which he seems to do every season around this time. We have managed to fight through it for one Super Bowl, but there have been too many heartaches.
I agree that they should have kept the starters in for one last drive if the intention was to pull everyone. That way, they could have scored again or at least forced the Jets to drive for a score (something they hadn’t done all game) and eliminate most of the pressure that was forced on Painter.
Painter doesn’t deserve this, he never had a chance and it sucks.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
I was thinking the same thing.
It does seem like he pulls rank here over the coaches wishes. I’m not positive, but this seemed to be something that Caldwell has accepted and Polian has defended.
A GM needs to be able to let his coaches coach, and he needs to hire men that he trusts to do that better than himself. If there is a chink in Polian’s armour, there it is. And public relations. And drafting offensive line. But other than that…
This is just a tough week. Hard to move on when we wanted 16-0 so bad.

Of course we're talking about it!
Why wouldn’t we? It was profoundly insane and tarnished Indy’s image forever. I’m sure it will be talked about for a long time as one of the dumbest decisions ever made in the history of the game. As I’ve stated, this has nothing to do with the wonderful Colt players, who are, no doubt, just as disgusted as the fans. I’m all for them and always will be. I think some people want to quit talking about it, because, deep down, it’s a sore topic which they know should never have happened. Others deal with it better by venting a bit. To each their own.
I think you're putting way to into this
it’ll be talked about until the end of the week and then might come up if this scenario ever occurs again in the future. That’s about it.

11. Colts better win the Super Bowl !
The Colts “organization” elects to throw the Jets game in front of the home-town fans, the rationale of these geniuses – saving the starters for a future football game that the team might never get to. When the folks that run this team condone such behavior – the team better go all the way, otherwise, the Colts, in defeat, will never, ever live it down.
I assume you mean that because we were undefeated, right?
Because the Colts, and most every other playoff bound team, “throws” a game here and there at the end of the year when they have everything clinched. It’s common practice. It will happen plenty next week.
Be mad about losing a perfect season, but don’t hold the Colts accountable for playing backups in front of the hometown fans or throwing a game unless you have done so every year to every team and intend to do it every year going forward.
Again, I know the peculiarities of this one. We were 14-0. But let’s call it what it is and not lose perspective amidst the emotion. The problem was not resting starters or playing backups or losing a game to another team with different priorities. The frustration is that we were 14-0 when we elected to do this.
by coltsfanawalt on Dec 29, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions
Yes.
You’re right, it was the intentional loss of perfection that has now put the Colts under the microscope. A “regular” loss would not have created the pressure that the Colts must now operate under. Why not leave Peyton in there to hand it off the rest of the afternoon – no throws no risk – a regular loss, hell, maybe even a win. Instead, Indy was asked to throw-in-the-towel (by ownership) in the middle of a very winnable game with the real chance of history on the line. Uncool.
I understand that many playoff teams, maybe even some lousy teams with an eye on the draft, “throw” games at the end of a regular season, you’re point is well taken. But, I just can’t get over the circumstance of this Jets game, especially with the Bills on tap for the final week. We’re told the solace of a Super Bowl victory will more than make up for the pain & anguish of giving up in the middle of the Jets game.
I say again, the Colts best win the Super Bowl this season… or else.

I can understand that. And I relate to the disappointment. I wanted it all.
Now, my eyes are adjusting to the playoffs. I want to win in January and February.
by coltsfanawalt on Dec 29, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions
Not perfect
I’m not that agitated about the Colts giving up last Sunday, there was some chance that key players could have been injured. Why the coach sent the starters out to play half the game and get the lead only to pull them out later on – makes no sense to me but, I’m only a fan. Question – if Polian wanted to protect his starters and the unbeaten streak meant nothing to him – why play them at all ? The team will be rusty in the next meaningful game they play no matter if they played two quarters last Sunday or two quarters against the Bills this weekend. The only thing that bothers me is this play-one-half weirdness.
That said, I am in full agreement with you on the (unintended) pressure that the Colts brain-trust has thrust upon this team, it was so unnecessary – really dumb are the two words that come to mind. Indy fans have now been set up for a big fall (with no complicity on our part) and if the Colts fail to win the Super Bowl, the landing won’t be kind. I’d much rather go into the playoffs feeling good about the team and the team feeling good about the coach & the owner. Colt fans have been offered a trade by team management – an undeated season in exchange for a Super Bowl title. We’ve kept our end let’s see if they keep theirs.

I'm sitting here,
Wondering how much time will need to pass before those of us who are still incensed with last Sunday finally run out of gas. Now, I’m just an old gray fat guy who has been die hard for the Colt’s for about 45 years now, and I find it harder to stay pissed for long periods of time. Particularly when there is nothing to be done about it now. I suspect maybe after the Colts get their first playoff win, some of what’s driving this will be replaced with the desire to see the Colts bring home the trophy again.
IndyLori, this one's for you... a great quote about Peyton
from a web page evaluating WRs for the HOF.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=4837
“Wayne very probably will go, but I do slightly feel he shouldn’t (though it would be far from a terrible call). I very much doubt he’ll be only person Peyton Manning puts in Canton, and as a traumatised Texans fan, I will simply view that as an endorsement of the fact that a single spot in the Hall is really not enough to do that man justice. He isn’t human. He can’t be.”
