An apology to Bill Polian
Dear Bill Polian:
We (Colts fans) are sorry for the way we have treated you the last 2 days. You see, part of this is your fault. We have been so used to winning games since you came here that we have forgotten what it is like to lose. We didn't realize that only 1 team led the decade in wins. We also didn't realize how hard it is to win 23 games in a row. We didn't realize that every NFL team hasn't won a Super Bowl. We didn't realize that drafting players like Manning, Wayne, James, Mappes, Freeney, and finding free agents like Saturday, Brackett, and Lacey requires more than luck. We took the high character and integrity the organization and its players have showed over the years for granted. You would think that we would understand that losing a meaningless game today so our players and team would be in the best possible position to win the Super Bowl is in the best interests of the team. Apparently, some of us didn't. We are sorry about that.
We realize that you have been saying for the last 3 weeks how the undefeated season wasn't one of our goals. We just weren't listening. Then, we reacted badly when the inevitable happened. Some of us aren't happy about when it happened, but we'll get over it. We realize you are not a PR person. But, frankly, we don't care if you are or not. We just want you to continue to do what you do best. We realize you don't like guys like Kravitz and have treated them badly. I would encourage you to continue to do that. Their agenda is to create controversy, and yours is to win football games. I like your agenda better.
When you came here, we never dreamed this 10 year run would happen. When a certain player wearing #18 said to you that "If you don't draft me, I will be kicking your ass for the next 18 years" you listened to him and drafted him. Some GM's might have been offended by that. As a matter of fact, there is no organization that trusts a player and gives a player as much control as we have given Manning. Most teams would be uncomfortable with that. Kudos for the Colts for recognizing a special once in a lifetime talent and letting him do what he does best.
As a write this, I hear a politican wants your team to refund ticket money. You don't owe us anything. I would bet that neither he or any of us fans have spent time around the players and have looked at an injury and an IR list. He probably doesn't know about the general health of the 45 or 53 players on the team. As a matter of fact, neither the politician or the fans have ever played in the NFL and have seen or felt the toll these games can take on players over the course of the season. Shortening a season not only helps players heal and puts them in the best position to win the Super Bowl, it also extends their careers. We obviously weren't thinking about that, and we are sorry.
We (the fans) hope this doesn't affect the team. Our guess is it won't. The team you assembled has so much professionalism that we couldn't imagine that happening. It is hard to believe that we said you quit on the game. Imagine that. We forgot about the Tampa Bay game, the Minnesota game, the Houston game, and all of the comebacks in games this year and in previous years that your team could have easily quit on and we wouldn't have faulted them. Because of those games, we can't leave our TV sets or leave games early because of what might happen. Is it possible you were giving us all a break and we didn't realize that?
You see, all we really want is another Super Bowl win. It didn't occur to us that this game really meant nothing in the big picture, and all you were trying to do is make sure that our players were healthy going into the playoffs. We hear about former NFL players with concussions and crippling injuries and we just assume all teams have no regard for their players health and will do anything to put their players on the field, regardless of their situation. Your team has always put the players welfare first and for that we are thankful.
We can't wait for the playoffs to start. We will be there for our team just like we have been for the last 20 years. Remember, any comments about Sunday's game are made by fans who only want the very best for the Colts. They may not know how to express themselves correctly. Whatever you do, DO NOT STOP. It has worked for 11 years and we are grateful for it. After the Buffalo game, it is time to start the quest for the real "perfect season" that we want, and that is the playoffs and the Super Bowl. GO COLTS.

Well done
I’ve felt that some of us Colts fans forget how fortunate we are to follow such a uniquely great franchise from top to bottom.
Even sacrificing a perfect season doesn’t make it right to all of a sudden bash the Owner, GM, and Head coach that you’ve defended all year. it’s a regular season meaningless game, and Peyton Manning is still undefeated this season…I’ve said it all year, That dude Peyton isn’t losing a game this season

Dear Mr. Polian,
This guy doesn’t speak for all of us.
Just because you stated weeks ago that 16-0 wasn’t a goal doesn’t make it right or OK. This was only the 3rd time in NFL history a team reached 14-0. We could have easily had a perfect regular season and, possibly, the greatest season an NFL team has had or will ever have. Instead, you ignored the obvious wishes of fans and your players.
In the end, your job is to provide a form of entertainment. Guess what? You did the exact friggin’ opposite smart guy.
Still defending your decision Mr. Polian? I invite you to review the broadcast tape of the game. Watch closely the faces of your players and the fans who contribute to your salary. Read just a few of the countless articles, newscasts, and comments discussing your decision. If you honestly can’t see that it wasn’t worth it, well, I guess nothing will sway you.
Unfortunately for you, winning the superbowl won’t appease me or many , many others. In fact, it will make it all the worse. Winning the superbowl means 19-0 was a very near certainty. It means ones of the greatest achievements in history was basically given away by one of our own. That is both shameful and unacceptable. You owed it to the fans to at least consider our wishes. After all we pay ridiculous sums of money to provide you with an arena to be a millionaire. Instead, you pissed on us and are now surprised to find us upset.
Mr. Polian, if this team is 14-0 next year and you pull this same garbage, I seriously hope you’re ready to pack your bags. I’ll be there to hold the door open for you.
Sincerely,
A Fan.
Haha you again...
and this time you’re actually trying to insult me using a picture of a cat.

First of all...
congratulations on NOT using a whole damn picture book to try and get and your lame, childishly-worded point across.
Secondly, this wasn’t a decision every colts fan saw coming; not after the way they played against Jacksonville in the same sort of meaningless game. Just look at the faces of the fans at the game. Shit look at the players’ faces. Not that any of this information is new; i’m just reminding you since you CLEARLY are looking to be a gigantic dick about things. You act like Bill Polian is your boyfriend or something.
You quote my superbowl comment as if it has something to do with bandwagons. If you used your brain for five minutes you’d see how it’s anything BUT that. Winning the superbowl means 19-0 was a very near certainty, the benefits of which have already been beaten to death. But go ahead, little guy, and keep spouting off your angry, pointless drivel. Don’t forget to add a few cat pictures every now and then to distract people from the garbage you’re writing.
What are you? 12?

Sooo…lets say the Colts were 15-0 right now. Buffalo is supposed to get absolute shit weather for the next week (snow, rain, etc). Now, do you really, really, really want to put your our best players in a snow game, where the hits come harder, and the probability of a freak accident increases? Is it worth getting your star players bodies smashed against rock hard ground? I would have loved to see a 16-0 season followed by 3 post season wins, however, 1 slip, 1 hit, 1 cheap shot is all it takes to f*ck it all up. This isn’t only about the risk of losing Manning, because if we lose Wayne, we’re probably done, if we lose Freeney or Mathis, we’re probably done, if we lose Saturday, we’re done….it just isn’t worth it. If they were playing in a dome in Week 17 or somewhere warm, I would say, “hey, maybe get your guys in there to build a lead of sorts, and then sit ’em and see what happens”, but I am sure everyone knows what kind of weather and conditions Buffalo gets in January. Polian would have been screwed either way…he sits his guys, he gets bitched at, he plays em, and someone gets hurt, he gets bitched at. This is a lose-lose situation for the guy, and I guess he rightfully felt that sitting his stars down for the greater good exceeded a chance at history. I am not saying how he handled and how he explained himself are correct (because yeah, he isn’t a PR guy), and if you thought that sickening feeling you had last Sunday when Painter came in was bad, imagine the nausea you would encounter if Peyton was grasping a body party on the cold, hard, icy ground in Buffalo, NY.
Great Post
I could not agree more with your thoughts. We were having this conversation earlier today. I would love to know (the truth) if we were playing in Miami as a season ending game would this all have been different? Remember Polian probably knows a bit about Buffalo weather! And this is their freaking Super Bowl.
Exactly!
Freak accidents do happen. I.E Colt Mccoy. And having already suffered a defeat because of his freak injury in the championship game I would rather not lose a super bowl because of another freak injury. Just saying…

Of the letter to Polian. I still don’t like it, but I’d rather have Polian and a team that is 14-1 than be a fan of, say, the Rams (I live in Missouri, so I can say that).

I Paid for a ticket to the game on Sunday. I was there.
I don’t want my money back.
My team has the #1 seed and a first round bye. Pulling starters doesn’t change that, I can’t wait for more great football from the Colts.

That’s a sad, but true, statement to make.
Well said, sir. I am more apologetic for how Indianapolis has behaved than anything, and all this does for our image is give pundits like Deon Sanders and Skip Bayless fodder to rub our noses is it for quite some time to follow. Thought you disliked their comments before, colts fans, just get ready.
I think once the initial anger wears off
Most fans will be fine with this decision. I think a lot of us were expecting more given the way the Jacksonville game went. I haven’t seen anyone complain about sitting players who were even mildly dinged for a game that was meaningless in the standings. But Caldwell’s statements about healthy players playing I think raised expectations, that we could go 16-0 since Peyton was healthy and could play.
Polian also was a poor guy to explain things, and he made a mess of things on the radio show. I think Caldwell should have been a little more explicit in his post game that we were so dinged up and REALLY did not want peyton flattened by the Jets with so much of our O-line and Addai not there to protect.
An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...
Not signing off on the apology
I am not sorry for still being pissed at you Mr. Polian. You did this bc you wanted to make sure we didn’t have a chance to play the Steelers or the Texans in the playoffs…because you’re a panzy. You might as well be the BCS of the NFL, because you don’t care about the sport as much as you care about your $$$. Grow a pair. You’re not above winning.
I voted, you have to sit out and rest next season. You look tired.
Sincerely,
Broken heart
NOW PRODUCE A SUPERBOWL WIN!
THATS THE ONLY WAY THIS WILL BE FORGIVEN…. you pissed away our chance to make history why? 37 year old record 37… some team wins the superbowl every year… 37 YEARS! it sounds to me that means that record is 37 times better than another ring… if we dont get a superbowl win this year then you should be FIRED!
What about the Colts' "next man up" philosophy?
I actually offer no apology to Colts management since Coach Dungy and now Coach Caldwell have always had the organizational philosophy of “next man up” whenever any player has been injured. Why change that when you have a chance of football immortality and a whole city (and State) are behind you? P.S. I still love watching the Colts play and cherish every opportunity that I get to watch Payton take a snap!
Scewed thinking
When you value 23 wins in a row, and most wins in a decade over a chance at immortality, your values are messed up.
Seems to me Polian wanted to best the Patriots at 2 of the 3 things he could have, while he left the best, and reasonably with in reach, on the dusty floor.
Please stop casing Patriots records, and concentrate on what you should be after, YOUR team winning the Superbowl. Not to validate you as team of the decade, but because you are the odds on favorite to do so. I dont think polian will get extra $$ for winning more than the pats, but he sure seems concurned about them/their stuff.
seems to me
that if Polian truly wanted to one-up the Pats, he WOULD have gone for the 19-0 season to show that while the Pats couldn’t do it, the Colts could (assuming they did, of course). That said, I agree that saying you’re striving for some – but not all the records – is strange. I can’t reconcile it in my own head, so have decided not to and just root on my boys, hoping they can move through the playoffs and onto Super Bowl victory.
How can you not love a team that does this?
I think the records Polian values have a consistency
It seems that the records Polian values all have to do with sustained excellence over years at a time, the kind of goals that he can actually influence and to which he can consider himself to have contributed. I don’t know if that’s any more or less aggravating than having no concern for “history” at all, but he seems to feel that the only real test of how he does his job is in things like multi-year consecutive win streaks and winning percentages over a long period, as well as winning Super Bowls in multiple years. A bad bounce here or there can get in the way of 19-0, and so it makes sense that he wouldn’t put much stock in single-season perfection but rather in sustained excellence. Personally, I think he’s right to value the long-term stuff, and that’s the reason we’ve got such a consistent winner in the Colts.
As fans, maybe we can accept having won one Super Bowl and look at 19-0 as the next accomplishment worth aiming for, but it seems wrong that we should forsake winning a championship when guys like Clint Session, Jerraud Powers, Jacob Lacey, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, etc. are still trying to get their first ring.

Owner Jim Irsay and brains
Hey Jim,
I played football and never owned a team. But I think with my brains and not my feelings. What you did was wrong and that is based on watching the game. It is also based on what fans think about it because they watched the game as well. Even if you intentionally lost the game to set up an easier game later you are still wrong and that has nothing to do with feelings or emotions. It has to do with being honest. That comes from wisdom not feelings.
Wow
This post is full of assumptions and condescension. Speak for yourself; you obviously don’t give a crap about my opinion.
I think
you and I are somewhat on the same page, Blueisgood.
Thanks
I think a lot of us Colts fans are on the same page. And we feel a lot better about the Buffalo game knowing we are not putting our starters at risk.
Amen.
If anyone here thinks that Peyton and the boys would not have been pulled in the Buffalo game if we were 15-0 is nuts.

Imagine the uproar under THOSE circumstances
when risk of injury is likely to be far greater
How can you not love a team that does this?
The Real Question
What I really want to know is if this really is the best strategy to win a super bowl. We have used this same strategy 3 or 4 different years and it never worked. We came out flat in the playoff games and didn’t get going until the 3rd quarter. The one year we had to play through all 16 games, we played 4 strong games and beat some good teams. It seems to disrupt the timing and kill some momentum.
Have you read this blog at all?
I’m not insulting you here, and I don’t want it to come across that way. But it’s been pointed out time after time after time that the downfall of the team in those games was due far more to injury of key players than anything else.
Great Post
We Colts fans sometimes forget what it is like to not have everything go our way. What happened sucked, and everyone has a right to (and SHOULD, at least to an extent) be upset about what happened last week. Polian is an arrogant man and is not very likeable, but the guy is a football mastermind. Remember you don’t have to like a guy to respect him. He may be a dick, but dicks get things done. We may not like him, but all respect him. For Polian he may feel the opposite, in that he likes, may even love, the fanbase, but doesn’t show us a lot of respect, especially when we question anything he does. Yet, who cares?
We are spending so much time this past week ripping on Polian and many are forecasting gloom and doom from here on out, but come on, now. Remember who we cheer for. When I scan the crowd at LOS on TV, I don’t see any Polian jerseys or signs. I don’t see him on the field making passes, tackles, blocks, runs, or catches. All this negative energy geared towards a guy who many feel wronged the fans and the players needs to shift into ardent support for the players and team. I assure you no one on that sideline dressed in pads is going to lay down just because of some criticism from the media and fanbase. They are a hard nosed group of guys, always have been, always will. Beating a dead horse and taking a bunch of shots at Polian he will never even know about is stupid and not healthy for a fan. Remember who is playing on the field, and remember that while they may have been disappointed, none of them are complaining. We still have the best team in football, and one controversial game does not change that.
We have members of the media basically saying the team will become deflated and get destroyed from here on out. Sure. I’m sure when the players here about all sports media calling them a bunch of pussies, basically, is going to make them forfeit the rest of the season. If anyone thinks this will NOT motivate the team, you’re wrong. I feel that we play better when we are media punching bags who get no respect than we do when we are the media darlings. Screw all of them. Sure, most of us agree with the criticism with how the game was handled, but we as fans are allowed to be upset because we love the team, unlike the media. I mean, it’s the same as saying, “Man, we suck,” and Tedi Bruschi going, “Yeah, I agree, you do suck.” I could care less about d-bags like him and their opinions.

The "letter" I wish I had written
Great job. The Colts stand out for their reputation of discipline, and last Sunday’s decision – though you may not like it – just goes along with that tradition. There are two arguable candidates for Team of The Decade (though the Colts, not the Pats, should win that argument!) and it just so happens they are also the most disciplined teams in the NFL. No coincidence. You don’t like Polian? Ask a Bill’s fan from way back whether they’d have him back. How many post-season appearances have they had after going to the SB 4 years in a row? Now they look like any other small-market team…I’d hate to see that happen to Indy. Go Colts and thanks Bill.

Gndefeated or not, go Colts!
What’s done is done. Whether one likes it or not, we won’t go 16-0!
However, what we can do is win the SB. And I know for sure that without healthy starters, this cannot be done. I don’t want to see my team so exhausted that we lose, again, to the chargers with Sproles gaining ~400 yards. Instead, I want healthy players to stop him, make big plays and go back to Miami to bring home the Lombardi trophy!
Go Colts, 16-0 or not, they are still the best team in the league.

If we had beaten the Jets, would you want eveyone playing in the snow at Buffalo?
While I, like many others, was livid after the Jets game, I realized then that it might snow the following week in Buffalo. I personally wouldn’t want my team out there, giving it their all for 16-0 in the snow. THAT really would be silly. It’s a lot easier to get hurt in the snow, and WE HAVE HOMEFIELD, which means…..we’ll not have to play in the snow in the playoffs at all. No need to play for “sharpness” in the snow.
AND…They say be careful what you wish for, but I’d MUCH rather see the Jets in the playoffs than the Steelers. Not because I give any craps about NY or the Jets, but the Steelers are potentially that good.
In retrospect, I think pulling the starters IN THE EXACT MANNER THAT IT WAS DONE, to allow individual record-setting, allow NY to win, eliminating the tough decision whether or not to play in the snow to win the last of 16-0, and saving our legs for the playoffs was exactly the right decision.
When we were all flipping out, we should have trusted the thinking of Colts management. They’re actually pretty good at what they do…in case we’ve forgotten.
Man Up!!
It is time for Bill Polian to man up! This is a man’s sport that is supposed to be run by men! Bill, you have done great things for this franchise and this team so it would be a shame for you to be remembered most for this one stupid act of carelessness.Man up and admit that you made a mistake and maybe this indescretion will be forgiven, never forgotten, but forgiven. If you were going to have a lapse of judgement, couldn’t you have waited until the Bills game instead of GIVING the game away at HOME?You are always supposed to protect your home turf! We all make mistakes so MAN UP and take responsibility for your actions! Individual stats still seem to matter so why not the team stats? This is a great team and you undermined this fact. This team could have been even greater if you would have let them! I guess that we now have to start calling you Coach Polian now. This is one fan who heartbroken and ashamed of your quitter attitude that was on display for the Jets Game
