Robert Mathis wins AFC Defensive Player of the Month

I don't make it a habit of linking to Mike Florio's ProFootballTalk. However, today I'll make an exception. A few moments ago, Florio broke the news that Colts defensive end Robert Mathis has been awarded AFC Defensive Player of the Month for November.

Defensive end Robert Mathis won the honors, via 16 tackles, two forced fumbles, one pass defensed, and 4.5 sacks in five November games.  Mathis had two sacks in the 35-34 win over the Patriots, and he forced a fumble via a sack to seal the recent come-from-behind win over the Texans.

Mathis will likely get a return trip to the Pro Bowl this year, along with his buddy on the other side of the defensive line, Dwight Freeney.

Over the past three years, Robert Mathis has quietly, and firmly, established himself as one of the best defensive ends in football. To have both him and Dwight Freeney on the same team is absolutely amazing. Both players are very, very special.

The Packers Charles Woodson won NFC Defensive Player of the Month.

This is awesome!

It’s nice to see Super Mathis get some love!
Congratulations to you!!!

Too bad he won’t be able to go to the Pro Bowl because he will be preparing for the Super Bowl!

I hope Freeney plays on Sunday,

So we can see a double spin move from Mathis and Freeney, sack VY, fumble, Brackett picks up the ball, SCORE 6.

Switch Brackett with Session

I’ve recently become a HUGE Clint Session fan (before the Houston game mind you).

Funny you should say that, I almost said Session.

How about they do it twice, once for Brackett and once for Session.

Hey!

I want Bullitt and Hayden to get it too! Make it four times. Or hell, just every time VY drops back.

I can see it now...

We score so many defensive TD’s that when our offense gets the ball Manning takes a knee 3 times and they punt just to give the ball back to the D to score points faster!

I like it.

Great to hear

Not that it’s an apples-to-apples comparison, but year over year Mathis has been a more productive end than Freeney. Some people have said Freeney has a shot at HoF; I dunno if that’s true but if it is then Mathis deserves consideration as well.

Freeney

is going to need to put up at least 3-4 more years of this type of production. A HoF DE is very much a numbers position. Gotta have the empirical data more than intangibles for a defensive lineman (usually).

Freeney > Mathis but Freeney > everyone

Freeney is the best DE in the league.

Mathis is definitely for of a “big play” guy than Freeney, but he definitely benefits more from playing opposite Freeney than the other way around.

I always say this...

But, way too much of Robert Mathis’ success is attributed to Dwight Freeney’s double teams. I’m glad to see him git this award.

Agreed. Mathis has been overlooked for a while now. Just recently have people in the media picked up on him.

Love the username btw. I’ve also come to love the ‘Freeney salute’.

Now this is excellent news

Mathis always seems to get lost in the shuffle outside of the Indianapolis press and fan base, but he’s a stud who deserves recognition. I’m glad to see this.
