Gerhart anybody?

Now I am not calling bust on Donald Brown at this point, to me the jury is still out on him.  To me, his blocking is suspect andhe looks like he may have a hard time staying healthy in this league.  I love his speed and playmaking ability, but there are some things about him that make me scared he will be a bust.

If Toby Gerhard is availiable in the late 1st or 2nd round, I think we should grab him.  He seems like a Brandon Jacobs type to me with a little more speed.  Also, his is an excellent student majoring in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford while carrying a 4.0 GPA. Sounds a lot like a certain Colts QB I know.

Bottom line, this guy is a beast and I would love to see him in the Speed Blue and White!  Discuss:

ehh I think Brown needs much more time

and I like how Simpson and especially Hart have looked.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

He's a great talent, but will probably go before we pick in the 1st rd

I think we are good at RB.

Plus I am still high on OL picks in, say, rounds 1-16.

But if we go DT, I propose Daniel Teo’Nesheim from Washington. A true Samoan beast who is likely to get bigger. All-time leading sacker at UW, and a run-stopper as well. When he went to HS in Hawaii he was a 5-8 135 lb kid who had never played before. His coaches concluded that he was the smallest Samoan any of them had ever seen and weren’t sure they had a need for him. He was about 250 by the time he graduated HS and has continued to get bigger, but is not fat by any means. Fast and smart and constantly pushing. Because he’s in the media-unfriendly Pacific NW and played on a truly awful 0-12 squad last year, I assume his draft stock is highly dependent on the combine. Might slip into the first rd, might slip into the 3rd, but late 2nd feels about right to me.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

He’s gotta average 329 yds over the last four games to hit 5000. i guess it’s possible, but not likely since he won’t play the full game in weeks 16 and 17.

He is so very unlikely to ever nab any cumulative season records again

for that reason. Hey, if we’re playing for our playoff lives and our D is weak some year, all bets are off. But as things stand, we tend to rest our guys.

Now Caldwell may be different, but even playing full time for 16, averaging 329 for four games is a tall order. I don’t think he quite hit that average in his best 4-game streak earlier this year when he was “off the charts.”

Actually, I EXPECT Caldwell to be a bit different. Rather than play one series in the finale, I expect at least a full quarter andmaybe a full half to keep things sharp at game speed—especially if we’re bringing Gonzo back. Nicked guys will rest as much as possible (Freeney out last week, Mathis this one) but if 18 is healthy and obstinate in wanting to play, I think there is some benefit in getting him in for four series or so.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

I think...

Brown has been better than average in blitz pickup, especially with all the requirements of being a Colts running back. He has ALREADY added a dimension to our O that we haven’t had in a few years. He no where near bust status. We require a great deal of our RBs in this offense and Brown has stepped up to the challenge. I think it was after Week 4 this year when Brown started being in for 4th quarter series’ and playing great.

As for Gerhart, he’s a great college player and should be a very good pro as well. I doubt that Pollian will go RB in the 1st round again. I think Gerhart will be gone by the second for sure. I’m always wrong when it comes to Pollian’s draft strategy, but I see OL as a more pressing need. Just my opinion though.

I agree that

Brown is a good back and I am not ready to call him a bust, the injuries are just making me nervious. I really do think we need OL in the 1st round, but if TG is available in the 2nd, we need to take him by virtue of the best player available philosphy. He would give us a truly big back and we wouldnt have to use Foster or an LB to block on short yardage…I hate when we do that…it hasnt worked since we put Kleko in during our SB run.

Besides

Like someone else said above, theres no way Gerhart is on the board even late in the 1st round, let alone the 2nd round.

by UnofficialPants on Dec 7, 2009 12:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Actually

Most draft predictions have TG going in the 2nd or 3rd, however, this is pre-combine so it does not mean squat. Now once again, because this is pre combine, this may be meaningless, but what do you guys think about Mike Iupati out of Idaho – 6’6 330 Guard as our first rounder?

I know we may have to go tackle if DeVan keeps it up, but I like the idea of having this monster on the line!

by GuruBlue on Dec 7, 2009 2:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Iupati wouldn’t be bad, but 1st round is usually a little high for a guard. There should be good talent available at tackle even at the end of the first round. Anthony Davis from Rutgers would be my preference.

I agree, Gerhart will be there long past our first round pick and probably beyond our 2nd round pick. I like him and think he we be a solid player in the NFL, but the Colts already have two strong RBs on the roster.

I also find it ironic that the argument was made to get a guy like Brandon Jacobs because Brown can’t stay healthy…

Gone

This guy will not be around by the time we pick in the 1st round. Gerhart will probably go mid first round.

It is way too early to make a call on Brown. Although, great point about him being injury prone. Remember, a running back that cannot stay healthy is worthless.

Nah....

Brown has played sparingly due to injuries, but when he’s in, he has played well and still has a huge ceiling for improvement. He has big play ability, and will be valuable spelling Addai, and maybe at some point next yr, splitting carries. It is a big shame he has missed the games he has had. Rookie year is the year to get accustomed to the game and make the transition. Brown is still a bit behind due to his lack of game experience, but still has time and the work ethic to show he’s a playmaker. Even still, Addai has been playing great and the duo of Simpson and Hart have been effective in Brown’s absence. Plus, Gerhart will be gone anyway by the time we draft.

One guy I would LOVE to get is Rolando McClain. I have heard the guy does nothing but study film and work to improve himself, and is known as a great teammate and leader. This is a guy we would likely have to trade up for, though, but with the likely departure of Brackett, he would be a huge get. Unlikely we would trade up, but you never know.

"A lot of times, Kenny, we have no idea what we're doing. But the DEFENSE doesn't know that we don't know what we're doing.....and that's next level." -Peyton Manning
