What is/are the main
cause/causes of the recent slide from the land of the unbeatens?
"I am in favor of censorship ‐ not against what is supposed to be sexy or dirty, but against what is idiotic." -Jean Renoir
Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak.
Three easy answers to that
1. The biggest pain we had during our slide was Orton getting injured. It was very clear that Simms is not ready to lead a team to a win in the NFL…the game looked much too fast for him which spells doom to any team.
2. Line play. Both sides during our slide looked overpowered against the Ravens and Steelers. We were pushed around and it disrupted our offense heavily.
3. Offensive disruption. Our defenses just wore down towards the end of games…they actually were playing pretty good through the first three quarters most (if not all) of the games we lost, but then fell apart in the 4th quarter.

Cmon J-man!
You are torn!? What? Seriously guy…fan up and back your team man. I definitely agree that the Colts are one of the best run teams in the NFL, but that stuff should never come between you and our beloved Broncos!

j-man has written here before and we all jumped on his writing, then learned of his conditions. give him a quick break on this one…
How can you not love a team that does this?
One Sentence?
Without punctuation, everything runs together. At a minimum, you need to use periods.

It doesn't have to do with respect for Indy, or being in their house
I’m talking about you being torn between wanting Indy to have a perfect season and us winning. I respect all of our opponents (well…some raider fans anyway), but someone else having a perfect season would NEVER come anywhere close to me wanting Denver to win.
Do your thing man…no big deal to me, just calling it how I see it.

I agree that it would be very hard to beat them twice. It will take our best football to beat the Colts…even just this week.

first, J-man thank you for the Colts compliments
I read somewhere you were wrongly banned from the sbnation blogs but they fixed it and obviously youre back ,and im glad you are , you are a true football fan and an antonym of a homer you respect this game and people no matter whos fan should respect you.
Now back to this game, how is your OL doing ? do you have many important injuries on that front? do you expect to contain and will your QB be able to handle the Colts pass rush?
nice q
thanks suzzi o-line is doing better since den beached hamiton for hositcian we will run a quick passing game and run the ball a lot we will try keep away we have 2 very good rb’s rem the ne and mia games this is what we will try and do

Yes he was. It was a fluke.
He was posting at all the blogs on the SBNation site because he is a broncos fan first and a sports fan second. So, he got a throttling violation for being too devoted and commenting/posting too fast. It all got worked out though. It happens, but that’s the price you pay for being an ambassador of the blogosphere.

O Line injuries
The only O Line injury is our RT Ryan Harris is out for the year. That definitely hurts because he is a stud, but his backup, Tyler Polumbus has been playing very well in his place.
Like J man said our line is much better now that Hochstein has replaced Hamilton at LG.
I expect the Broncos line to hold up very well against the Colts pass rush. Clady is the best LT in the league IMO and Polumbus is playing very solid too. Our RG Kuper is very underrated. The times we have had pressure it has come from the A gaps, but that was a problem which seems to have been fixed since Hamilton was benched.

If there is, he won't show it.
Now that you mention it, that may have been a reason for his redzone pick that he threw off of his back foot. His injury is on his left foot, so he puts weight on it when he follows through. That throw may have been because of the pressure or it may be because of foot pain. I’m not sure because I am not in the locker room. If it is affecting him on the field, it still isn’t too bad. He played well on turkey day and this past sunday.
I do know that If he feels good enough to play and isn’t on the injury report, he isn’t going to tell anybody in the media that he is hurting. If he can play, he will. Simms is atrocious, so there won’t be a QB controversy. Orton is the guy and that’s who you’ll see.
Honestly, I don’t think that Orton will be forced to fling it around the yard on sunday. You’ll see a similar game plan as last week against the chiefs. Run, run, run and then throw every once in a while to keep the defense off balance.

How is Denver's secondary?
Nice, general question. Approach it any way you wish.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak.
Opportunistic. Repressive. Cohesive. Experienced. Intelligent.
Pick from those. lol. I am very pleased with this secondary. Champ Bailey and Dawkins are two potential hall of famers and Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman are extremely underrated. Last week against the chiefs, for example, Goodman had a pick and a fumble recovery for a TD, while Hill made a critical pass deflection on a trick play.
They are second in the league behind the Saints in passing yards allowed and tied for second in the league for passing TDs allowed (saints 7, bills 10 and broncos 10).
The broncos secondary is allowing the front seven to get great pressure on the quarterback and are partially responsible for Doom’s ridiculous 15 sack total so far this season.
The only thing that may be a problem is Dawkins. He has had neck troubles lately. Hopefully, he can be healthy enough to play throughout the game on sunday.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

nice answer
i have the feeling you will see a heavy dose of Dallas Clark and Addai. That should open things up for collie/wayne/garcon after adjustments.
You're right.
The one thing I’m a little worried about are passes underneath and over the middle. Our secondary doesn’t worry me, much. They will hold up against the colts passing offense. The linebackers concern me a little bit. Ty Law has been great as our nickel corner, too. So, I’m not overly concerned about your wide receivers. The TE and runningback could have a big day, though. Dumervil or Ayers might be lined up with Clark or Addai and that doesn’t make me feel very good.
Of course, you guys still have Clark. He was a bronco killer back in 03 and 04 and he will continue to give me nightmares. Fortunately, we took Stokely from you. That guy gave us fits.
I don’t believe that you guys will see a 40 or 50 point game like you did against the former broncos. This ain’t your daddy’s broncos. These guys play as a unit and are very dangerous if they have a lead. Don’t expect to climb back in the game if you are down like the Miami game.
That said, you guys will do the exact same thing. If you get up by 10 points or so, it will be a long day for the broncos.
This game may be decided on the opening coin flip. Whoever scores first has a huge advantage, in my opinion, because both defenses are lights out when they have a lead.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Girl, you don't need to be a 10, as long as you have a good smile and smell like bacon.

haha, he's actually playing really well.
He isn’t a great number one CB, but in Denver, he doesn’t have to be. He’s doing a great job covering the #3 receiver. We haven’t heard his name called too many times since we signed him a few weeks ago, which is good news for a CB. It means they are doing their job and their man isn’t getting open.
I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. We tore him up in KC, where he was forced into being a go-to guy on defense. He is only brought in for nickel packages in Denver and is doing a great job.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Josh Barrett
I suspect we will see more of Barrett on Sunday. He’s a backup Safety and ST player who has primarily only been used on D locked up against premier TE’s. He’s had success this year shutting down Gates and Witten.

1) Can you give me some background on your LBs? I haven’t played madden since like 06’ and all I remember is that the Broncos had like 3 LB who were ridiculously fast. But, I think you’ve revamped the defense quite a bit since then.
2) Why did you get rid of Coyer? I mean Ron Meeks (our former DC) was pretty bad, but Coyer has been excellent for us.
3) What are the three reasons why you hate the chargers the most?
[mine = 1) LT (you are not batman, take off the visor) 2) Rivers (stop yelling and play football) 3) Shawn “injection up” merriman.
I'll try and help, here. There are probably people that can go more in depth on these, but I'll go for a quick run through. Great questions by the way.
1) Well, let’s start with DJ, who has been with the broncos for a while. He is fast. He can go sideline to sideline. We have had him at every LB position since he has been on the team. He puts up huge tackling numbers every year. However, sometimes he overpursues and misses his assignment. Mario Haggan was brought in to be a run stuffer. He has done a great job. He is much faster than I thought he was going to be. Andra Davis is a guy that I was very skeptical about when he was brought in from Cleveland. He was good at stopping the run, but I didn’t see him as a great player that demands to be game planned against. He isn’t a dynamic player that will make sportscenter’s top ten, but he does a great job and can definitely play some ball and take down RBs in the backfield.
Robert Ayers is a rookie and he has been a quiet presence, so far. He did return a fumble for a TD in the Steelers game, but his presence is mostly behind the scenes, taking on blockers and allowing guys to get free around him.
Which brings me to Elvis “Doom” Dumervil. What can you say about him? He is short, has long arms and gets great leverage. He is a QB nightmare. He definitely benefits from the pressure caused by the rest of the defensive line and LBs. If you don’t find Doom, he will find you.
2) To answer your question as simply as possible, Coyer was a scapegoat for a bad defense. He had no real players to work with in his scheme and was kicked to the curb along with most of his defensive starters. Bad drafts and poor free agent decisions left the broncos with players like Nate Webster, Marlon McCree, Marquan Manuel, etc. I think Coyer might have been able to make it happen if he was given a better pool of players to work with. However, we can speculate all day. The bottom line is, the broncos defense was terrible. They cleaned house and look where they ended up. I’m really glad he found a niche in Indy, though. He’s a good guy and that atrocious defense couldn’t have been all his fault.
3) Wow, there are so many reasons to hate the chargers. LT, Rivers, Merriman, Philips are all great reasons to hate them. I’m going to go off the cuff here, though. The thing that makes me hate the chargers most, personally, is the fans. They have the absolute worst fans of all time, in my opinion. There may be other broncos fans that disagree and they are welcome to post here and state their case, but for the most part, the chargers fans are the most disrespectful, least loyal, and big headed fans I have ever come into contact with.
Sure, LT crying when someone did the lights out dance is a good reason to hate them. Philips talking smack to McD before the game and then crying to the media, saying that McD claimed he “owned the chargers”, is a great reason to hate the chargers. Rivers big “grit eating” jaw and Merriman’s roid rage induced arm slapping dance are good reasons to hate the chargers.
The fans, though, are ridiculous. Not only have the chargers not won the superbowl, the fans talk enough smack to make you think that they have won the last five. However, despite that tough guy bravado, they can barely sell out their own stadium because they really don’t care about the chargers. I am sure that there are more chargers fans that spend more time talking smack than watching football.
Not to mention that Barrelman was almost pushed down the stadium steps at a charger game. If you can’t be respectful to one of the nicest men to ever grace a football stadium with his presence, then you are a terrible person.
Well, that’s my take. Sorry for going on and on, but talking chargers just makes my blood boil.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Girl, you don't need to be a 10, as long as you have a good smile and smell like bacon.
Excellent answer! Thanks kentuckybronco.
I’m fine with chargers ranting. I feel that we have to enjoy these opportunities. I have never met a SD fan in person, they are hard to find in NY, but I believe you. I just read some stories about barrelman passing away and that is unbelievable that they acted that way toward him. I feel like most teams have players that fall into one of three categories: 1) irrelevant 2) likable 3) so talented that you respect them even if you don’t like them. None of the chargers fit into any of those three categories, which I think explains why I dislike them so much.
For example, as much as I can’t stand the Pats, I respect Brady and I respect Moss as a football player. Hell, I even respect the hell out of Kevin Faulk, the man is ordinarily a 1st down machine who plays the game the right way. But, there is NO one on the chargers who I can name that I respect because of the way they play the game or whose personality I like despite their lack of talent.
Exactly sandsnake. If they don't have any respect, I'll give none of mine.
There is nothing good about a person who wears powder blue. Maybe it’s the color that makes them feel that they have to be jerks? I’m not sure, but something…….. nay, everything about them makes me glad that I am not associated with the chargers, in any way, shape or form. The fact that we play them twice a year is a bummer, because I’d rather play against any other team twice a year just so I wouldn’t have to endure watching that team.
The AFC West is a bummer of a division, in my opinion. SD and Oakland??? I can’t stand either team. The chiefs are okay, because at least I can respect them and they have nice fans. It’s still a rivalry vs KC, but at least a respectful one. I have no love for SD or Oakland, though.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Girl, you don't need to be a 10, as long as you have a good smile and smell like bacon.
I do have serious respect
for Sproles, that annoying little pinball. I can’t think of anyone else that I respect on the Chargers though.

How has former Colts Darrell Reid been playing for you all? Is he still a special teams ace or has he broke into the rotation at all like was originally thought??
by True Blue Colts on Dec 7, 2009 11:10 PM EST reply actions
Reid = solid pick up
Reid has been regularly in the rotation of our defense. His name hasn’t lit up special teams, but that’s probably because we have a few guys that are stand-outs there (Bruton, Larson, etc). I loved the pick-up when we got him and I’m very happy that we have him in case a LB goes down.

transfering a Q
well let me ask a question and give my view on how i expect the Colts to play on sunday.
Who will cover Dallas Clark? How do you expect to fare with the fastest no-huddle offense in the nfl?
My view on this game:
I expect the Colts to play a game like we did against the 49ners but with a better more tuned offense , expect Dallas Clark and Joseph Addai (as a receiver) to have a big day off the fast pace of the no-huddle quick slants and screen and short passes our running stats dont show the whole story we use the run when we need to and use the short pass to our RB as a method of running(not show on rushing stats).
Your Team have a great defense and great defenses often feed and are great because of smart and clever situational substitutions, the way the Colts deal with this kind of great defenses is a super fast no-huddle that is proven to crack open many good defenses.
As i said on offense i expect the pace of our game against the 49ners but with a more developed WR corp , we had too many drops from our young guns in that game, they have matured on the last weeks and are doing a better job now.
On defense im going to tell you our defense is really underrated , those guys are hunters, ball hawking LBs and DBs see our last couple of games clutch plays from LBs and DBs not to mention our pass rush, this unit have won us the games our offense had struggle with , im very impressed with their level of play and of course what Larry Coyer have been able to do with what we have and all the injuries we have been dealing with, i expect the defense to play hard it seems sometimes theyre the ones really wanting to win it all.
Thats my opinion im not saying we will win , i think it will be a hard and epic battle between two of the best teams in the NFL if the Colts play to win (one must consider if the coaches will start resting players) , it may go to which ever team has the ball last.
Good Luck!
i asked this same question and never got an awnser over there mabye we can now get there awnser on how theywill cover Dallas Clark

Josh Barrett may be covering him
He is a backup safety who has had success this year locked up against Witten as well as against Gates. If not Barrett than I suspect it will be Woodyard who replaces Davis at ILB on passing downs. I can also guarantee that if CLark is targeted, Dawkins will be right there for a big hit. That guy seems to be where ever the ball goes on almost every play.

idk i dont see that you really locked gates down seems they just didn't give him the ball much as is usual
although seems your Dawkins was able to limit the damage up the middle by gates after the carry. so i would think dallas should get his catches just a matter of his YAC

Didn't get the ball to him as much as usual
That’s what lock down means. If he’s covered, he’s not going to be targeted (unless your QB is Jay Cutler).

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak.

Have a couple Broncos questions unrelated to this week’s game:
1. What’s your most defining Broncos moment? Say you had to show someone in one play what Denver was all about what would you pick?
2. This is much easier: Who’s the best QB of the 80s? Moon/Marino/Montana/Kelly/Elway/Steve Grogan? (Why am I ask of course Steve Grogan was the best? :) )
And for questions related to the game Sunday.
1. What’s the most underrated part of Denver’s team? I know Colts fans think our defense gets undeservedly disrespected and I think the running game is unfairly maligned? Is there a part of the Broncos you think is better then some fans, the local or national media thinks?
Thanks for the insight.
j-man gave his answers below but I'll respond as well
1. Most defining moment would be Elway raising his 1st Lombardi Trophy after finally winning a SB. Most defining play would be Elway’s helicopter play in that same SB when he dove for the 1st down and got hit by 2 Packers spinning him around in the air. That play showed just how much Elway wanted to win and to see him at that age give his all that game was a thing of beauty. An honorary mention has to go to Atwater’s hit on Okoye.
2. This one is easy. Elway is The Greatest Ever.
3. I would say Kyle Orton is the most underrated part of the 2009 Broncos. He gets no love from the media but he is a winner. His decision making is excellent and despite what the many haters will say, he has the physical ability and can make all of the throws. His decision making is his best attribute though. If we still had Cutler there is no way we would be close to 8-4 right now.

Thank you both for the answers.
Since you mentioned Mile High it sparked another question. I saw an NFL countdown on top 10 home field advantages and Mile High made the list. I guess some people think the new stadium doesn’t provide the same home field advantage. Is that something Broncos fans think? I know Redskins fans don’t compare the new stadium’s “home field advantage” favorably to RFK. Just wondered where you all stood.

There is definitely something to that.
I think that a lot of people are “Mile High Purists”. They won’t even call the new stadium “Mile High Stadium”. Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium just sounds…….. wrong.
Anyways, back to the question. The new stadium doesn’t even compare to the old Mile High. The old stadium had character. It would sway a little bit when the crowd stomped its feet and it was deafeningly loud. The new stadium feels like it has been built more for the corporate suites instead of the screaming orange and blue bronco fans. It is a beautiful place to watch a football game, don’t get me wrong. It just doesn’t have the same character as the old stadium, in my opinion.
I remember as a kid being at the old Mile High and I couldn’t even hear my dad trying to talk to me. It was awesome. The new stadium feels stagnant, compared to the old one, at least when I went to it last year.
So, I hope that answers your question. It is still probably difficult for road teams to come in and play because of the altitude, though. It isn’t nearly as loud as the old Mile High, though.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
