Draft I Would Like/Draft I Think We Could Get

The subject of this post spells it out for the most part.  Below I will put up my "Mock Draft" (funny cause my last name is Mock... so I really mean it ;)  On the left side of each round is who I would like to see us pick up... on the right side is who I think we could end up drafting.  Trying to figure this out is really absurd but I don't care about the Super Bowl and am already itching for the new season so hopefully this can spur some positive forward-looking discussion about our 2009 Colts.

Round 1:

RB - Knowshon Moreno - Georgia/RB - LeSean McCoy - Pitt

BPA Round - Passing up on one of these two RBs, should they be availabe, will be very difficult.  Unless Addai has a coming out party this year (not sure hoping for that is wise), we need to be searching for a replacement 1RB.  Hopefully, out of our stock of current RBs, we have a group that will present a strong running game now and even more into the future.

Round 2:

DT - Ron Brace - BC/WR - Derrick Williams - Penn State

In this round grabbing Brace at DT would be awesome but if there is an early run on DTs and Brace drops off of the board, I honestly think the best value pick for our needs would be Derrick Williams.  I could see us grabbing him here.

Round 3:

LB - Zack Follett - Cal/S/LB - Nic Harris - Oklahoma

I would be happy with either pick to be honest but I think one of Follett or Harris will likely be available, if not both.  With Follett's reputation as a quick, strong LB who lays bricks and Harris a speedy smallish LB prospect who has a known reputation for stopping the run and the range to defend against the pass... it would be a good time to grab these guys before they are off of the board.

Round 4:

LB - Jason Phillips - TCU/OT - Alex Boone - Ohio State

Honestly, if we picked up Boone to increase our OT depth, that would be great.  However, picking up Phillips and Follett, in my opinion, presents an opportunity to solidify the LB position for the next three-four years.  It would put the Colts in a strong position to let Hagler/Keiaho/Brackett go in the near future while Wheeler and others in camp will potentially offer strong depth at the position.

Round 5:

CB - Morgan Trent - Michigan/DT - Alex Magee - Purdue

If the draft goes how I would like to see it go, picking up Morgan Trent in round 5 would be great if he's still available.  If the draft goes as I could see it going, we might be picking up our bigger DT in Rd. 5 if Alex Magee drops this far.

Round 6:

OT - Robert Brewster - Ball State/CB - Glover Quin - New Mexico

Picking up Robert Brewster would give us an OT known for his pass blocking abilities.  We know that we scouted BSU this year and Brewster is a guy that may fall down this far in the draft.  Though OT is the second greatest need on the team in my opinion, getting the most value out of a draft is our goal.  Grabbing Brewster to push Ryam Diem at RT may be a good plan... he would compliment Federkeil as well who I think could push on Ugoh for the LT spot.  Assuming OT has been addressed earlier in the draft with Boone, Glover Quin would be a solid DB pick-up here to address the uncertainty revolving Hayden's contract, Jackson's future with the team, Jennings/Hughes/Foster/Ratliff's development.  A good value pick.

Round 7:

WR - Deon Butler - Penn State/DT - Nader Abdallah - Ohio State

Deon Butler is a player I failed to mention in my other post but should be a sleeper pick for people to keep an eye on.  At Penn State he actually led the team in receiving, partially because Williams pulled triple duty by running the ball and playing special teams.  However, Butler is quick, in the 4.4 sec. 40 yard dash range and has been a playmaker since his Freshman year.  Picking him up here could be a great value pick to address a potential question mark at WR.  Picking Nader Abadallah out of Ohio State would make sense in the draft I could see happening because getting Alex Magee in the fifth round is a bit more of a question mark in terms of immediatley filling our need at DT than the pick of Brace would be in the draft I would like to see happen.  With his size 6'3", 310 lbs coming out of a Big 10 school, I could see the value in grabbing him before letting him become a UFA.

My draft:

RB - Knowshon Moreno
DT - Ron Brace
LB - Zack Follett
LB - Jason Phillips
CB - Morgan Trent
OT - Robert Brewster
WR - Deon Butler

Maybe a more realistic draft?

RB - LeSean McCoy
WR - Derrick Williams
S/LB - Nic Harris
OT - Alex Boone
DT - Alex Magee
CB - Glover Quin
DT - Nader Abdallah

Now I am guessing that you all will want to know a bit more about the players I could see us getting in the draft.  It's unrealistic and extremely time-consuming if I were going to try to put together a "full report" of the previous draft "who we might be interested in" list but this one I can probably handle.  I hope you enjoy the links and video that I could find for each player.

My Mock

1. Peria Jerry (please – that DT that we really need), if not, Percy Harvin (that deep threat WR and special teams ace), if not, trade down.
2. Derrick Williams (if no Harvin, get someone close to his skillset), or Ron Brace (if no Jerry)
3. Nic Harris
3. (Jake Scott) – Jason Phillips (we do get a pick, right?)
4. Augustus Parrish (give Olineman)
5. Best available QB (probably Harrell or Wilson) just in case.
6. Tony Fiammetta (fullback who excels at run-blocking
7. Alex Fletcher (Oline from Stanford, must be smart)

Compensatory pick for Jake Scott

Is most likely a 5th round pick, with an outside chance at a 4th round pick.

Absolutely no way for a 3rd round pick however.

by project geo on Feb 1, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

Not true

There’s a chance it’s a 3rd round. He was a pro bowl alternate, went 13-3, made the divisional round, one of the best O-lines in the league, and a 5.8 million dollar salary. This was one guys prediction last year based off salary etc..

THIRD ROUND
Washington (Derrick Dockery, $7 million per season, 16 GP/16 GS)
Cincinnati (Eric Steinbach, $6.971 million, 16/16)
Baltimore (Adalius Thomas, $6.9 million, 16/15)

FOURTH ROUND
Buffalo (Mike Gandy, $4.667 million, 16/16)
Baltimore (Tony Pashos, $4.7 million, 15/15)
Philadelphia (Donte Stallworth, $5.083 million, 16/9)
Green Bay (Ahman Green, $5.6 million, 6/5)
Tennessee (Drew Bennett, $5 million, 14/1) – possibly a fifth- round pick
San Diego (Donnie Edwards, $4.5 million, 16/16) – possibly a fifth- round pick

Based off that, and the fact that the only two standout FAs were Turner and Samuels, it’s definitely within reason to expect a 4th round with an outside shot at a 3rd round. The 5th round would be the low end. We might even get one for Utecht, possibly even a 6th rounder. It’s definitely within reason.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

Oh, and those predictions were almost 100% accurate.

Setting the record straight

1. Jake Scott signed a 4-year/19.5M deal. That’s a 4.875M average.

2. I did a little legwork a couple months ago, but as far as I’m aware, all of the following free agent signees (with contract averages included) are accountable towards compensatory picks:

New England/ Asante Samuel (9)
Pittsburgh Steelers/ Alan Faneca (8)
Cincinnati/ Justin Smith (7.5)
Arizona/ Calvin Pace (7)
Chicago/ Bernard Berrian (7)
New York Giants/ Gibril Wilson (6.5)
San Diego Chargers/ Michael Turner (5.75)
Tennessee Titans/ Antwan Odom (5.9)
Detroit Lions/ Damien Woody (5.1)
Colts/ Jake Scott (4.875)

If I forgot someone, apologies.

There’s no way on Earth that Scott will garner a 3rd round compensatory pick, with the top tier being so many dollars above him. It’s ridiculous and devoid of reason. If we’re lucky, he gets the last of the 4th round compensatory picks. Otherwise, one of the first 5th round compensatory picks is the reward.

3. There is no compensatory pick for Ben Utecht, at all. He was a restricted free agent who signed the offer sheet of another team, and the specific RFA tender offered to him by the Colts delivered no compensation.

You ignore the fact

That it’s not strictly based on salary. Performance has quite a bit to do with it. If you know the exact formula they use to figure out compensatory picks, please, let me know.

Salary is the biggest factor by far

Average salary leads by a mile. A distant second comes games played/started. And third comes performance. The last two might move a player up or down a few spots in their monetary tier.

A player can’t jump two tiers because he played well.

Just to update you guys

We get like 2 additional late draft picks for trading Luke Lawton and Dan Klecko at the begining of the season.

Nate Davis = beast, God I hope he doesn't go to Detriot.......

I don't think they do

Klecko left in free agency and Lawton didn’t make the final roster, so no pick for him

The fact that he didn't make the team

Doesn’t mean they don’t owe us a pick. Unless it was a stipulation in the contract. I’ve been looking up to see if I can find anything about it but I haven’t yet except for blog chatter. You have a source for that?

the 3rd link is the only place that gave terms for the Lawton Deal

they said 7th if he makes the roster, nothing if he doesn’t.

Meant to add, I think the only way they can be 100% clear for owing a conditional pick is if he failed a physical. You can’t just change your mind after a trade to avoid owing someone a pick. And Klecko will factor into the balance on compensatory picks

I’m looking at our UFAs signed by other teams right now:

Kory Chapman – Browns, $376,720
Dan Klecko – Eagles – $ 605,000 $ 0 $ 10,036,720 $ 10,641,720 $ 10,651,720 DT
Jake Scott – Titans $ 1,000,000 $ 4,000,000 $ 2,005,520 $ 7,005,520 $ 4,005,520 OL
Jeff Charleston – Saints – $460K
Rocky Boiman – Eagles – $771,720

I’m not exactly sure if they do it by cap hit for that year or overall salary, I’d think ti’d be overall. And holy crap, someone see if they can find something accurate on Klecko. This can’t be right. I mean, it’s cool if it is because it definitely is a big help to us, but for some reason I don’t think the Eagles are paying him 605,000 per year and have a 10.03 million bonus. That’d put him at 4,958,580.

It’s from the USA database and it looks correct when factoring in Colts players, I’m not sure if the Eagles are smoking crack or if it’s a typo.

Right

And where’s your source? Just call it an annoying habit, but I like to read things myself.

And that’s the only place I saw the details of the Lawton contract. It’s still listed on more sites than not that they still owe us a pick.

if you google "Dan Klecko Signing"

you’ll get a stack of links saying it’s a 2 year deal on the four that your link had. Rotoworld has the 800K for next season, but they don’t list this past seasons hit. I found someplace with both years, but I forget where. I think it was off a “Dan Klecko Contract” search.

Yeah, that's what I was doing

Kept finding the 600-800k range, but I can’t figure out why they keep listing a 10 million dollar signing bonus. And people noticed it awhile ago but USA today hasn’t changed it. And the eaglescap.net or whatever lists it as part of his contract.

Ohhhhh

Yeah, I heard about the Patriots doing this alot. That bonus is the LTBE. They had free space and had to account for it. They say the Patriots do it all the time to circumvent the salary cap issue.

I guess the main question

Is does that loophole go into salary for compensatory picks or do they get away with it hands clean? Too bad they keep it a secret.

Jake Scott is the only FA who will count in comp picks

The rest have salaries that aren’t big enough to factor in, plus you can include the Colts signing Dom Rhodes as well because of his salary.

by project geo on Feb 2, 2009 4:09 PM EST reply actions

That's not 100% true

“It is possible for a team to get a compensatory pick even if it doesn’t suffer a net loss of qualifying free agents. That type of comp picks come at the end of the seventh round, after the normal comp picks and before the non-compensatory picks that are added if fewer than 32 comp picks are awarded. There have been 12 of these "net value" type of comp picks awarded, and in each case, the combined value of the free agents lost was significantly higher than the combined value of the free agents signed.”

And as for salary and the free agents; the only people that know the actual salary that will count towards this are the NFL, Players Association, Team, and Player. Just take Adalius Thomas for example. His salary is :

"• Signing bonus: $12 million in 2007.

• Option bonus: $8 million payable in 2008, applied for cap reasons in equal $2 million increments in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

• Salaries: $900,000 in ’07, $900,000 in ’08, $1.9 million in ’09, $4.9 million in ’10 and $5.9 million in ’11.

• Workout bonuses: $107,000 annually if he participates in the Patriots’ offseason workout program in Foxboro.

• Cap numbers: In succession, beginning this year, $3.4 million, $5.4 million, $6.4 million, $9.4 million, $10.4 million."

The only numbers reported on Scott were his signing bonus and his salary. Everything else was “undisclosed”. And if you look at just the numbers from Thomas signing bonus and salary, it totals 26.5 million and 5.3 million per year. When in fact, his salary breaks down to ~ 7 million per year. But that was only after it was broken down. If Scott has incentives that he’s reached, his salary number will go up, unless the 4.875 salary is already including his incentives, which I doubt.

Do you know the breakdown of all the Free Agents contracts? If so, I’d like to know where that’s at. It’d be useful. And all I know is that the details of Scott’s contract were “undisclosed”. Meaning, he could be loaded with incentives that we don’t even know about.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
