Edgerrin James

Will probably be released by the Cardinals soon.

Has expressed fondness towards Indianapolis (gloated about the system, but didn't really mention returning)

Quotes:

"That’d be the easiest offense to play for," James said. "Indy’s always a team that makes sense. It’d be like one of those R&B groups when one member leaves and then comes back after a few years, and it’s like he never left."

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AnFCeIenbaHILrtHRr0JYaxDubYF?slug=ms-jameswantsout02809&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Also from the article:

However, James said finding an organization committed to winning, and one which features an offense in which he could excel, would be the biggest considerations in his decision.

Without directly saying, I think he would love coming back to Indy.  I doubt money would be a huge issue for him, neither would relationships. And maybe he feels like he owes the Colts for the ring (although his play before was enough).

The one issue is playing time and splitting it with Addai and maybe Hart.  Edge seems professional, though, and a solution shouldn't be too difficult.

If he does express interest, should the Colts do the same?  Can he productive?  At what cost?  Do the Colts have the money?

For me, it's:

Yes they should try to get him back.  Yes, he can be productive, was good in the playoffs and before last year was a 1,000+ yd back.  He probably won't expect more than the $5 million he's walking away from, and probably quite a bit less.  I doubt there'll be too much interest in him, anyway.  He's pretty much like another Fred Taylor, but with more love from the Colts team and fanbase.  Colts do have more important things to spend money on, Hayden, Saturday, maybe a punter, etc., but I think they should be able to make room for this guy.

Edge, come back!!

I mean, i would love that, would love to see #32 on the field again with Manning and also with Marv too. I think there’s a chance for him to come back, lets hope Polian at least sits with Edge to talk about it…

I just don’t see this happening. If they wanted Edge back, they should have never let him go in the first place. All he did while in Arizona is get older. Nothing good would come of this in my opinion, and I love me some Edge.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

So...

Are you saying you wouldnt like him back or that you do like edge, but the colts simply wont bring him back?

I'm sure they would have liked him back in 06

just not for the price tag he was carrying. The tag is probably a bit lower now.

He was my favorite player for about 1 year. I didn’t really pay much attention to football or the Colts until what would turn out to be Edge’s last year. I have/had a hard time having my favorite player not play for my favorite team, so I switched to Addai and Peyton.

By the way, Edgerrin is a sick name. Edgerrin and D’Brickashaw are probably my two favorite names in football. And Nnamdi and Amobi.

They probably did want Edge, just not anywhere near that price tag. I don’t think that’s an issue anymore.

Definetly

But still, its highly unprobable that the Colts will try free agency

I would love for him to come back for a year or two.

We’re not sure about how Hart will do after his surgery. Addai needs help. And, is Dom coming back, I don’t know.

I prefer Edge’s style over Addai’s. The dancing in the backfield nearly drove me nuts last season. He just couldn’t hit the few holes that there were.

I’m sure Edge would come back for a lot less money. In this interview and the one from the Pro Bowl he was very clear about wanting to win a SB. His priorities have changed since 2006.

I must of missed this somewhere but...

what about Rhodes? I know that he had a one year deal and he wasn’t extremely productive, but any rumors about him resigning?

Unless Edge

decides to take very little money to come back, I don’t see the Colts spending all that much on another RB (not that we don’t necessarily need it), especially after the Hayden contract, and the Marvin and Saturday situations still looming and all. I would love to see him back, but don’t see it happening.

Weather out here is SWEET! NICE!

Edge, years and dollars

Colteyes, I agree.

Is it possible that everything said above is pretty much spot-on? I think so, even though all are not in agreement. I hear a lot of “let’s get a top RB in the draft” comments, maybe from a vocal minority, but to learn our system takes time and our draft slot isn’t great and a healthier Addai plus a healthier OL should mean our run game is improved as it stands.

But I think everyone knows it needs to be better than just okay, and I think Edge could provide that. He is still good-to-very-good at all three aspects (run, rec, blk) in a complicated O. He was a mentor at a distance for Jaddai, and can now be one close up. He was buddies with Dom and can continue. Hart might be the odd man out, but Edge could be a great mentor to him as well assuming his knee recovers.

I assume he would also want the right to contend for the starting job, even though nobody would get more than 15 carries a game. Would he be okay with a secondary role, even if it meant 12 carries per game? Don’t know. Something as simple as THAT could determine his entire decision.

To me, the issue is money and years: I assume Edge being a typical top athlete, thinks he is worth more and has more years left in him than the market judges. He is richer than his wildest dreams when growing up, but he’s supporting a large and extended family—more money is always nice. I don’t think Indy can spend more than $1M for him and that’s barely above the vet minimum. An insult, really, but we’re at or over the cap right now. I also think he probably views his career as having 3-4 more good years, but league GMs probably think that’s closer to 2 years.

If he walks, I suspect the Colts will be maybe the 5th highest bidder for his services. Say they are at $1M and a couple other teams are it he $2-2.5M salary range. Then the contract term becomes an issue as well as fit. We all know that for fit, we are his #1 choice. We’d have to give him enough money to be close to the others, while the fit issue and the chance for another ring in a year or two makes up the difference.

If irsay is feeling flush with cash (he’s not) maybe a $5M singing bonus and the vet minimum would pay Edge enough for two years that he’d be okay, but we’d need a longer term to prorate out that bonus.

My feeling is that he’d want it and most of Colts management would welcome him, and that it would benefit the team—in 2009 it would benefit us as much as getting the 4th or 5th RB in the draft (in 2010 and beyond, not so much), but will it happen? I just don’t see it happening. To my dismay.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
