Kelvin Hayden Resigned
Rotoworld.com is reporting via NFL.com that we have resigned Kelvin Hayden to a 5 year 43 million dollar contract. There is reportedly 22.5 million guaranteed.
This really changes things because before, Adam Schefter (the only viable inside reporter) said that we would cut Marvin to make room for the franchise tag. Does anybody know if this contract would put us over the cap limit? Maybe Marvin restructured? I'm just glad that we got this done becuase Hayden will be an NFL star one day.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

And now...
We can use the franchise tag on Jeff Saturday.
Great news.

too expensive
the tag doesn’t separate O linemen. Tagging Saturday would be giving him LT money.

Dont think it will be needed
I think that a deal can be achieved without the tag…

it all depends on how much money the Colts think he is worth
Nate Davis = beast, God I hope he doesn't go to Detriot.......

non-exclusive tag
less money, chance for some high draft picks
win-win, cause then we can just get a guy like Alex Mack.
Regarding the money, I think the Colts realize just how much he means to the team (read as: a lot).

Yep.
Saturday is crucial to our offense…crucial.
Richard did ok filling in last year, but he needs more time to develop and Saturday needs to be around to help the kid out….not to mention, to get us to the SB next year!!
But, I’m partial. #63 is right behind #18 in my heart…

I like the fact that we didnt have to use the tag
but DAMN nearly 9 million a year is a lot for a zone corner. I love kelvin Hayden and Im watching Superbowl XLI right now and Kelvin just picked it off for 6. I’m happy for him.

it is a lot of money
but probably worth it, as long as he continues to improve and especially with Marlin’s uncertainty due to injury. I’ve been a Colts fan since I moved to Indy in ’95 and more than anything I think its just nice to have 2 corners that I really feel good about

this is a lot of money for a guy that just really started blossoming this year. Ugh. The only way I like this contract is if there is no more salary cap.

Yeah
But it’s going to be a MASSIVE hit this year. We’d be moving into the negative even if we did cut Marvin. Quite a bit. And the contracts are limited this year in how you can restructure, so people might be getting cut other than him for ONE player.
When we gave Bob his contract most of us assumed he was elite. Can anyone realistically say they KNOW Hayden is elite? No, but he’s getting paid more. And more than one player may have to go.
Although, we might be jumping the gun, nothing’s been released by the Colts.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

I think you’re agreeing with me.. :P Yea, I like Hayden, but personally, I’ve always liked Jackson more. I think that Jackson is a more complete cornerback than Hayden, and more versatile, to boot. I think Hayden may be slightly better than Jackson in coverage, but I think Jackson’s physical nature (not just his ability to tackle, but also his ability to be more physical with WRs) makes up for any lack of coverage skills.
I’m indifferent on Marvin. I like him, but only as a player. This has nothing to do with the off-field problems, I just never feel personally like Marvin connected with the fans. Now, this is his right, whatever, I’m not upset about it, but I’m not in love with him beyond his production, so once thats gone, its time to move on. If he can come back to pre-injury production, then I want him back on the team, otherwise, see ya.

I don't expect there to be a salary cap in 2010
And that is something the league has needed to get rid of for a long time. I hate salary caps.

i believe the salary cap is a big reason why the NFL is so great. This isn’t a league of the haves and the have nots, every team has a chance. That’s the way it should be

Will you be saying that when Paul Allen buys his Seahawks to unlimited Super Bowls?
Team owners and their net worth (data as of early 2008, so who knows what it really looks like now, but assuming all is still relative).
1. Paul Allen, Seattle Seahawks
Net worth: $16.8 billion
2. Malcolm Glazer, Tampa Bay Bucs
Net worth: $2.5 billion
3. Wayne Huizenga, Miami Dolphins
Net Worth: $2.5 billion
4. Randolph Lerner, Cleveland Browns
Net Worth: $1.6 billion
5. Robert McNair, Houston Texans
Net Worth: $1.5 billion
6. Arthur Blank, Atlanta Falcons
Net Worth: $1.5 billion
7. Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys
Net Worth: $1.5 billion
8. Robert Kraft, New England Patriots
Net Worth: $1.4 billion
9. Steve Bisciotti, Baltimore Ravens
Net Worth: $1.3 billion
10. Daniel Snyder , Washington Redskins
Net Worth: $1 billion

Nicely said
Having and spending gobs of $ is no guarantee of SBs (see yankees, New York), but it is a guarantee for raising salaries and marginalizing teams with smaller markets and owner bankrolls. Irsay’s ONLY business is the Colts. That’s one of the things that makes him an excellent owner (that, and learning from Dad’s mistakes). These other guys, all poorer now than in 2008 for sure, still have cash flow from other businesses.
Christ, most of Paul Allen’s ventures in the past decade have been big flops, but still he’s financially worth 12 Irsays. Paul Allen lives about 2 miles from me and owns two yachts/ships that are too big to fit through the locks to get into the lake where we live. I’ve seen some other Microsoft millionaires and their 150 foot yachts in the lake, but Allen’s two boats in the 400 foot range (think a naval destroyer) are too big. I will repeat: his boats are too big to park in front of his lakeside house. His residence has a 10k-15k SF practice gym for his basketball team. If there was no cap and he seriously wanted to buy a championship, he could pay Manning $40M a year, Freeney $20M, and they could line up next to Adrian Peterson, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, etc, all making the same money. It’s not a guarantee of a SB win, but it is a good way to screw up the market for proven vet players and teams that are not subsidized by an owner’s other wealth.
I’m generally a free market advocate, but I find the NFL universe too finite to not be screwed up by total freedom. Look at the “churn” in playoff teams over the last decade. MLB, even though a few small market teams do rise to the top every once in a while, cannot compete in the amount of fresh blood in the post season.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

Can't get his boat into the lake
Now that’s funny! (in a demented sort of way)

tl;dr
but i will say that 1) I might be mistaken, but while there won’t be a cap, there will be other spending/contract limiters. 2) if you believe that the COlts have one of the best FOs in the league, you kind of want there to be no salary cap. They have a brand new stadium, a super bowl coming in 3 years, and the small market teams that will survive in a no cap situation will be the teams that draft well. Just from a division standpoint, don’t you think the Colts would thrive even more in the AFCS with no cap? Newest stadium, best FO, best QB, etc… I mean they would be the team best equipped to handle it. I’m not saying I want to get rid of the cap, but I don’t think it will be all bad.

restricted free agency is extended to 6 years instead of 4
teams get two franchise tags, and there are restrictions on how many players playoff teams can sign.

An uncapped league
Would be worse for players than it is now. Right now they have a certain degree of protection because the NFLPA put together a union deal to get as much as they could for their players. The players didn’t opt out of the contract, the owners did.
With the longer time before a player can actually become an UFA, as shake pointed out, the more emphasis will be placed on the draft. It won’t be the wild west. I mean, the best years of most football players at skill positions is in the first 6 anyway. Most players are 29-30 after 6 years.
I personally hope they get another extension in place. Not only for this year, but the way the league is so competitive, why would you want to upset the balance?

Does these rules still apply with the franchise tag/tags
1.When an NFL player is franchised a second time, the team who franchised that player must pay him 30% more then what the franchise tender is worth for his position.
2.No NFL player can be franchised more then twice.
Go Colts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

your 1. and 2. don't agree
and neither are right
When a player is franchised they get the higher amount of either the average of the top 5 at their position or 120% of their previous years salary.
many times a player that was franchised before can’t be franchised again because in the contract they signed when tagged the year before the team agreed not to tag them the next year (either no matter what or if certain goals are met).

Wow that's interesting
Considering the fact that Bob Kraft couldn’t afford to re-sign Scott Pioli (something a good GM would have done) when his contract was up. And Irsay has said that he will give both Dungy and Polian “anything they want” to stay with the Colts.
I think here the Colts could be bigger spenders then some of these teams like the New England Patty Cakes. Since unlike other teams, the Colts manage to re-sign people, like Bill Polian who don’t count against the cap.

Would have let Pioli run it all in NE and made Belitits step down since he is still under contract.

I like this signing
Back to the matter at hand, I’m glad that we got the Hayden signing done. Now we don’t have to cough up 10 million to tag him. However, this means that Marvin and some otehrs are probably getting the boot. I’m not so conserned about Marvin getting cut though. Yes he has been a great player for us, but sadly, father time caught up with him. i’m just afraid that a guy like Brackett might have to go now for cap reasons. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out

Disagree,
Clearly the most likely Colt to leave VIA free agency even though he isn’t that high priced is Tyjuan Haggler. But the Colt are prolly going to release him when free agency starts anyways.
