Marvin 3rd best WR all time (Pro-Football-Reference.com)
PFR is the best stat site out there, and in their blog they came up with a formula to rate wide receivers all time.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=1486#comments
On this list, Marvin was ranked 3rd of all time. Jerry Rice is obviously first, while Don Hutson got some love at 2nd.
The rest of the top 10: T.O, Moss, Alworth, Largent, Irvin, Berry, and Jimmy Smith.
Reggie Wayne is 79th.
I found this article pretty interesting, I was wondering what the take of some of the people here is on it. (Especially someone like Shake, who loves these obscure stats)
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Interesting list
It’s a cumulative list, so it values lots of years. I’m surprised that Andre Johnson (2003) is so far ahead of Reggie Wayne (2001). I think AJ is a monster but Reggie has been a very good pro bowler and had an actual NFL caliber QB, so I’d assume his production including extra years would be greater. I’d also be surprised if, in five years time, Reggie was not top-25. Looks like a steep mountain to climb, but I expect that kind of production from him as he and PM wrap up their careers.
It doesn’t measure things like drops and fumbles or YAC. And there is no possible way to include context—like Steve Smith or Marvin being the sole deep threat for 5-6 years, or the vintage SD guys (Joiner, Chandler, Winslow v 1.0) who were all good and had a high-flying offense, vampiring away receptions form each other, but also drawing off some double coverage as well.
All in all, not bad.

Wayne had a slow start though
while AJ had a more “bursting onto the scene” rookie year.
Wayne had 345 and 716 yards his first two seasons, while AJ was in college.
Then in Wayne’s 3rd year, AJ’s rookie year. AJ still outperformed Wayne, 838 to 937
Wayne didn’t make much of the two year head start. He developed into a Pro-Bowl Caliber WR, AJ was one right away.

Another non-measurement
One thing I like that FO does is measure success rate/first downs. Using more conventional stats, a 13 yard catch on 3rd and 15 looks pretty good, but it’s not all that helpful and not much better than a 5 yard catch or even a drop—both likley result in a punt or a FG attempt. Garbage time stats are also not a good measure of a person’t quality/useful production, but they’re there….
