Marvin Wants Released
According to NFL.com, Marvin has asked to be released from the Colts. While it is hard for me to tell a player not to go out and look for all the money he thinks he deserves, I think Marvin might be making a mistake here. The Colts have been very generous with Marvin over the years (evidenced by the fact that Marvin's cap hit this year will be the most among WRs). Next man up.

You need to take that god awful thumb nail icon of Phil Rivers
Off, he looks like a dufas in it and he plays for a team in a town that never has and never will win anything type of sports championship. Hell I bet the Cubs win a WS before the Chargers even go back to another super bowl.

Apparently his eyes are set on Philadelphia, but no way he gets a big contract. Even if he was willing to take a pay cut (to say like 8 million dollars) that would be more he would make anywhere else!

I love what you did for the Colts and all Marvin, but you’re one greedy son of a bitch. I just can’t believe you of all people would sit there and refuse to help the Colts organization out by restructing your insane contract considering you are a shell of your former self and are clearly in decline. What team are you going to join that gives you a better chance at winning another Super Bowl and making your already great career even that much better? It’s just sad. I never thought I’d say this, but goodbye, and good riddance.

It's tough
I think Marvin could still be really productive with the Colts, but it just isn’t realistic to keep him.

OMG
Its sad for me to say this but i agree with you. I cant believe this, Im really disappointed about Marv. This team did EVERYTHING for Marv, and right now, he looks like a fuckin mercenary out there. At his age and evident decline, there is NO better team than the Colts for him to try to win another SB. Trading Manning for Donovan McFag? trading Manning for anyone right now is so stupid. He thinks hes still 26 or something and while the Colts spoke highly of him in recent weeks, he comes and slaps every single player/fan/employee of the colts right in the face…This is just sad. I bet Polian, Caldwell and Manning feel extremely disappointed. Specially Peyton who will surely try to talk to him but now, and with that kind of attitude, I hope TJ Houshmandzadeh comes here. I didnt want to admit it but he would be more productive than Marvin. Good luck Marv.

I don't think it's completely about the money
He is really into the city of Philly, it’s where he’s from and the city means a lot to him. He probably thinks this is a really great move for himself.
by MarkFive05 on Feb 23, 2009 12:45 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree it's not all about money
Some of it is about money, but I think Marvin feels disrespected somehow (although I don’t know exactly how or why). And I get the sense that there’s a rift between Marvin and Peyton that has both of them ready to move on. Being out of synch at the beginning of the season is understandable, but they never really got back in synch again. Lots of missed connections and questioning looks even at the end of the season.
by ctnyc on Feb 23, 2009 1:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe its not about the money
But if its not about the money, then why would it be? Because he wants to play for his hometown? Man, i understand Philly means a lot to him but what about Indy? That city gave him everything.
Disrespect? What? I mean, Colts fans never said anything bad about him. Even if he had a crappy game, like for example, against Pittsburgh, people would only support him. I can guarantee you that colts fans wouldve wanted him to stay, even when we all knew he was in a very evident decline. And i dont really think that theres that rift between Marv and Peyton.
Anyway, hope he has taken a good decision, he did gave a lot to the colts, dont misunderstand me. I will still be grateful to him and will appreciate him for as long as Im a Colts fan (which would be like…til im dead) but for now, im disappointed and sad about this whole thing
by Piojocuau on Feb 23, 2009 1:36 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah I don't know
why he would feel disrespected, but if he and the Colts can’t come to terms on a restructured contract, then obviously he has a different idea of his value than the team does. Maybe that’s it. Maybe he’s heard the speculation from the fans and the media that he’s in decline and he disagrees. Who knows? But I’m guessing there’s a little of that in the mix.
As for he and Peyton, again I don’t have any rock solid proof; it’s just a feeling. I know he had his own rehab to do before games, but you’d think they’d have found a way to include him in the route-running tree that they’d always done before. Whatever the case, I think it’s clear that Peyton and Marvin were not on the same page many times last year, and it lasted the duration of the season. That has never been the case before. Again, this is all just speculation, but the bond they had did not seem to be the same last year.

Yes I'm being serious
Doubt it would be the only reason, but it could be one more straw. If the guy is delusional that he can get paid more anywhere else, perhaps he’s paranoid that Peyton would rather play with TJ.
In any case, that’s why I posed it as a question… that denotes a sense of uncertainty.

All in all though, I’m really not that disappointed. We all knew that he was going to start declining, and that injury he suffered in 2007 was the beginning of the end for the Marvin Harrison era. I understand Polian is going to his best to find Marvin 2.0, but he needs to go about this the smart way. Shore up your running game first, you have plenty of receivers waiting in the wings who could be that next big thing. Without a average to above average running game, the Colts aren’t going to win shit, Marvin Harrison or no Marvin Harrison.
I’m going to assume Gonzo is going to be replacing him. Lord knows he’s had ample time to get comfortable with the offense, and honestly, I think he’ll do great in his stead. My main concern is that Gonzo doesn’t disappear in playoff games like Harrison did. I’ve always believed that you can’t pin 99% of the playoff games on Peyton, you need to look at the cast surrounding him, particularly Marvin.
I’m sure I’ll get a lot of flack for this, but it’s true.

About Gonzo and the playoffs
He had a very nice game against the Chargers but they stopped throwing to him in the 4th quarter. About Marv in the playoffs, maybe he did disappear but i wont ever forget that conversion against the Patriots in the 06 AFC championship game

Very sad moment
So long, Marvin. He had the most tenure with the Colts, but now it is done. Hopefully Hakeem Nicks will be his replacement or else we will see if Roy Hall can step up. I wish he could just take the goddamned pay cut and stay with us, but it is better if he just goes to Philly, plays a year or two there and retires quietly. I was wishing that he and Edgerrin would just retire this year so they could be inducted together, but I guess not.
The Colts next year are going to be very different. We probably won’t see as big of a shakeup in big names until Peyton retires, which will be the worst day in Colts history.
by Colts Homer on Feb 22, 2009 11:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Honestly, I’m over the whole reunion stuff. I was happy the Colts picked up Dom last year, but that was only because they really had no other choice. Things could be vastly different right now had Mike Hart not been injured, but hindsight is always 20/20.
Yeah, it’d be cool if Edge came back. The nostalgia aspect would be phenominal, but honestly, I’d only want it if I knew for a fact the Colts would be that much better, or at least it would put them over the hump in the running back area. Do I think that will happen if Edge comes back? Maybe, but I’m leaning towards no.
I’m to the point now where it doesn’t bother me that Saturday and Harrison are walking. Those key guys have only amounted to a total of 1 Super Bowl titles. To me, this is a clear indication that it’s really time to move on to bigger and better things. Those guys gave it their all, but in the end, it was only good enough for 1 ring. Don’t get me wrong, that 1 title was amazing and still one of the greatest memories of my life to date. But I want Polian to start working his magic and bring guys in who can contribute it different ways in hopes that maybe they’ll work out better. Roy Hall very well could be our Fitzgerald. Rashad Jennings very well could be our Matt Forte. Pollack could be the next Saturday. We really won’t know until they are put in that position and understand that they are “the guy.” But to think that losing those guys is the end of the world is absurd. These changes could be a blessing in disguise (at least I’m hoping so).

I mean...
I dont consider this to be the end of the world but you have to say this is sad. Its as Dungy said, this team shouldve won more rings. They at least deserved 3 or 4. I dont know about Roy Hall being someone like Fitzgerald or any of the other comparisons you made but still, its very sad whats happening right now. This had to happen someday but not like this. I always thought that Marv would retire as a Colt.
And about Edge, it would be nice to have him back and as you say, he is no guarantee at all but still, he can still contribute to this offense.
Its true that the Colts have to move into the future, besides its not as if we lost Peyton or something (that day i will cry all day) . Sad but lets see how it works out…

That may be the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. If he were going to be half as good as a one-armed Fitzgerald you think he would have shown uh, you know, sign of it by now.

I don’t remember hearing anyone say anything negatively about his abilities. His only problem is he can’t stay healthy. Toss in the fact that ever since he was signed there was no spot available for him to start. We haven’t seen what he is capable, hence the statement “could be the next Fiztgerald.”

HAHA!
Seriously though, this puts Gonzo at #2, where I think he should be, and finally allows some other receivers to potentially show what they can do. I understand what you’re saying. I’d love to see Roy get some playing time and yeah, maybe he does go crazy and becomes the Rey Lewis of offense. Roy’s an intimidating guy. Or he could utterly fail, at least then we’d finally know.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

But, you know YOU KNOW people will act like this is all the end of the world for us. We as fans who watch every game and obsess over it know better.
I will laugh at the first person who says this offseason we are “aging”. Okay, well we could possibly be the youngest team in the league, top 3 youngest. We have only a few stars well over 30 now.
I think you can leave the signing aging junk to the Pats. They love it. Oh and they are SB faves. What with Brady coming off an ACL and MCL tear? I wish people would realize 4 trohpies were won since the Pats did.
Lets just keep the young talent plugging along and watch the best QB in the league. Oh and did I mention I love the fact Meeks is gone?
I am sick of people acting like we have to stay the same every year to have a shot, staying the same and making no changes usually gets us one and done. I like a few shake ups.

Big mistake on Marvin's part
He must think that some team out there will give him that type of money for a declining 37 yr old WR. He must be in talks with the Raiders or someone? I thought Marv would’ve retired as a Colt, but I guess I was wrong.
by KMR24 on Feb 23, 2009 12:35 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah.....
It would appear Marvin believes a team will give him too much money. honestly I dont think he will do all that well on another team. He might have a chip on his shoulder but he might also keep declining and be in denial he is not what he used to be.
Also, Peyton to Gonzo will become a thing of beauty this year folks. We saw flashes last year and Gonzo was often involved in some memorable moments (can you forget the Vikings game) so I am excited. Gonzo has always reminded me of a young ricky proehl in terms of brains, style and clutchness.
Wide receivers have big egos and Marvin is not the only one me thinks.

why wouldn’t people take offense? I ‘ve said this before, but I don’t mind repeating myself:
I’ve loved (as players) Peyton, Dallas, Joe Joe, Bob, Bethea, Brackett, Dfree, SUPER MATHIS, and Saturday, and also Edge. I will be (or was , in the case of James) sad when they no longer wear the horse shoe, either because they moved on or because of retirement.
I am not sad that Marvin Harrison is leaving. I never had a player-fan connection with him. It was all about the money, the ball is, after all, brown every where, right Marvin? Or is it round everywhere? I don’t know, and frankly, I don’t care. Get paid. Then go disappear for some other team. I hope you take some 5 year, big money contract from the Patriots, tie up their cap for a while, that will be nice.
The Colts as an organization over paid you in your last contract. It doesn’t matter who you were, that was too much. They now want to PAY OUT the rest of that contract, just over a few more years, so, ya know, they aren’t hit for $13M on the cap for a 3rd string caliber talent. ANd instead of just accepting it and saying, ‘thanks to the organization for makin my wallet fat, and the best QB ever for makin my stats fat, i’ll resign for 3 years and whatever the Colts think is fair’ you said, ‘MO MONEY, BITCHES’.
This isn’t something like a boston rant, where one week they LOVE JOHNNY DAMON, and then the next, when he leaves, OMG THAT DAMON IS JOHNNY DEMON WHAT A MORON HE SUCKED ANYHOW LOL HE WAS SO BAD.
I’ve been pretty consistent that Marvin is in the decline and I’ve said consistently I’ve thought he disappeared in the playoffs. Whatever the case, this is a shitty way to go out. Atleast the way y ou’re going out matches the way, you, you know, played the last year.

Cut Harrison, Move Gonzalez to the Split and draft Harvin or Maclin.
I love the colts and always have, and as much i love marvin harrison and what he has done for this team i think it is time for him to go. I stood up for him last year before the season when people said he didn’t have any left in the tank. And he proved me wrong by showing me that his age has def. caught up with him. He just isnt the same. I would like to see them let him go and draft another wide reciever to replace him. this is a pretty strong year for revievers. There is about a good 9 quality recievers in this draft to replace harrison. I would like to see a Percy Harvin to amp up the return game and also he is like a marvin harrison comparison. same size and just as fast when marvin was in his prime. I believe in Gonzalez i loved how versatile he was last year. A great slot reciever and he even was moved around on plays to the split or even the flanker. So i believe he is ready for the #2 spot. Brian Robiskie, 6-2 208, is alot a great pick and someone to watch. he is great at snatching the ball in the air and keeping it away from his body and can run amazing routes. His dad is a receivers coach for atlanta so you know he is a knowledgeable player. He’s got good size and ran the 40 in 4.5 sunday at the combine. He is looking really good and we could possibly snatch him in the second too. It helps that Polian likes him too. sorry this is so long i just have a lot of inputs for this.

Don't draft Maclin
He’s way to small and will just get beat up all the time. I would rather the Colts try and trade Harrison somewhere rather than just release him. That way control where he goes and get some draft pick out of the deal. This really makes me sad. I thought Indy meant more to him then this. The guy I would like to get is the WR from Maryland who’s name I always mispell. He’d give the Colts a deep threat and he’s got some good size as well. I think it’s almost a lock that Indy’s taking a WR in the first round now.

One more thing
i saw on a post last month people talking about giving up on Addai. No way, it is to early to be saying that, this guy is the total package. No not like a Adrian Peterson or anything, but he is a great blocker so i know Peyton loves him in the backfield. Also he has good vision yeah he dances sometimes but im ok with that because i think he is good enough to where yeah sometime it screws him over but also sometimes it turns into a damn good gain. I do agree we need a good 2nd back every team does.I hate to say it but Mike Hart things arent looking good for him. And i like him a lot, i am a huge michigan fan, so i wouldnt say that unless i ment it. He was hurt all the time at michigan and it hasnt stopped like i hoped it would. Our line was so beat up this season it was terrible. Jeff saturday being hurt, Tony Ugoh and others. Basically this was just a bad year for the colts and injuries, and it happens in the nfl. I expect better things next year. But one thing is for certain for us to get better we need to be healthy on the line, Addai needs to be back in 06 form, which i think he will. And upgrade the damn DT posiition please!!!!!!

In reply to Sanders_fan89
Marvin was a small guy too, so don’t count out Harvin. He is so explosive and a big play guy, also versitile. And i agree about Darrius Heyward-Bey. Good size and speed, has a little bit of problems with drops at the combine, but yeah he is a good solid receiver though. I like Hakeem Nicks and Kenny Britt also. Nicks is good size as well and is very smooth with routes and cuts. Kenny Britt is proborably the biggest receiver in the draft and is compared to T.O. size wise, not personality thankfully. he is 6-4 215, i like him a lot.

o i thought you said don’t draft harvin, i didn’t know you put maclin. but i don’t mind him either, he also is awesome in the return game, and we need a boost there. we have no return game it seems.

I like Britt a lot
I hope the Colts could pick him up because he’s really big. As for Maclin, my favorite college team plays in the Big 12 so I’ve watched Maclin up close in person and he just doesn’t seem to play every down and a lot of times when he catches the ball he doesn’t seem to try and fight for extra yards. For some reason I just have a bad feeling that he’s going to have an injury problem in the NFL. Call it a hunch or being paranoid, but I just don’t see him staying healthy. Also, he did play in Mizzou’s crazy spread offense that threw the ball almost all the time so his stats are a bit inflated.

Bye bye
Not suprised. I hate to say it but I noticed the chemistry between Peyton and Marvin were completely off the last few seasons, maybe even going back slightly to 2006. I dont know why I feel this way but something clearly to me was just not right with Marvin towards Peyton.Just a feeling…
I think Marvin probably feels “slighted” and his pride is hurt being asked to take a big paycheck and possibly even a lesser role in our offense.
Love what Marvin used to be but its time to move on. And I honestly feel our offense will be better without Peyton having to force him so many balls. Is it any wonder Peyton had his best game of the year without Marvin? The game that locked him the MVP? We did find without him in 2007 too.
I think we may draft Britt or Nicks. I heard the Colts scouted every game last year Britt played to watch him and Polian praised Nicks today at the combine.

careers and business
we may be fans, but let’s remember this is a business and to Marvin it is his living. I think all of us hoped he would retire a colt, but realistically I don’t think he will at this point. He is still a good player though his best years are probably behind him. If he thinks he can get more money somewhere else than what the colts think he is worth at this point I wish him all the best, and will certainly career for him in 7 or 8 years when he is a first ballot HOFer.

Doesn't makes sense.
How will Marv get paid more than 7 mil for the next year? He got to have something big set up, otherwize this doesn’t makes sense.
And the only skill Harrison has diminished in, is his ability to catch the ball. He has just dropped too many passes this year. However, I believe he still got plenty in the tank, I just don’t see a lot of executives that share that opinion with me.

I hope it isn’t about money. But I don’t understand why Harrison’s getting all this flack for walking away when Edge chased the cash and now everyone’s all rose-tinted about him. Harrison was hands down the best receiver in the NFL for a good solid 2 years, and in the conversation for the best in another 5, and we overpaid him? Bullshit we did.
We paid for the best and we got it, and we have the ring to show for it. If Harrison wants to play for someone else, well, thanks for the memories Marv, best of luck with the rest of your career, see you in the HoF, ’mon the Gonzo.
Enough bitterness.

Edge didn't chase the cash
You only get once chance in the NFL to get a fat contract, and the Colts weren’t willing to give him it after his rookie deal, he got that in ‘zona when we didn’t give him a competitive deal.
marvin has had all these years of crazy money, and wants more.
There’s a difference.

Great point.
Does he really think he’s still worth the big money? I think he’s probably upset by the huge contract Hayden got.
If I had a choice between Saturday and Marv, I take Saturday – without a doubt.

What?
He didn’t chase the cash, he just went for his one big chance at a lot of cash? Err…
I have no problem with Edge leaving for his payday. If he thought he was worth more than the Colts would offer, fair play.
But I apply the same standard to Harrison. If he thought he could perform at a higher level than the Colts asked him to accept with a restructured deal, then I can’t blame him for walking away. Would I have done it? No. But he’s a professional footballer with a limited shelf life to make some money out of his body. If he feels like he can max it elsewhere then with us, so be it.

Sad, but not unexpected.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up….with McNabb? It sure does get cold outside in Philly in the latter part of the season…. burrrrr

All in all
I’d rather him go to the NFC. And frankly it’d be kinda fun to watch him play with D-Jax.
