Colts making one-year offers to restricted free agents Lance Ball and Daniel Muir
Looks like Polian wants to keep the big running back and the beefy defensive tackle around in 2009:
The Indianapolis Colts have offered 1-year contracts to defensive tackle Daniel Muir and running back Lance Ball, who are both restricted free agents.Agent Anthony Paige confirmed the tender offers Thursday, hours before free agents can begin signing with new teams.
Ball was the kid who bashed his way through the Tennessee defense in the final game of the regular season last year. Muir played sparingly in 2008, but he has the size and quickness necessary to play NT in our Tampa-2.
Noticeably absent from the restricted free agency tender list is Freddie Keiaho. The deadline to offer restricted free agents a contract is today.

The articles a bit off
they are “Exclusive Rights” Free Agents. They don’t have 3 years of service so the Colts own their rights even when they contracts are up. If Indy offers them a league minimum contract they can take it or hold out. If Indy doesn’t offer them a contract then they are UFAs.

This is really good news. For a while there I thought they were just going to give up on Muir. I think he and Mookie are going to be key in the run defense this season. I think Lance is going to be filling in for Hart as the 3rd option until he recovers from that knee injury. It’d be nice to see Lance get some more carries though.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Lance Ball
I’ve got to admit he looked pretty good last year. Maybe he’ll take over at the number 2 RB spot if Dom doesn’t comeback.

This seems to open the door for a LB
Not offering Freddie a contract is telling me that LB will be prominent in the offseason moves.

My gut feeling is that he's gone
I know, this is really premature, but after Keiaho’s dismal performance last season, I don’t see the Colts offering him anything. Take it with a grain of salt, but I expect to see Session at WILL, Brackett at MIKE, and Wheeler at SAM come next season. With Wheeler, I just can’t imagine the coaches letting his talent go to waste on the bench for another year. We’ve heard the praise for Wheeler from Phil B. Wilson during training camp, and I’ve seen it with my own eyes. I know he would shine the second he’s given a chance. Plus, reinserting Session to his natural position at WILL could vault him to Pro Bowl status considering what he was able to do at SAM. This just seems like the most logical thing to do going into next season, at least IMHO.

Agreed. I think Coyer will utilize Wheeler a lot next season. Coyer really likes aggression linebackers as evidenced from his time in Denver. I except the Colts to drafty heavy in the linebacker and o-line positions.

I still would feel more comfortable if they kept either Keiaho or Hagler for depth purposes, especially at the LB position. Plus, Wheeler hasn’t proved anything yet so if does screw up, the Colts would have a backup player with experience.
