Matt Cassel traded to Chiefs
Patsies get draft picks and approximately $14 mil in cap relief. I really hope this doesn't open the door for a Pepper's acquisition.

You shouldn't
For the Patsies it was either make this trade with Matt Cassel or trade him to Denver for the 12th over all pick.
Anyone remember POTFH???

I can hate it if I want...
and I do. By making the trade, they cleared $17 million in cap space for both Cassel and Vrabel. Regardless of whether they had received any picks in return, that cap space is pretty darn valuable. I had hoped that they would enter the 2009 campaign strapped for cash and – assuming they wouldn’t put two QBs on the field at once – with poor asset utilization.

OK, your entitled to your own opinion, but just keep these things in mind
1.Tom Brady is payed higher then Matt Cassel. And Tom Brady is nursing a knee injury far worst then Marvin Harrison’s 2 season’s ago that no NFL player has ever came back from and been the same.
2.The Patty Cakes turned down a 3 team trade with Denver and Tampa that would have given them the 12th over pick in the 2009 draft, Denver Matt Cassel and the 20th pick in the 09 draft, and Tampa Jay Cutler.
3.Even if the Patsies hadn’t turned down the 3 team trade with Denver and Tampa, they still would have been able to trade Mike Vrable to the Chiefs for a draft pick likely lower then 33 or 34.
4.The Patsies were prolly over the sallary cap when they franchised Matt Cassel anyways.

You think they could get a first round pick for Vrabel?
you’re crazy.
and the 3 way trade with the Broncos giving the #12 pick is a rumor that only Mortenson got on board with. It’s probably not true.
The Pats were still well under that cap, and it’s not hard to look up the numbers
http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/numbers.asp (took less than 30 seconds to get their cap room pre-franchising Cassel)

Dude YOU READ
1.The Patriots traded Mike Vrabel and Matt Cassel to the Cheifs for a second round pick.
2.I said the Pats still could have gotten a draft pick for Mike Vrabel likely lower then 33 or 34, meaning that since picks 33 and 34 are in the second round and KC only has ONE second round pick in 09 that was traded away. The Pats couldn’t have gotten higher then a third round pick from KC for Varbel. But it prolly would have been a 4th round pick anyways.
3.Vrabel was traded to the Chiefs for a disclosed draft (meaning that Scott Pioli was negociating with BB on the trade, but either way Vrabel was going to the Chiefs even if Cassel had been traded to another team) pick one day before Cassel was traded to the Chiefs.

lower doesn't have a totally clear meaning when talking about draft picks
I read, but not minds.
and you were wrong or using unproven reports on the 3 other points that weren’t re-stating the obvious.

I already proved you wrong about your first point a few days ago. That’s so wrong it’s not even funny.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Correction,
on the 3 team trade, Denver was going to receive the 19th pick

wait...
another team is involved now according to Schefter…
regardless, looks like Cassel is gone one way or another.

Trade
I don’t think this will pay off for the Chiefs like they’d hope. While Cassel played well, he got sacked 47 times behind a pretty strong O-line. Surrounded by the garbage O-Line in KC, I don’t expect all that great of things.
The Patriots are geniuses for pulling it off, because I assume they get a 1st rounder plus more, and they free up cap.

I’m not sure the Pats O-line was all that good last season, but then compared to the Chiefs it was the Great Wall of China.
Still, at least he’s proven he can take the hits…

Either way
It was the same line as the year before (Except for RG injuries) that gave up 21 sacks to Brady on about 60 more pass attempts. Who knows how much of that is tied to QB’s and how much is just bad O-Line play.

His sacks mostly came early in the season
then when he got his sea-legs, and learned to see through the pass-rush, he panicked less and thrived
Keep the faith!

Crazy
Pats get two 1st rounders every year it seems
by furrycolt on Feb 28, 2009 1:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I hear that that is not what the Pats got
According to Schefter, the Chiefs shipped off a second and a conditional pick for BOTH Vrabel and Cassel. To me, thats a great deal for KC
by metal_militia on Feb 28, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
sorry
now its only a second round pick. That is the only thing the Pats are getting for BOTH Cassel and Vrabel. What a steal for KC
by metal_militia on Feb 28, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
The Chiefs are going to be better next year. Maybe not playoffs good, but they could get to .500.
I like Albert (or whoever the offensive lineman they drafted last year) a lot. I do think that the Chiefs have a lot of talent. If they could get someone like Michael Oher in the draft, they will have a lot of potential down the road.

ye wtf no 1st rounder, not even in 2010
the chiefs are gonna be every experts sleeper in 2009.
add aaron curry to the mix at number three overall.

what do you mean wtf no 1st rounder?
the chiefs only giving up a second is good
by metal_militia on Feb 28, 2009 3:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well its pretty close to a first rounder anyway
pick 35
by furrycolt on Feb 28, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
no no it's excellent
i’m just shocked the pats didn’t squeeze a first rounder out of this.
the 2nd round pick is still a valuable asset, but for cassel and vrabel they get cap space and 2nd rounder.
alot of people expected them to get more.

I expected them to get more
Seeing as they got a first rounder for Deion Branch way back when.

Apparently there was almost no market for him, although I can’t believe the Lions didn’t take a swing at him at that price.
If the Chiefs draft some O-line and find a second WR in free agency (apparently some guy named Coles hasn’t got a deal yet) they could have some weapons next season, although they’ll still struggle with inconsistency as their line figures out the NFL.

I think the "erasing $14 million in cap room" still made this a great deal for the Pats
And Belichick’s BFF Pioli knew it. Reeks of collusion to me, but whatever. I’m not bitter.

Yeah, I get a bad vibe from the whole deal too. Pretty shady stuff going on. But should we be surprised? No, not in the slightest.

It’s not like we’d have an interest in those guys or we have to play the Chiefs so, meh. I’m not too bothered if Pioli and Billski got up to some hanky panky.

They were good, they were practically the same unit which allowed brady to take a dump in the pocket if he wanted to 2 years ago. of course with cassel at the helm teams were less hesitant the blitz, plus the pats used less 5 receivers sets. but still, a very quality o-line, even better (and healthier) the ours (which obviously wasn’t very good, but above mediocre when it came to pass blocking) .
by ColtfanIL on Feb 28, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
On the other hand
That was also the O-line that the Giants made look like a bunch of pre-schoolers in the Super Bowl.
I’m just not convinced that O-line is anything special. Admittedly the Giants pass rush is something very, very special.

I STILL SAY
the Chiefs should have drafted a franchise QB.

I'm a Chiefs fan
AND a Colts fan. So the Chiefs matter to me. This move irritates me, because I see it as possibly just setting the franchise up for two more years of mediocrity. I think they should STILL draft a QB with their #3 pick, but they won’t. They haven’t drafted a franchise QB (a’la Manning, Manning, Culver, etc) since 1983 (Todd Blackledge), and he was the only QB they have ever drafted with their first draft pick.
Also, the last time the Chiefs picked this high in the draft (#3 or higher) was in 1988 when they had the #2 overall pick.

I thought the Chiefs drafted very well last year.
I told people that they would be good in a couple of years because of it. One was just too soon. I think Pioli walked into a great opportunity. There are some young stars waiting to make their mark. I like the Cassel and Vrabel move. For both teams. Cassel really came on last season with his experience. He and Bowe will be a great hook up.
I don’t think there is a QB worthy of their first round pick this year. I think the Chiefs ought to grab Aaron Curry if he is still there at #3. That coupled with Glen Dorsey, Branden Albert and Brandon Flowers gives you some great pieces to build with.

Dude Peppers isn't going to the Patsies
Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Ellis Hobbs, and Ben Watson will all be FA’s next season. The Patsies will need to re-sign those guys before they can even dream of signing Peppers.
Also looks like the Patsies will have to count on Brady and his bum knee. That doesn’t look good for them, since no one has ever came back from an injury as serous as Brady’s and been the same!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like the end of their dynasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is great
The Patsies chose to trade Mike Vrabel and Matt Cassel to KC for a second round pick instead putting Matt Cassel in a 3 team trade with Tampa and Den that would have gotten the Patsies the 12th over all pick in the 09 draft. Looks like Nick Casserio could be another Matt Millen in the making.
