Super Bowl Prop Bets Contest Results
For (almost) everyone's sake, I'm glad we weren't betting real money in this contest. While it was a lot of fun following along with some of the normally insignificant parts of a football game, only 3 people would have won money. Here's a quick snapshot of those 3:
| Name | Total $$ | Correct | No Bets |
|---|---|---|---|
| shake n bake | 3118.93 | 9 | 12 |
| colteys | 2823.46 | 12 | 0 |
| lsahr | 2489.19 | 12 | 1 |
Congratulations to shake and bake, as he correctly picked 9 of the 12 bets he picked. He gets the satisfaction of knowing he would have won $700 had he actually put money down.
Some of the bets were not game related, so I'll go through those with the winners:
- Coin Toss: Heads. This was year 12 in a row that the NFC team won the coin toss. If I told you that 12 years ago, it would have been a 0.02% chance (1/4096) of happening. Pretty amazing.
- Which Super Bowl Commercial was the best?: Doritos. You can check out the ratings here. This was my favorite as well, with 2nd place being the Cash4Gold commercial with Ed McMahon and MC Hammer. That was great.
- Bruce Springsteen's first song?: Tenth-Avenue Freeze Out. Of course he picks a song that wasn't on the list to choose from. Thanks Bruce.
- Which Super Bowl will have more viewers?: Super Bowl XLIII. This one didn't seem too tough, as Super Bowl XL was a snoozer. This year's edition was the highest rated in history.
- Which state will have the largest market share in TV Ratings?: Pennsylvania. This isn't an exact answer, but Phoenix was ranked 9th in terms of city ratings, and Pittsburgh was #1. Funny enough, Indianapolis was 10th.
- Will Matt Millen pick the correct team to win the Super Bowl on the NBC Pregame?: No. I posted it right after his pick of the Cardinals, which was the kiss of death. Dungy got the pick right, of course.
- Who will the MVP of the Game thank first?: Nobody. If somebody can show me otherwise, I'll change it. I listened for anything remotely close to a thank you, and found nothing. It was all about Santonio.
- What will happen with the Stock Market the day after Super Bowl XLIII?: Market Down. The Dow Jones was down on Monday 63.79 points. Three years ago after the Steelers won, the market was down 55.95 points. Another reason the Steelers winning is not good for anyone.
Everything else can be found in the box score. Both QBs beat their previous passing yardage, and the catch by Holmes put him 4 yards over Fitzgerald for most in the game.
Full standings are after the jump. The column "No Bets" is the number of bets that you didn't bet on. I recommend to all of you not to become professional gamblers (myself included). These were harder than expected.

I think some extra congratulations are in order for the 2nd and 3rd place finishers as they actually placed bets on (almost) all of the options. While it makes more sense to only bet on the ones you feel strongly about (Shake), we’re not using real money and being conservative isn’t fun. You should have points taken away for playing the safe route when no real money was involved.
maybe if it hadn't led with the cointoss
which is a phenomenally stupid thing to bet on if you are paying juice.
That got me into “half of these are really stupid bets” mode.

thank god I’m spending all my “juice” on loans for school instead of gambling although after a while school loans start to feel like gambling too…gambling on your own ambition/laziness
I just can't get over why people would bet that
you are paying 51-49 odds on something that’s by definition 50-50.

Edge rushing yards over 49.5
Willie Parker to score a TD
Fitz to score Zona’s 1st TD.
Hit the other 9.

It’s actually “only” a 1/2048 chance, as the first one doesn’t count as it starts a streak for whichever conference wins.
[/stats nerd + also I read it on Shutdown Corner]
They explained it perfectly
I said:
This was year 12 in a row that the NFC team won the coin toss. If I told you that 12 years ago, it would have been a 0.02% chance (1/4096) of happening.
Here’s what Shutdown Corner said:
the odds of the NFC winning 12 straight tosses is, indeed, one in 4,096. But the odds of either the AFC or NFC winning 12 straight is one in 2,048.
Basically, the odds of it ever happening (12 in a row) are 1/2048, but for a singular conference, or the next 12, it is 1/4096.

Isn’t it clear from this table that I am, in fact, a professional gambler?

Of course
If I would have been betting real money, rest assured I would have gotten every single bet wrong, which is why I don’t do it with real money, glad to know I was second best at betting with fake money, maybe that means I’m due for a big monopoly win soon.
Weather out here is SWEET! NICE!
Oh yeah and Shake
the only way i will accept coming in 2nd because you didn’t bet 12 of them is because you’re a Hawk fan as well, so I’ll let this one slide haha
Weather out here is SWEET! NICE!
you watching the basketball game?
so awful. Both them and Indiana are awful, Hawks were down 20, now they’ve cut it to 6.
