This mock is dated 2/28, and a lot of free agent activity has happened between then and now. However, one interesting thing Colts Homer noted, which I agree with, is that he has the Colts passing on DT Peria Jerry. From what I know, the Colts do not have any interest in drafting Jerry. The DTs they have approached for interviews during the Combine and other evetns are Fili Moala, Ron Brace, and Corvey Irvin.

Passing on Jerry

Blasphemy, pure blasphemy

Please, please draft a big Defensive Tackle. Please?

anyone else out there read moneyball?

it’s like their “operation shutdown” Billy Beane wanted Nick Swisher to fall to them in the draft so bad that he didn’t go watch any of his games because that would up the buzz around Swisher and tip the A’s hand on who they wanted.

still, how many MLB 1st rounders even make it to the big leagues?

The A’s ended up getting 3 legit sounding prospects for him

I guess that's why I would say he's overrated, really

The CWS paid a lot for a guy with a .244 career BA. He had only one good season, too. Great job by Beane once again.. although I’m sure he had higher hopes for Swisher, it ended up working out for him in the end anyway. And now Swisher is on the Yankees…go figure, lol.

I'm just very defensive of Moneyball/The A's success

I hate that “Billy Beane’s shit doesn’t work in the playoffs” stuff (in the context of no title invalidating their process).

It’s not enough to take a bottom 5 payroll and be top 10 year after year after year, you have to be top 1 once to validate it?

Hopefully

Jeremy Maclin can fall just a little bit more to us

by FreeneyWillEatYourBaby on Mar 10, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully

Polian is all talk and has no intentions of drafting a WR anywhere near that early. Seriously, there are plenty of offensive receivers on the Colts and the running game is a debacle. Invest in the OL & RB’s this early…it will help the passing game immensely.

by yellowsnow on Mar 10, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

The Colts will be fine getting someone at WR after the first, because they are likely to play the slot. Someone at DT, OLB, or RB would make more sense in my opinion. If we can have someone like Moreno, Wells, or Jennings the running game will improve immensely. As a result, Manning will have alot more options passing because we will actually have a running attack to fear along with him.

Personally

I have alot of faith in Mike Hart and Lance Ball coming on strong

Please, please draft a big Defensive Tackle. Please?

by skywalker on Mar 10, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope thats the case

I really liked Hart at Michigan and think he looked good from what we saw out of him. But if Addai is dealing with injuries again next year, our running game will be mediocre at best. If Moreno falls to the Colts, that would be a great pick In my opinion. I would be just as happy with a LB or DT in the first. But obviously it depends on the best value at 27

by ColtsPurdueFanFromKY on Mar 10, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was close to picking Moreno to the Colts

But I thought that the Eagles would take a back to go with Westbrook. The Jags signing Thomas changes everything though. This mock draft is already way out of date.

New England has three 2nd round picks?

How do they manage to have multiple picks year after year?
A deal with the devil?

by HoosierHorseman on Mar 10, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

close, the Cheifs and Chargers

The 33 pick for Cassel/Vrabel and the Chargers 2nd rounder this year and a 5th last year for a 3rd round pick last year (used on Jacob Hester).

Jeremy Maclin or Percy Harvin

I think it would be a good pickup if the Colts could get Maclin. The Colts really need a kick return game. Maclin would be a good boost and give us the best return guy we have had in some time. We ranked last, last year in return average. Imagine if Manning and co. started off at the average 35 yard line instead of the 24. That would be 11 less yards we would have to get. That could lead to more Touchdowns rather than FG.

by INDYCOLTSROCK18 on Mar 10, 2009 10:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

a good part of the crappy return game was that they couldn't keep a returnman for any amount of time

Rushing (IR’ed in preseason)
Roby (cut for roster space needed because of injuries)
Forsett (cut for roster space needed because of another wave of injuries)
Simpson (bad ankle)
Deuce Davenport (sucks)
Keiwan Ratliff (sucks at returns)

I wouldn't call any of them great returnmen though

In fact, I’d say the only one that could be considered “below average” would be Rushing. Simpson didn’t really impress me and he’s probably the second best on that list. Garcon showed flashes and he was a great returner in college. I mean, that’s what caught Polian’s attention to begin with. I think if Garcon is healthy, we could potentially give it to him and see what he could do with it if he was back there an entire season. I mean if you think about it, probably one of the best returners (over a short period of time but man when that was his thing, he was awesome) is Hester and he only scored a TD once every 13.4 returns. Garcon only had 23 returns, and Hester’s average shot up with a couple long returns. After that first year, Garcon has pretty much exactly the same return average. Guy’s goto have more chances as a returner to start showing his full bag of tricks.

And what’re you doing talking about rookie receivers and return dudes? New England got Leigh Bodden man. That dude was like the best man corner by a good margin behind Nnamdi. I didn’t think the Patriots were going to be able to fix that defense by next year so they’d suck, but now I’m not so sure. They could be seriously dangerous. Their amount of high round draft picks is scaring me. The Pats aren’t too shabby in the draft themselves, and they’re definitely getting a 3rd round pick for Samuel. They have THREE second round draft picks. They’re picking 4 dudes on day 1 and 6 in the first two rounds. They still might be a little ways away unless all their LBs they draft and safety pan out immediately. But the way the draft is starting to place players, they’re in really good position to pick up some players that fit them pretty well. Greg Lewis might actually have a chance to succeed in their system. They’re going to be dangerous.

Go talk about that, our return game is too depressing to talk about. We get it, it sucks. It’s the phase of the game where you say that, cross your arms, and looked pissed. I mean, I break down the return game by saying “Ca’t cover, can’t block, can’t run, can’t return.” Who the hell knows? Nobody even knows for sure who would end up being a great return man. Anytime anyone starts to shine as a returner, they yank them off and try to make them play a position. The days of Brian Mitchell and Dante Hall have passed, it’s kind of annoying. Returning is a talent, it takes a rare player to excel at it. And most of the time they’re not even that good at other positions, but they still stick them there until they get older and try to relive the glory by putting them back as a returner. But once that flash of phenomenal returning is gone, even for a second, it’s normally just that…gone. Hester will never be the same returner he once was. And they’ll probably do the same thing with Manningham. Hell, I’d be all for a Roy Hall and someone else for Manningham. Someone with potential and like Ball or something (and I dig them both) for him. Hell, I’d trade Bethea straight up to them and start Bullit for him. Well, actually, I would’ve done that for Hester. Returners are definitely lightning in a bottle. Hester was as sure as you could get. People gained 20-30 yards of field position because everyone was scared to kick to him, for good reason.

Sorry, tangent. Like I said, go talk about the Pats and how we’re going to be sneaky and crush them. I swear, am I the only one that gets cabin crazy every free agency period? It’s mind numbing. I just replied with 4 paragraphs in reply to something about the return game. What the hell?

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

Hopefully Detriot ruined Bodden my forcing him into zone in an awful D.

a legit Bodden along with Hobbs and Springs could match up on Wayne, Gonzo, Clark.

and Rushing was one of the best punt returners his rookie year. He was top 5 in return average and FO liked Indy’s punt return team.

L.T. redid his deal

It’s not a paycut either. They just converted his money and he has to earn it with incentives and a roster bonus in 2010. Less job security, more insulting than anything. But for this year it makes everyone happy.

And yes, I hope Detroit crushed Bodden’s will to play the game. And Rushing only had 19 returns, and had more kickoff returns than Garcon. I’m not knocking that because I agree, he was a good returner. But he popped a couple long ones that moved his numbers quite a bit. The way returns go, Garcon could’ve had a 90 yard TD and shot way up. I know he went to the sidelines a few times, but I liked his college film and he showed some of that returning. He had that “it” factor. I thought he was going to break a couple long ones more than once, and he almost did.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

Peria Jerry

It may have not said anything about the Colts visiting with Jerry, but remember, Polian did not have any contact with Gonzo prior to the draft and still took him. Gonzo even said that he was surprised that he was picked up by us for that reason. My guess, is that Polian believes, that he probably wont be available by the time the Colts choose.

Correct me if im wrong, but i remember Polian saying that in the first round, you have to pick the best player available no matter the position…would that statement change anything in that list? (that is if he said it of course)

Is there any chance...

for the Colts to pick Maualuga or Laurinaitis? Its just that i like those guys, prob is, we need OLBs and i dont know if they would even be a good fit.

1. Detroit Lions- Matt Stafford QB Georgia

3. Kansas City Chiefs Eugene Monroe OT Virgina
4 Seattle Seahawks Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

6 Cincinnati Bengals- Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
7. Oakland Raiders Jeremy Maclin, WR, Mizzou
8. Jacksonville Jaguars Jason Smith OT Baylor
9. Green Bay Packers – Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
10. San Francisco 49ers Everett Brown, DE, FSU
11. Buffalo Bills Andre Smith OT Alabama
12. Denver Broncos – B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College

Guess i missed it

I agree shake, i would be really happy hearing that “with the 27th pick, the all mighty colts select James Laurinaitis, Ohio” I would also love Maualuga or Jerry but since Maualuga wont drop, i prefer Laurinaitis over Peria.

I woul love to see Matthews, Cushing, or Laurinaitis.

If one of them were to drop, they could be our Zach Thomas for the next ten years. I love the idea of one of them in a Colts uniform. I would like that pick as much as Jerry or Moreno.

Yeah man, id love to see either Maualuga (although it wont happen) or Laurinaitis. Also Moreno would be a nice add, but id take Jerry first

Evander Hood

A guy I’ve been intrigued by lately is Evander Hood out of Mizzou. I don’t expect Jerry to be there, and I know Polian says he’ll go by BPA, but I’m starting to like him at #27.
