With the 1st Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Detroit selects...
Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
| 1. Detroit Lions | ||
|
Drafter: Coltsfanawalt Reasons for drafting: "Basically I think this team needs to leave "skill" positions alone early after their past few disastrous drafts. LT is deep this year and can be filled later. Raji or Curry are the best defensive choices for an 0-16 team with the worst defense in the league last season. Curry is a remarkable talent. My only hesitation is that they traded for Julian Peterson. I just believe they will trade out of this pick, possibly involving Cutler. If they pick here, Curry is their best choice." Coltsfanawalt also has a FanPost up further detailing why he picked Aaron Curry #1 overall. |

Curry might not have been who I would have picked, but it’s far from a bad pick.

Thanks.
Interesting observation at Pride of Detroit. The majority of the Lions fans there feel that Curry is the correct call. And they actually care about the team (which must be rough).

I saw that
You made a fine pick, and I’m VERY happy you reached out to the POD folks. Part of any mock is seeing who agrees or disagrees with a pick. For me, that’s 80% of the fun! I will likely be ROASTED for my Colts pick.

You are right, BBS.
Discussing the selections is 80% of the fun. I don’t mind any disagreement. I spent way too much time debating what to do and carefully studying the options. Every choice would invoke some disagreement, so that is no big thing. I just don’t think Stafford is the wise way to go there at all. The only other option was Raji or OT, and I think OT can be addressed as effectively later in the round.
Thanks for doing this. I am enjoying playing GM, and I have had a great time already learning about the Lions. We should do this every year. Maybe even later this offseason if draft spots are traded. It’s a great experience.

Another thing to note
If you get someone like Ziggy Hood to “fall in your lap” later in the draft, getting Curry and a player like Hood, or Brace, or someone that allows Curry to make plays, the overall draft grade for the Lions could be very high.

I dont know if he is the correct call or not (for me he is), i just know that picking Stafford isnt

I voted no
But it is not, by any means, a “bad” pick. I just don’t think a LB is a top overall pick. You build with QBs and linemen. That’s just my take. But Curry is a good pick, just not the one I agree with.

Agreed. He definitely screwed one of the other teams though, which made me laugh.

You are welcome, whoever is drafting for the Chiefs =p
I still expect that the Lions will deal out of this spot. If I could have done what I wanted in this mock draft, I would’ve negotiated for Cutler.

I would have been up for the negotiation
But there’s only one player I would give Cutler up for, and he isn’t on the Lions…

Yeah thanks I got the Chiefs

On the bright side,
I may have helped if you were choosing between two players. You weren’t? Oh.
You know, Matt Stafford is still on the board. Picture all the fun in KC with Thigpen, Cassel and Stafford all on the roster. How could you pass on that?

we can pile on one roster

About QB
I would agree if this were any other year. However, Stafford is way too risky and unworthy of the big money risk. As I stated in the fan post, they drafted Drew Stanton #43 overall two years ago. Before they declare him a draft bust, they ought to give it a shot. Is that any riskier than Stafford? I think not.
I expect that they can get a better QB in next year’s draft, wherever they draft in the first round. If they have that option and Stanton didn’t pan out, they can take it. If they draft Stafford, they are stuck with him for quite a while at very high price. Bad move from a poor draft class. By the way, they should deal for Cutler or Brady Quinn if they want a different QB right now. Both of those teams have reason to trade.

Seriously. They should definitely just wait until next year when Bradford will be eligible.

I voted no
because I don’t think the Lions should spend a first overall on a guy who won’t play his ideal position.
by CooperManningsNotTrying on Mar 24, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions
I voted no only because
of the rumors that the Lions are already in negotiations with Jason Smith. But based on what very little I know, it sounds like taking Curry would be an extraordinarily sound choice.
Yeah, I looked into that.
It seems they are talking seriously to a few players. As of yesterday, KFFL was mentioning the Smith negotiations with no source, so most people believed that it was only a rumor. Speculation. I don’t know if a better source came out today, as I have been too busy to look much. I don’t think anyone knows what they will do yet. All theory.

No trades, please
Keeping track of this, along with all the other SB Nation mock draft stuff I’m involved with, is hard enough. Trades just complicate things. The first year we did the SB Nation writers mock draft (in 2006) we allowed trades. It was a disaster. So please, no trades with our mock.

Hey, if we can I definitely want a redo!
I have repeatedly stated here and in my fanpost that the Lions should and may well trade out of #1.
If we go that route, I’d like to negotiate with the Cleveland and Denver drafters for scenarios on Cutler 3 way or even Quinn. I would want to get a redo in that case!

I don’t think anyone is going to trade for that first overrall. Not to mention you have 2 first rounders anyways. But that’s just me, I don’t want to speak for everyone.
But on second thought, if you want to take the 25th and give me the first I’m cool with that. =P

This throws off the whole draft. It will be fun. I was sort of hoping Curry would somehow drop to the Browns.

Great pick
As far as picks are concerned, they’re still prospects. Curry is the least risky prospect in the entire draft. Stafford could bust, and J. Smith is far from perfect. J. Smith’s ceiling is insane, but the higher your ceiling, the chance of being a huge letdown is also higher. Not to mention that the Lions second pick is still pretty high. They easily could get another one of the “elite” OTs in the first round. And who’s seriously going to make a run at the QBs? The Jets? Tampa Bay? This QB class is so weak I’m really not saying it’s impossible for them to get Curry, Stafford, and Beatty or Britton in the draft. But Curry would definitely not make it out of the top 10. And the dropoff from Curry to the next best LB is much greater than the dropoff at any other position by far. Not to mention they have Culpepper. All drafting Stafford first overall would’ve done was allow me to get my “bust” stamp out early. Nothing against him, on the right team he could have a great career. But the “Let’s put this awesome dude on the worst team in the league and hope other dudes slip because we don’t have them on our team” doesn’t generally work out.
Love the pick. Hard pick to make. My decision would’ve come down to Raji or Curry. I think I might’ve gone with Raji though personally. Especially knowing that he’d have Schwartz there to coach him to his full potential. That I might be a little biased because I’d want Raji off the board so the Jags can’t get him. Although, skipping the OTs makes taking one of them almost certain.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
Thank you.
Very well said. That is exactly my view. And I am second guessing my passing on Raji. I think that Curry is the better player, but Raji is the bigger need for the Lions in particular, as they traded a DT (Redding) for a LB (Peterson) already. Plus Schwartz might be looking for his Haynesworth. I just chose the best player and the one the Lions fans liked.
You make the point about Stafford very well. I think that a lot of teams hope that teams like the Lions and Raiders make stupid choices to help get the players they want to slide to them better. Stafford is the “sound” choice to the fans of other teams who wouldn’t want to draft him that high. Detroit might go that route, but I think they would be making a statement that they still don’t know how to draft post-Millen.
And OT is deep. Thanks again for the input.

I agree
I wanted to say bad pick because I wanted him to fall to my Browns pick. Ah well. I am a big Curry fan. Stafford scares me but I’m not sure why. I’m just getting a bust vibe from him. Jason Smith and Aaron Curry are the two best picks for the Lions.

You think he would've made it to five?
If so, that would be a great slide for Cleveland. I think KC will be as far as he gets in the actual draft. By the way, since you follow Clevland/Brady Quinn, do you think Edwards will land elsewhere? I’m hearing rumors.
