With the 3rd Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, Kansas City selects...
Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
| 3. Kansas City Chiefs | ||
|
Drafter: Colteyes Reasons for drafting: "While there are many needs for the Chiefs, the two that stick out most are getting to the quarterback and protecting the quarterback. So the good thing is Kansas City has the option of taking the best player available and plugging them in to better their team. With Aaron Curry already being taken by Detroit, and Chiefs fans thinking Jason Smith would be off the board before their pick. The Chiefs will have no choice but to take Smith to help give their brand new asset, Matt Cassell, some protection. Crabtree could also be another option here opposite of Dwayne Bowe, but I think protecting the quarterback is far more important. A pass rusher like Orakpo or Brown could be an option, but this may be a bit high for them. Also taking into account Scott Pioli loves to build his teams from the inside out, so the choice for the Kansas City Chiefs is Jason Smith." |

There you go
Keep that poll system. Only took 3 tries.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

Oh come on
I can’t be the only one that put I think they could go in a different direction. I mean Orakpo is just sitting there chilling. They take Orakpo then Chris Baker or Taylor along with Vrabel and Dorsey as an end? Boom, there’s your core for a 3-4. Making their defense better than swiss cheese would as much or more to stop the pass rush than Smith would by himself. Doesn’t matter if KC scores 50 points if the other team scores 70 and they’re playing from behind the entire game.
I agree with the pick, I’m just saying that’s why I could see them going in another direction. Maybe this’ll convince someone to click that box so I don’t look lame. Come on, you know you want to. Go on, click it.

You know
Even though I made the pick I absolutely picked they could go in a different direction because I considered Orakpo but I don’t think he’s worthy of #3. Also with Smith a potential #1 how can you pass that up when it’s also a need?
It's not that I'm lazy, Bob, it's just that I don't care

I thought
The chiefs drafted Albert last year to play left tackle.

I know
But they spent a high pick on him (pick 16? off the top of my head) didn’t they, and intended him to play tackle, little early to give up on him? don’t ya think?

Who's giving up?
You know what is better than 1 first round pick on your ageing line?
Give up?
Two first round picks on your line.
Also Monstersbox, the opposite can be said about your statement. If the defense becomes so good that they only allow 3 points a game then that is freakin awesome but it wont do squat if cassel can stay off his back. kc’s line fell apart like a couple of seasons ago because of all the retirements (like 2 i think). Their o-line was old and its time to get younger. I prefer to think that the o-line is THE most underrated position in ALL of sports. I definitely like this pick
Please, please draft a big Defensive Tackle. Please?

Wasn't saying it'd be my pick
Just saying I could also see them taking someone on defense for the 3-4 transition. I do know one thing though, 10 sacks for the entire season is pretty terrible. Especially considering they took Dorsey at 5 last year. And switching to a 3-4 from a T2 when you don’t even have the right players to run that? That’s like taking the Colts, taking away Sanders, Bethea, Freeney, and Mathis and saying “Go get Vrabel and switch to a 3-4”. And knowing Pioli and the Patriots, he may build that defense before he goes offense. Unless he’s trying to win this year and wants to take advantage of Gonzalez’s last couple of seasons. There’s more potential and they’re much younger on defense. There’s better players on offense, but they’re older and some don’t have much left.
If I were the Chiefs, I would’ve jumped at trading Cassel for a first round pick. Thigpen did a put them in position to win several times last year. If it wasn’t for their terrible defense, they would’ve finished better. The Chiefs are what the Colts were a few years ago minus pass rushers. Yeah, that’s pretty bad. At least we had a pass rush.
I would’ve taken Smith myself, but I’m just saying I could see them going in a different direction. I think Oher or Monroe may not have the ceiling but they’re a safer pick. But hey, when you’re as bad as they were, go for broke. What’s the worst that’s going to happen? Pioli has that gig until he wants to quit.
