Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by Head Coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful. A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos. We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded

oh and
McDaniels is fucking up.
Cutler is a young top 10 QB. McDaniels deserves to sink with some rookie bust or a free agent retread this season.

Re
Cutler has certainly looked like a whiny brat throughout this, but he won. Another team will get a top 10-15 QB, and the Broncos will be stuck with a coach with little confidence around him and who the hell knows at QB.

No he's not
Granted, that’s your opinion, but this is way bigger than Cutler just not wanting to play for the Broncos because he’s throwing a fit. What happens if Cutler has a Tom Brady injury the first week of the season? Poof, gone. What happened to Culpepper when he jacked up his knee? Poof. You put your health at risk every time you step on the field. If your HC, and your OWNER who just hired that coach after firing a potential HoF coach on a whim, don’t have faith in you and could trade you at any point, hell yeah I’d want out. They won’t say anything more than “He’s our QB for this year. He’s under contract.” Yeah, McDaniels fucked up. It all could’ve been nothing but a mistake, but McDaniels refused any fault. Now granted, that’s his choice to go after Cassel, which is retarded in the first place, but eat some humble pie and don’t come into a new city younger than half your players with your guns blazing.
Cutler’s value is at its peak right now. If he doesn’t feel comfortable with his future, and I can’t see how he could, go find a team that appreciates you. If anything, Bowlen looks like the idiot out of all three of them here. I could see where McDaniels doesn’t want to lose face, and I can see why Cutler wants more than just a “Go get ‘em Tiger! We didn’t just try to trade you!”. But Bowlen’s the one that could’ve diffused the situation.

Cutler just wanted out
As soon as Shanahan was let go, Cutler decided he didn’t want to be a Bronco anymore. That’s it.
There’s no other explanation as to why this whole thing blew up like it did to the point of irreconcilable differences. Cutler refusing to have an honest heart-to-heart with McDaniels, instead of the two he had with ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, just underscores how he had no interest in working anything out from the beginning. The trade excuse was ludicrous because he asked to be traded before any rumors leaked out about Cassel. Just a huge mess.

I just want him to land someplace so the media will let the story die. I really don’t like these Brett Favre-esque offseasons. ugh!

Spin
If Cutler had asked to be traded, it would’ve been in the news. Period. Cutler was the one that broke the story about McDaniels attempting to trade him. Bowlen apparently said the offensive system would remain unchanged. It didn’t. McDaniels straight up told everyone that he did want Cassel, and it was a business decision. Why would he say that if Cutler asked for the trade? They tried to place the blame on Cutler to make it look like he was being a dick. That sequence of events doesn’t make any sense. So Cutler asks for a trade. Then Bowlen hires McDaniels. Then McDaniels, who doesn’t know Cutler wants a trade, pursues Cassel. It doesn’t go through. Then Cutler gets pissed because he asked for a trade but McDaniels didn’t know he asked for a trade? That’s not even remotely logical.
Like I said, if Cutler asked for a trade and the Lions were pursuing him at Cutler’s request, it would’ve been in the news prior to the meltdown. So not only is Bowlen an egotistical dick, but he’s a liar too.
Explain to me how you think it went down.

Cutler could have (and probably should have) played the good soldier and let it go
but no matter who you think is to blame for the situation getting that ugly. McDaniels is at fault for starting it and ultimately, the Broncos no longer having a franchise QB.
He shouldn’t have been shopping a young top 10 QB to replace him with a more expensive, and inferior QB that McDaniel’s knows.

lie, bury it in coach speak, play it down, do something besides telling him “You’ll be shopped and you’ll like it!”

Shake...
I think this is a big indictment of McDaniel’s ability to lead. He is too young…and by wanting Cassel (who is no more than his security blanket) he is showing his inexperience!! Ultimately this is McDaniels fault no matter how baby like Cutler acts. McDaniel is the leader of the team and he has completely screwed this up. He can rot in a sack for all I care!!

Just curious
How do you handle a Cutler-type? Baby him? There are plenty of high-maintenance players in the NFL but a player can only be “handled” if he allows himself to be handled. Cutler, I think, would have found fault with something else if it wasn’t for the trade rumors. He didn’t want to be a good doobie under the new regime, without Shanahan and without his QB coach.

I agree
There are only 2, possibly 3 QBs that I can think of who have earned the right not to be shopped. Peyton, Tommy Boy and possibly Eli. I don’t even think that Romo, Rivers or Cutler fit in that bunch.
It must be April Fool’s Day…you are making alot of sense to me today, Marima :)

Ok
So Denver’s getting what they want and so is Cutler. Since they didn’t want Cutler, and they wanted to trade him in the first place, nobody’s the villain here. So it’s not a big deal.
I’m trying to figure out the logic that Cutler’s the dick here.
Bowlen : “Do whatever you see fit Josh.”
McDaniels : “Well I think we should try to trade Jay.”
Bowlen : “You’re the boss.”
Denver fails at trading Cutler, Cutler finds out
Cutler : “Um, you guys just tried to trade me?”
McDaniels : “Yep. I wanted my guy. And I’ll still trade you if I see fit.”
Cutler : “That’s kind of a dick thing to do isn’t it? I mean I understand, but I found out from a 3rd party source calling to "check out the goods.”
Bowlen : “Shut up Jay. Do what he says. He’s the boss.”
Cutler : “Ok, well am I your QB or not?”
McDaniels : “You’re under contract, so yeah.”
Cutler : “Well I might be out of line, but that’s not really giving me a ton of confidence. If I go out and blow my knee out, you can just kick me to the curb. Could we talk about an extension?”
McDaniels : “You’re our QB.”
Cutler : “What’s that mean? Are you still considering trading me? Could we talk about an extension?”
McDaniels : “All options are open. Nobody is exempt from a trade. And no, we won’t talk about extending at this time.”
Cutler : “Well, I’d like you to pursue a trade if you can’t give me anything more than "You’re our QB for this year because you’re under contract.”
McDaniels : “STOP BEING A DICK!”
Cutler : “I don’t think I’m being a dick. All I know is the owner fired the HC, totally changed the offense, you guys have done pretty much nothing on the defensive side of the ball, and now you’re completely changing the offensive system. I don’t think I can fully buy into a coach who I don’t think knows what he’s doing. So as opposed to going through the motions, maybe you should get a QB that wants to buy into this circus.”
McDaniels : “DICK!”
Cutler : “Whatever, just trade me.”
I’m not naive, I think Cutler is arrogant and I’m not saying he’s without fault in the situation. But he’s certainly not the only one to blame. And I think he’s the only one telling the truth. The NFL’s a business, and Cutler’s an employee. But if they did what they did to him to me at work, you bet I’d be looking for another job. These aren’t possessions we’re talking about.
I’m allowed to have emotions and feelings and be able to quit a job when I want, you are, your friends are, your family is, but NFL players should suck it up and be a good boy and dance when we say dance? Yeah, Cutler is lucky to be an NFL player. But he was blessed with the talent and put in the work to be in a position where he can have some leverage towards his future. He won’t have the same leverage next season if the new offensive system fails, he has a 60 QB rating and gets benched. Or if he gets hurt.
Just because the T.O.s and Peppers’ of the league make it always seem like the players at fault doesn’t mean it’s the case in every situation. I read the steaming pile of crap in the Harrison story a few days ago. Seriously, people need to stop blaming players for everything. So now everyone’s outraged that Marvin didn’t completely restructure his deal to remain a Colt? How does anyone even know what his contract is? He easily could have pushed his roster bonus money forward and be pissed because they not only want to decrease his salary, but they aren’t paying him what he should have already been paid. But now Marvin, one of the faces of the Colts for over a decade is now a dick for not taking a new deal? Yeah, that makes sense. NFL players are not items to be purchased or dogs. They’re people just like anyone here. They do what they do for our entertainment.

Cutler isn't the only one at fault
What I can’t understand is how it went downhill so fast. It’s already been substantiated that McDaniels didn’t initiate the phone calls about a trade, but he did entertain them for a brief, fateful, period. Frankly, I just don’t see how that is wrong. What player is so untouchable that a coach can’t even bring up his name? What coach wouldn’t be remiss in considering any and all possibilities that might improve his team? He doesn’t have to act on anything, but he should always be open to what’s being offered.
Peter King was the one who broke the story about Cutler asking for a trade after Shanahan and Bates left Denver.
I reported recently that Cutler wanted to be traded after the Broncos lost both Mike Shanahan (fired) and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates (went to USC as offensive coordinator), and that message was delivered to the Denver front office. Now I expect Cutler, through agent Bus Cook, to reiterate his demand … and what’s more, I expect the Broncos to seriously consider it.
Your point about players being purchased like dogs is off the mark. Players know what the industry is when they sign up, or at least they should know. The percentage of players that have played for multiple teams – whether by choice or by trade or through free agency – is higher than ever and it’s pretty rare to find players who still suit up for the team that drafted them. I don’t know of many untouchable workers anywhere in this economy, no matter how many years they’ve had with the company. It’s a different world than the NFL, but team loyalty – like company loyalty only works when life is good and everyone is fat and happy.
Keep the faith!

First off
I wouldn’t believe anything coming out of Peter King’s mouth. I could be on fire, he could say “Hey dude, you’re on fire.” and I still wouldn’t believe him. And you’re right, players know what they’re getting into, Cutler also knows that he has huge leverage right now. More power to him for calling out his franchise on idiotic moves and wanting to leave. The fact is, he’s good enough that he can do that. Otherwise they would’ve released him already.
And the source of whomever broke the story was Cutler. And it went downhill fast because McDaniels idea of a coach is one that doesn’t take BS from anyone and he’s the MAN. That’s how BB is, and that was his exposure to how he believes a HC should be. The difference is, McDaniels is not, nor will he ever be, BB. Some players need an iron fist, and some don’t. Any boss that treats every employee exactly the same is a poor boss. Bowlen didn’t want to back Cutler because it would make firing Shanahan seem even more idiotic than it was. McDaniels wanted to be seen as someone who doesn’t take crap from anybody, no matter who it was. And Cutler wanted an apology and assurance that he could focus on football and not have to worry about next season.
Like I said, I see Cutler and McDaniels side. The one thing everyone keeps ignoring though is that Bowlen put this all into action and continued to throw gasoline instead of water on the situation. I guess Bowlen’s proving that you don’t mess with a rich dude that’s used to getting his way. Too bad his team is going to suck ass. But he sure showed Shannahan and Cutler!

Regardless
of whether you believe King or not, neither Cutler nor Cook has disputed his claim. And what leverage does Cutler actually have? McDaniels now has control over where he goes and which city he goes to. Does Cutler want to play for the Lions or the Redskins? He’s not really operating from a position of strength, since he’s under contract with Denver.
Keep the faith!

That's...
Exactly what Denver thought about Plummer. And then he retired. Not saying Cutler’s going to retire, but he could sit out. Not to mention I don’t think he cares where he goes. Hell, I think he’d be happy to go to Detroit. You don’t get a receiver like Calvin Johnson and that many draft picks that often. It’s not like Denver was stellar. Maybe he just wants to go to a team that actually gives him a “You’re our QB, we back you bud.”
Either way, I really don’t care enough about Cutler or Denver to discuss this any further.

I hate his dad, but
I have always thought Chris Simms was a decent to good QB. He was probably the best of the three Titans QBs last season. I felt bad for him having to be behind Young on the depth chart.
All the down time since the injury has probably stunted his development, but Denver could do a lot worse. I still think he should’ve signed with the Jets. He would’ve done well there.
