Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has been invited to join a White House faith-based advisory council.

Dungy publicist Todd Starowitz confirmed Tuesday that President Barack Obama had invited the former coach to join the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He said Dungy had not decided whether to accept.

I hate this idea.

Dungy should not lend his hard-earned credibility to a shallow self-absorbed creep bluffing his way through life and never working to understand anything or produce anything real. The parasite will profit from the comparison at Dungy’s expense.

I'm not one to get into online political fights, but...

Regardless of what you think of his politics, Obama has worked hard to get to where he is. He earned his way into good schools and excelled while there, turned down big corporate lawyer money to help poor people in Chicago and from all accounts is more willing to listen to other people than any other president in recent history.

Again, you can hate his politics all you want, but the man has worked as hard or harder than any of us to get to where he is.

His politics are the problem.

He is not qualified to run the country and thinks if he is visible (talking out of his ass) we will all be fooled. It might have been nice if he knew what was actually in “his” stimulus bill prior to insisting it be passed..,and that’s only one example. I am praying this country can take a 4 year term with him at the helm – particularly given our economic situation.

It’s ridicules ;)

I apologize, this isn’t a poltical blog, I should go on over to Lou Dobbs for that.

That's fine

We’re all on here to discuss Colts and there’s no reason to discuss politics. Personally, I keep myself very informed of what is going on in the world and I agree with Obama a whole lot more than I agreed with Bush. But that’s besides the point. I merely took umbrage at the suggestion that the man has spent his life “bluffing” and “not working”.

You can hate everything he stands for and there are plenty of political arenas to yell and shout about it but to suggest that he has not spent his life working hard is beyond ridiculous.

Okay

First you watch Lou Dobbs so that explains a lot (you made it too easy there).

Second, the original poster posted something that was non-partisan in nature so I expect you and everyone else to return that favor. If you can’t act like a grown up then please do us all a favor and keep your opinions to yourself. You don’t see BBS, myself, King Richard, Shake and the others firing off partisan comments about the President (be it Bush or Obama).

That is the standard that is set here on SBNation even though SBNation was started by the guy that started this website… www.dailykos.com. Bottom line is we are here to talk sports and if you don’t like it you can go over to Dobbs, Beck or whatever yahoo you listen to.

It really pisses me off that MAPatsFan posts something totally non-partisan and then you just tear into it. Totally disrespectful.

by MasterRWayne on Apr 1, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Relax.

I didn’t tear into anyone. You may want to re-read what I posted. For that matter, delete it or whatever you want to do. I have already apologized for posting a political comment on this blog.

Oh, and regarding Non-Partisan…I’m an independant – don’t make assumptions.

Oh, and the original poster’s comments were personal attacks on the President – MUCH better than politcal ones.

Perhaps you didn’t tear into anyone but you weren’t far off. But when it comes to stuff we all disagree on, apologies are the best we can get, so I thank you for that.

As for being partisan or not, that word has nothing to do with being independent or not. It just refers to being a “proponent of a party, cause, faction, person, or idea”.

You’re right though in that the first commenter is much further off base on what’s okay on this blog.

We all love the Colts, right? Good. And regardless of politics, how many NFL coaches command the national respect outside football necessary to even be considered for a political opportunity. I guess Belichick would probably be pretty good at the CIA or NSA with all the spying they do (Pats spying jokes NEVER get old)

I agree.

As a matter of fact, when I first read this story yesterday I was going to post it. Because regardless of politics, its an opportunity for Dungy to do some good-something we’re all used to him doing.

I was absolutely wrong for posting my rant. This is not the appropriate place.

I mean this as an olive branch.

Dungy is definitely unique among NFL coaches in the national respect that he has earned, and future discussions about him are going to have less and less to do with football. As Colts fans, we know better than most that this is the way he wants it to be. But if he wants to advise policy makers about how to intervene in or regulate private life instead of continuing to encourage, support, and embody his own values, he should realize the fundamental consequences of that decision. Neither he nor any Colts fan should be surprised if discussions of him instantly become discussions of politics, because he would have chosen the political and forceful path to change instead of the private and intellectual path, down which his progress and record have already earned him so much respect.

That said, the only point of an advisory council on faith-based anything is to affect policy and thereby dictate life in society without changing the culture or reasoning with people as individuals. As a Colts fan and a Dungy fan, it would be hugely disappointing to see him succumb to that temptation regardless of whose policies ultimately get implemented.

Independent means squat

I have a good family friend who says he is an “independent” but if you talk to him he is so far off the deep end politically its downright scary. You can claim to be anything you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that you just launched into a pre-emptive political attack on a SPORTS blog. My post was directed at both you and LukeM just so you know.

I think its also important to note that President Obama extended the same offer that Bush extended to Dungy. The original post was completely non-partisan. Are you so political insecure as to just attack like some wild frenzied dog whenever someone mentions “Obama.” Sad. Really sad.

Your apology is accepted, but don’t let it happen again please.
