COLTS BIG BOARD: FINAL DRAFT RANKINGS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR READING THIS DRAFT BOARD

This draft board is a combination of what I think the Colts Front Office draft board could actually look like and my personal opinions about the players in the draft.  Accordingly, some players you will find on the board may only be listed because the Colts have shown direct interest, while other players who the Colts have shown direct interest in may not be included based on my own assessment.  Additionally, some players' values may seem higher or lower than what you would expect, and that is based on my own assessment as well.

As you are reading this draft board it is best to look at players near the top of the list not only as the players I see as potential MVPAs in the given round but also as the players which will be less likely to be available at that pick.  The further you move down each list, the more likely the player will be available when we select (generally speaking).  In order to save space, you should read that players at the bottom of one round are at the top of the following round (I did not list the same player twice).  A bottom second round MVPA for the Colts would beat out the top listed third round MVPA (and so forth).

As with any draft board, as players in a given position are selected, the "need" of that position will like lower, resulting in a shift of the lists in following rounds (generally speaking).  Accordingly, just because there are three DTs as top MVPA three rounds in a row does not mean that the Colts would choose to pick three DTs, when the second or third MVPA in each of those rounds would fill another, now higher position of need.

I will be making up another Ultimate Mock Draft soon.  This will give you an idea what players might be discussed in my upcoming Ultimate Mock Draft.  I would be interested in hearing your thoughts or which players you would add or subtract from the list.  Sorry it is so long but I hope you enjoy reading it.

I liked most of your picks except Shonn Greene, Ian Johnson, and Graham Harrell. I think Shonn Greene might be a good back, but he’s far too untested in the passing game to be a Colts back. Ian Johnson and Graham Harrell define system players. I don’t think either one of these guys are going to be worth much if anything in the NFL.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.
Oh and I write words and stuff for Stampede Blue.

You could say that but....

Drew Brees and Steve Slaton are two players that came from “systems” that were slighted for either measurables or some other slight flaw in their game. I think Graham Harrell in the sixth, if no other player that fits our needs at that value is available, is a steal. I lived in Arlington, TX for the past two years and saw a lot of Texas Tech games, and the kid has skills – even if he is only 6’0". Ian Johnson on the other hand, I’m not as sold on but who knows.

I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

My favorite part is the draft needs. I like how you listed them but with conditions like a DT needing to be one who could start right away. It means a lot more when talking about needs to be specific about not just the position but what you want out of the position.

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

Nice

A list like this is more fun to have on draft day. Mock drafts, in contrast, can be worthless after the first round when all of the missed picks start snowballing. It will be neat to watch for guys who get left behind on this list as the draft moves on and guys who picked way ahead of time.

Nice work again bamock. I love the board for the most part. I was a little surprised to see a guy like Harvin so high in your first round board given recent concerns raised over possible drug taking and general character concerns, however, I love this guy and could see him becoming a true NFL star if he stays healthy. He would add a new dimension to our offense, we have two great receivers in wayne and gonzo but they’re not exactly electric. This guy has phenomenal speed, combine that with his agility and the fluidity with which he moves and there is potential for greatness there. When I think about Harvin in a colts uniform, well I just get very comfortable (can’t remember what movie that’s a line from?). Anyway, he is the player amongst all those you listed, that gets my pulse racing the most, the question is would an exciting pick like this or maybe a more conservative pick like ziggy help us win more games…. And that’s why we have Bill Polian

Just a few thoughts

1st Round :
- Pretty much exactly how I’d rank them, but I’d actually put Pettigrew at 9 after seeing the breakdown of our line and knowing he would be a pretty significant upgrade blocking wise and would also be an upgrade receiving wise by allowing Dallas to slide to the slot in 3 WR sets and still have a large, physical redzone threat that we haven’t had for awhile.

2nd Round :
-I’d put William Moore in the 2nd round ranked 3rd or 4th. Moore is honestly probably one of the best prospects as a WILL for us.
- I’d probably swap Moala with Brace.
- I think you have Williams ranked a full round too high
- Probably have to put LeSean McCoy and D. Brown both ranked ahead of Jennings on the off chance they fall

3rd Round:
- I’d put Marks probably at the top or 2nd in round 3, he’d be good value there
- I’d probably put Chris Baker and Dorell Scott at 7 and 8 for round 3, Baker would be higher if he hadn’t been arrested
- I’d put Troy Kropog in round 3 ahead of Magee
- I’d take Ramses Barden before Shonn Greene
- I’d seriously consider putting Pat White somewhere at the bottom of your third round ranking. If we’re looking at QBs, may as well get the one that’s looked the best and might also be able to play receiver. If he’s taught right, he could be a great QB in a few years.

4th Round:
- Fenuki Tupou would be a steal
- I’d probably put Cedric Peerman where you have Sheets, Sheets where Coffee is, and Coffee at the top of the 5th

5th Round:
- I’d put Brandon Long at the top of the 5th and try to hit on another 5th round DE as good depth and an eventual starter.

6th Round:
- I think you have Butler ranked 2 rounds too low. I’d put him behind Bruton in round 4.

7th Round:
- Who cares?

Anyway, just my thoughts. Take it for what it’s worth.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

I appreciate your insights. I will look into some of your thoughts. Some of them we’ll probably just disagree on where to rate the player(s). I didn’t include every possible prospect in this list, maybe the final version of it before draft day will be more “all-inclusive”. That said, I don’t think all prospects are actually targetted by the Colts FO and I did my best to figure out which players will grab their interest v. which Armchair GMs such as we might see value in but won’t really grab the attention of the FO.

Anyway, I can’t possibly know all things about all prospects so I will research some of the names you’ve listed that I have not included.

Thanks Monstersbox.

Uh

I wouldn’t have put them in if I didn’t think they’d fit on the Colts. I’m just going to stop posting on these mocks and crap asking for insight. Seems to me everyone takes it as criticism and wants to defend their choices. Which is fine, but don’t put up “I would be interested in hearing your thoughts or which players you would add or subtract from the list.” and then say I don’t know who’d fit on the Colts.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

???

I don’t understand why what I said to you was taken as though I took your comments and insights as criticisms. I truly appreciate your insight, and to be frank, value YOUR OPINION as much as anyone’s on this site. I am not claiming that you don’t know who would fit on the Colts, I don’t even know where in my response I could have insinuated that.

To be clear, THANK YOU for your insights Monstersbox, the players you have mentioned that I have not included deserve my thorough research because in most cases, the players you’ve mentioned and potential changes you’ve suggested are not something I could argue well based on my own personal knowledge. Please do not stop responding to posts when I ask for insights because, unlike others who post here (who feel it necessary to shove their opinions down everyone’s throats, insulting their opinions and/or intelligence if they disagree), I do appreciate it, do read it, and do use the insight moving forward to develop my opinion and alter future posts.

I look to enrich my knowledge of the Colts and players which the Colts may value any chance I get. I think you’re someone who can help me and others do that. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding.

how about...

…Nick Reed out of Oregon in the 5th/6th for a little pass rush depth / potential for grooming at OLB?

I'll look into it...

I might put up a final version of this big board sometime a day or two before the draft for fun.

Good Job

I know Monsterbox touched on this a little bit, but if the Colts were looking for a DT in the later rounds like the 3rd…I probably would have slotted Vance Walker out of GT somewhere along with Dorell Scott. Also, any potential for CB Victor Harris out of VT maybe between rounds 2-4 (not sure) for the Colts. I know his 40 time was pretty bad, but if he falls somewhat, I think the Colts could strongly consider him. Besides his 40 time (Hughes had a slow time also), he fits that Colt CB style and also performed well throughout his college career. With Jackson and Jennings becoming FAs and possibly not resigned next season, drafting a CB could contend for the second or third spot that year..

Another Rec

Liked and agreed with your needs section, almost scary how I agree with most of what you post. One disagreement on the first round board, can’t get my head around Clay Mathews in the Colts system. I think he is a project WILL, as his college experience is as a standup DE. Not that I don’t think he will be successful, I just don’t like a project in the first round. I have watched Clay since his Pop Warner days, as my son played against him through High School. He is probably one of the hardest workers around.

by tim55 on Apr 14, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

I agree re: Matthews...

That’s why I have him so low… in fact Sean Smith should probably be ahead of him. However, I know the Colts have showed interest in him either an interviews or private meeting of some kind. Accordingly, I included him on the list.

by bamock on Apr 14, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I love Sean Smith

but the reports I’ve seen say he’s great in man and has struggled in zone.

That may be...

But a guy his size, with his range, and ball skills in the middle of a zone coverage scheme with nickel like responsibilities sounds dangerous for opposing QBs. Additionally, the value he’d bring covering bigger receiver like Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, and others would be huge for the Colts who struggle against bigger receiver regularly. The anti-Vincent Jackson we’d need to help shut down Rivers and the Chargers. I can dream anyway.

by bamock on Apr 14, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

an Anti-Vincent Jackson would be nice

since Jackson is a legit WR now instead of a big tall fast guy.

Harvin

I’m sure this has been talked to death on other threads but I just can’t see Polian taking a flier on Harvin with his character issues. I just saw an article (somewhere that I know can’t find) where scouts were polled about the players with the biggest character question marks. Harvin showed up on everyone’s list. His 12 on the wonderlic tends to compound that assessment. I couldn’t agree more with the rest of your first round not that I’m a big draftnik but that one stood out to me.

by Rob-Westside on Apr 14, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

I also agree with you Rob...

That Harvin’s character concerns could be reason for Polian to pass on him, even if he’s available. Where I’m less certain and the reason he’s listed so high is for the following: 1) Outside of speculated character concerns, I was not aware of Harvin having any noted character issues until the “report” came out that he was one of a handful of players who failed the Combine drug testing. If that is untrue, how much of the rest of the rumors about his character are untrue? I wouldn’t know, Polian probably does. 2) If Polian does know the character concerns, whether they’re legit or media/rumor inspired, Harvin’s abilities and ability to produce in multiple ways on a football field make him one of the highest possible MVPA for the Colts in the 1st Round.

So… if 1 is legit, there are actual character problems. He’d slide on my list, probably off of it altogether. If there aren’t character concerns or they are shown to be illegitimate, his value as a player has to be pretty high in the First Round with the 27th pick.

by bamock on Apr 14, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Please show me where in the following quote you can find a single “character concern”:

1) WR Percy Harvin, Florida (Jr.)
The first player mentioned by all five executives, Harvin is the clear-cut favorite in this year’s draft class to find trouble after receiving a giant payday. He was very competitive at Florida, even battling through a broken bone in his foot that was publicly referred to as a sprained ankle, helping the Gators win two national championships the past three years. The mention of character concerns about Harvin drew outrage from ardent supporters of Gator Nation after PFW’s 2009 Draft Guide was released. Nonetheless, one executive said Harvin would have to slip to the fourth round for him to consider rolling the dice on Harvin’s character. Two others said they would not entertain the idea of drafting him at any price. Coachability, a posse of hangers-on, his lack of respect for authority and drug usage made Harvin a unanimous selection to become a repeated problem in the pros.

I don’t see a single example of how Harvin has “character concerns.” Just because some douche writer makes an article about it saying so and so has a character concerns and a bunch of anonymous NFL “execs” support that doesn’t make it true.

Again I ask, what character concerns am I missing here?

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Btw, I guess I should have added this so I don’t look stupid. I see at the end they say he has a lack of respect for authority and has a history of drug usage and all that, but I’ve followed the guy since he became a gator and I’ve never heard about any of his attitude problems. I have heard nothing but good things about his attitude and his work ethic. As for the drug thing, obviously it was stupid of him to smoke before going to the combine since he knew for the longest time he was going to go, I just think everyone is making a bigger deal about it than needs to be. Unless the guy gets pulled over for driving blazed, or drunk, or anything like that, I’m not worried about it.

The drug tests

Were false. I’m not saying he didn’t get something later that said he failed the drug test, but the one that had him, Raji, Davis, Cushing and Matthews were fabricated. I’m seriously really starting to think somebody’s trying to make his stock drop. Seems like they’re going out of their way.

They were?

I have not yet seen anything that said those guys didn’t test positive or otherwise. Needless to say, I am very happy that it is false. As a father with a son I am always very excited at draft time as it is such a happy time for these kids to finally realize their dreams. It is very upsetting that someone would fabricate this type of negativity. Anyway, I wish all those guys the best of luck no matter where they land.

Juaquin Iglesias, Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard

I’d like to see these guys listed. Did you leave them off for a reason? All three seem like they could be playmakers in the slot.

by CooperManningsNotTrying on Apr 19, 2009 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

I tried...

To cut down the list and only include the group of players who could be available at each position who I thought would be worthy of a pick. Those players may fit somewhere in the Colts system but were not the ones I though would be best with each of our picks. However, I will do some research on those players before the final version of this list is posted later this week.

Inglesias

Inglesias is good value in round 2. I’d consider him at about the same level and upside as Robiskie. Soft hands, good routes, not going to burn you, can contribute early, ceiling above average but chance to hit ceiling is higher than most. I’d put him above Williams in the second, but not much.
