With the 23rd Pick in the 2009 Stampede Blue Community Mock Draft, New England selects...

Sbmockdraftlogo_medium

Alex Mack, C, California

23. New England Patriots
NFL TEAM

Drafter: MaPatsFan

Reasons for drafting: "Everyone's gonna scratch their heads on this one - let me explain. The Patriots defensive backfield struggled in 2008 and maybe struggled is being kind. When our star CB is Ellis Hobbs, you have to wonder what's going on. Belichick and crew had a busy FA offseason picking up Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs - not superstars, but I'm less worried about the position than I was a few months ago. OLB could use an elite rookie to groom, but they've all been taken prior to 23; the rest are clear second rounders and we can wait on that position while most likely starters Adalius Thomas and Pierre Woods hold down the fort. With the eventual departure of Rodney Harrison, safety could be a concern, but not a first round concern; Meriweather is back, Tank Williams is healthy, and James Sanders is signed."

Where’s the “No I’m not happy about the Pats drafting Mack and I hope he is a bust” option?

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.
Oh and I write words and stuff for Stampede Blue.

Come on

MaPatsFan did this out of the kindness of his heart.

And he already knows we ALL want their picks to bust. ;)

I, for one...

Am thrilled. One less guy I have to worry about us drafting that doesn’t help resolve one of the team’s biggest needs. GO MAPATSFAN. For one day, yer my hero.

The seems to make some sense

but not entirely. Can you give me the rhe reason for taking Mack MaPatsFan? you provided info on why you didnt take some of the positions of need, but not exactly what Mack offers to the Patriots.

I got a little long winded in my note to BBS, here's the rest

So, why a center? Belichick won’t put him at center. He’ll slide him over to guard. Both Stephen Neal and Logan Mankins are in the final year of their contracts and we need to get some young blood into the offensive line. Remember Super Bowl XLII? Most of you were cheering while I didn’t sleep for two days. The OL spent the 2008 off-season recuperating and nursing injuries; most starters were late into training camp. They did a decent job of protecting Cassel, but he was still sacked too many times for my liking, partly due to his lack of pocket presence early on and partly due to a rotating cast of characters on OL. The 300 pounders get chewed up in the pig pile and we need some elite young guys to get experience for a year before we run into contract issues next year.

Hate it

I hate to see my beloved Cal players end up with them. With this pick, Mack is dead to me! Thank goodness it’s only a mock. For now.

That's a bit harsh

I rooted for Tim Dwight while he was on the Pats (though he was special since he wasn’t just an Iowa alum, he was from my town and the best athlete in the history of my high school).

Perhaps harsh

But I can’t help the way I feel. I resent a team that has been handsomely rewarded for systematically breaking rules, and I hate to see players I like and respect getting sucked into that team. Someone had posted a question earlier whether we would prefer 1 ring the “right” way or 3 with controversy. No doubt, I prefer 1. (Though I’m certainly ready for the next one!)
