Dominic Rhodes to Buffalo

Via NFL.com:

Free-agent RB Dominic Rhodes agreed to a two-year, incentive-laden contract with the Buffalo Bills on Friday, NFL.com’s Steve Wyche reports.

The addition comes in the wake of Bills starting RB Marshawn Lynch being suspended for the first three games of the 2009 regular season for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. With Fred Jackson, who’s skipping voluntary workouts because he’s unhappy with his contract situation, and Xavier Omon among the other running backs on Buffalo’s roster, Rhodes will provide insurance.

Saw no one else posted it, so thought I thought I would go ahead.

anyway, I liked Rhodes and I think we definetly need a new RB, but I like the idea of getting fresh legs. I hope Mike Hart can become that guy, still, I expect the colts to get a new RB (not necessarily a starter or near starter, just a reliable spell back)

Disappointing

I thought Dom learned his lesson after his stint in Oakland. Hes gonna be the #3 back once Marshawn Lynch comes back from suspension. Oh well, money talks.

Is it April 25th yet?

by Playoff Pride on Apr 18, 2009 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

What was he supposed to do? Stay a free agent forever? The Colts weren’t going to pay him as much as Buffalo, and he certainly wasn’t going to get as much playing time as he would want. Besides, we all know he is at the end of his career so I don’t blame him.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Well

he’ll get playing time for the first few games, but as soon as Marshawn gets back he’ll be riding the bench. It was my understanding the Colts were going to bring him back when the market died down.

I’ll always have fond memories of Dom, especially from the 2006 season. I just wanted to see him retire as a Colt. But in today’s business that rarely happens.

Is it April 25th yet?

I disagree. I don’t think they had any intentions of re-signing him. He’s past his prime, even for a perennial backup.

You may be right

Can’t remember the article, but I remember Polian hinted that they would of liked to bring him back. He also did the same with Kelvin Hayden, and he got a nice contract.

Not a total suprise though. They can easily find someone to replace his role through the draft, unless they’re sold on Lance Ball.

I think so too

If they wanted to bring him back (like Hagler) they would have brought him back by now.

by LovinBlue on Apr 18, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Hart is a young, er, stud still.

I think that we will find him to be the great RB to team with Addai that we are all wanting, unless someone slips unbelievably in the draft. Like a projected third rounder Mike Hart did last year to us in the sixth.

by coltsfanawalt on Apr 18, 2009 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope Hart regains his form

I think he can be a great player if he comes back physically.

by AceOfSpades on Apr 19, 2009 3:59 AM EDT up reply actions

No doubt.

I believe he had some injury issues his senior year at Michigan. It’s kinda like Roy Hall. We’re left to hope that the injuries are freak things rather than personal health trends. Both guys have great upside. Health will be the key. I am more convinced about Mike Hart and his potential of the two, though.

Time to draft a RB

I always liked Rhodes, but his leaving was not unexpected.
This should open the door for the Colts to draft a RB in the early rounds.
I would much rather see them draft a RB than a WR in the first few rounds.

by centauri on Apr 18, 2009 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

No doubt. If I were to guess, I think they’d snag Moreno in a heartbeat if he fell to them. Donald Brown is also looking like a good possibility. There’s so many running backs they could go for man, I don’t even know where to begin.

I'm partial to Jennings

I think we share the view that RB is a vital need for this team, but I know there are fans that don’t feel the same way.
I’m not at all prepared to assume Hart will fill that void, at least not this soon after surgery.
I’d be fairly happy with Brown, as long as his repeated injuries aren’t a problem in the future.
If they can snag a quality back that can run with some power up the middle, catch a few passes and block for Manning, I think they should address this need somewhere in the first 4 rounds.

by centauri on Apr 18, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

So you think RB at 27 now?

I don’t think they will replace Dom with a first round pick. I am thinking 3rd or 4th round if Addai is their guy.

by AceOfSpades on Apr 19, 2009 4:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Addai isn’t their guy, so yeah, I think they’ll find a running back in the first 2 rounds.

You're entitled to your own opinions

But not your own facts. I think you mean “I don’t think Addai is their guy.” Unless I’m missing some interview with Polian.

Sorry, I saw that quote somewhere earlier and really just wanted to use it, I’m actually not trying to be a dick, but it fit. Anyway, like I said when I was talking about Wells, I frankly can’t see how Moreno or Wells couldn’t be BPA at 27. I mean, I totally want a DT, and would love to take them in both round 1 and 2 if we managed Jerry and either Hood or Gilbert fell. I mean, both of them (Gilbert and Hood) zoomed up draft boards post college season. Normally, unless someone puts up a ridiculous number (Gilbert kind of did), it’s normally hype. The draft board will probably end up more like the mocks at the end of NFL season taking into account trades etc. I’d say look at alot of the big boards and they’d honestly be a better ranking of the players in the draft.

Anyway, I really don’t know why I almost went off on a tangent there (brings up something I might talk about later though), but I’m still not sold on Jennings in round 2. Although, I’ll tell you straight up that I’d rather have him than Derrick Williams. In round 3 definitely, but there’s still a ton of prospects in round 2 that aren’t as much of a risk as Jennings. Yes, Jennings definitely would be worth a second round pick if he could do what I think he potentially could. But I’m more sure about other players than a dude that went to a division II school and performed at the same degree than several division I RBs performed. I “think” he could be the 4th best back in the entire draft behind Moreno, Wells, and D. Brown. But is he clearly as much better than A. Brown, K. Sheets, C. Peerman, McCoy or Greene? I’m not sure. I mean, I’m more sure of Moala being “pretty good” consistently throughout his career as a Colt and would definitely help our run defense than I am about Jennings. But in round 3? Oh yeah, no doubt. Jennings might be much different when going from division II to NFL speed as a RB. That and WR are the two positions on offense that can go from super awesome to a bust just based off of speed.

I’d rather have a healthy Hart about as much as I’d like Jennings right now. But seeing how that’s problem too much to hope for, I like Jennings/A.Brown in the 3rd and Peerman/Greene/Sheets in the 4th. Will that happen? Dunno, and I have a feeling they won’t go RB early just looking at where they’ve been showing interest. Unless they already knew everything they needed to know about the players, you’d expect them to at least look at a RB higher than a round 6-UDFA projection. The Colts literally have not worked out or interviewed a higher ranked RB.

We definitely need a RB though, not going to argue with that. I think D. Brown in the second (I have a very hard time believing he’ll drop that far though) would be sick. And I’m not sure how I’d feel with not taking Wells in the first unless it was for Jerry or possibly Laurinaitis. And I’m not sure I’d mind that.

This is either going to be one draft where Polian might go how quite a few people think he is, or probably one of the craziest ones we’ve seen from him in awhile. Going to be a fun weekend. I think there’s value at all our picks, so I’m pretty sure we’re going to come out pretty well. Value’s spread much better this season, seriously alot of value falls around our picks in the first 4 rounds or so. Round 2’s probably our weakest round, and why Jennings might make sense to take, so I’ll agree with you there.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

by monstersbox on Apr 20, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

It's hard to say

I’m hoping they won’t have to use a 1st round pick to get a high quality RB.
I would rather see the DT position firmly addressed first.
I was reading the player comparision write-ups, and maybe it’s possible that the DT position could be filled in the later rounds such as 3rd and 4th.
If so, that could open up some interesting possibilities.
I think Addai is still very useful but I don’t think he can provide the aspect of the running game that the Colts lack at this time.
It’s a serious deficiency as I see it, but a tandem of Addai and (Jennings or Brown or someone else) could really round out the running game, which in turn should help the passing game.
I hope they don’t wait too long in the draft to address it.

Anybody want to share some Dom info?

Did he ever do anything on special teams? Is there any reason to believe he will be active for the games when Marshawn comes back?

The best way to describe Dom is "a hard worker."

Now for some bullets on Dom:

  • He only returns kickoffs on special teams. Since you guys are set in that department, he won’t be on ST.
  • His running style is a straight-ahead one. He’s not the kind of guy to make 3 cuts behind the line of scrimmage looking for a good hole. So, he’s less likely to break a big run, but he’s also less likely to be tackled for a loss. He also never falls backward.
  • He’s a good threat in the passing game. Great hands and deceptive speed.
  • There’s every reason to believe that he’ll be active when Marshall comes back. He has no problem anymore with sharing the workload, and he works best in tandem.

Hope that helps!

Good Luck

Reading the Indy Star message board about this story is funny. That message board is always funny. I know that’s a random intro, but people were there bashing him for taking money. Puh-leez!

I will miss Dom too. I think he is an outstanding backup running back. He knows the Colts offense and his ability to catch the ball really makes him great. I’ll never forget that play the Colts ran in Pittsburgh last year where he trotted into the end zone for an easy TD catch (even though that was mostly play design – it was a great play). Or, much more importantly, his MVP performance. For an undrafted guy, for any player actually, he has accomplished amazing things and he’s a great story. I have no problem with him taking the money in Buffalo, and people who do are assuming the Colts weren’t trying to wait things out to get as much leverage as possible.

This seems like a long term smart move. Rhodes is 30. Need to plan for the future. However, this draft will tell us what Polian thinks of Addai. Does Polian think Addai is injury prone? Soft? Indecisive? All of the above? Or does he think he had a bad year last year? One side of me says the Colts will take a late pick on a RB (<6) or just bring in undrafted FAs. Basically, this means we don’t really address RB through the draft, which is how the Colts have approached this problem in the past. That past handling led to the resigning of Rhodes by Polian after he had it with Kenton Keith after the SD game. If the Colts decide not to deal with this problem through the draft, that would be based on the premise that our running game sucked last year because of the o-line, which was young, which I won’t argue against, although it’s probably not the exclusive reason. Also, it would be based on the fact that Addai can in fact play when he’s health, which I believe. The other side of me says the Colts will take a RB in the first three rounds. Indy loves taking offensive skill positions early. I can’t really fault this strategy because it’s created tremendous success. Plus there is a real lack of depth at RB now. Rhodes was a great security blanket. Others may disagree, but I felt no difference in confidence last year if Rhodes or Addai were in the game. Rhodes had earned my confidence. Hart and Lance Ball have not.

Oh well, that’s sort of jibberish but it will be interesting to see what happens. Can’t wait for the draft.
