PTI says
Orton and 2 1st round picks.
If that is the case, the Broncos won in my opinion. Those picks are HUGE and Orton’s above average.

Wow. That was fast.
If they did get Orton and 2 first rounders, like MrNFL reports, that’s HUGE for Denver.

quick non-self-promotion
One of my better college friends has a somewhat popular sports blog (rumorsandrants.com) and he predicted this nearly 3 weeks ago.
Okay maybe he didn’t predict it as much as he just hoped for it as a Bears fan.

i think it works for both teams
the bears finally have a viable quarterback, and denver now has pick 12 pick 18 and an extra 2010 first rounder.

It's more boom/bust for the Bears
If Cutler develops into a stud QB and plays with them for years, it’s justified.
HOWEVAH (Stephen A. voice), that’s a HEFTY price. RIGHT NOW, Cutler’s only a bit of an upgrade from Orton. And you can build a team with those picks. The question is potential, Orton doesn’t strike me as someone who’s going much higher. Cutler could

Plus
Who do the Bears have on offense other than Forte? Not much at WR, and a mediocre at best offensive line. I’d be surprised if Cutler in year 1 does much more than Orton did this past year. (And it’s much harder to fix the holes without those picks)

I was just thinking that...
I can’t name one of their WR either….hmmm
But their Defense is better than Denver’s.

Eh..
Cutler is a bit more of a slight upgrade over Orton. Not dogging Orton, I dig him, but he doesn’t have the arm Cutler does to show the full potential of Hester on a deep route. Just go watch the New Orleans game. Orton underthrew a wide open Hester about 3-4 times. Luckily Hester recovered fast enough to get a couple of huge pass interferences.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

But remember, Cutler will have less around him with the Bears than he did with the Broncos
Big difference between Brandon Marshall and a great O-line to….well…the Bears.

He's a stud, true
But you could’ve used those picks to get some receivers and linemen, which they desperately lack.
AND, it seems like more often than not, 2nd year backs get hurt after having such a heavy load the rookie year. Not that Forte is guaranteed this, but it’s a thought. Without him, they are screwed.

You mean
The Marshall that just had hip surgery, another infraction that he’ll probably get suspended again for, and the nerve damage he had from punching through a T.V.?
And their O-line isn’t that bad. This also forces the defenses to back out of the box. And yes, I think Hester could be a phenomenal receiver with Cutler. And Greg Olsen is a VERY good TE who could turn into a pro bowler. He’s only going into his 3rd year.

Hester is one of the most over-rated guys in the league
Although I agree on Greg Olsen. The O-Line is pretty brutal though. They did sign Kevin Shaffer from the Browns, but it’s still a massive downgrade from a very good Denver O-line.
We’ll see how Cutler adjusts to it. For this to be a good trade, Cutler has to become a stud.

Pace isn’t near the force he once was, and he’s lucky these days to play half a season.
If he can stay healthy (BIG IF) he’s a solid starter. But they probably signed him to a huge deal expecting him to be the HOF player he used to be.

Marvin?
Now that they have a HOF LT, pro bowl QB, they need a HOF WR to complete the set.
NO idea of their cap space and not that I want it, but you hardly get a top-10 QB and deprive him of tools, right?

interesting and a good point. Denver is looking for a different basket of players—though probably D-intensive.
Hey, with a limited number of T-2 teams and matching 1st round talent, that could have been a HUGE deal knocking one of those teams out of the picture.

Wow, what a dumb move on the Bears’ part. Who the hell is Cutler going to throw to? They should have kept those draft picks and just drafted some receivers for Orton instead. The Broncos totally came out on top in this move, the Bears are complete morons.

I paid attention to Hester
because I had him on a fantasy team. I’m far too lazy to look for links, but the consensus I got during last season was that he started the year pretty raw as you say, but made big strides in route running and defense recognition as the year progressed. If he continues, he could be a breakout candidate this year. Worst case scenario is that he can at least run a fly pattern and expect the ball to be within 10 yds of him.

Yeah he is. Trust me, I watched quite a few Bears games. As ctnyc said, he started off shaky but had obvious progress towards the end of the season.

The Bears
Ok, the Bears just got what they feel is their FRANCHISE QB that they haven’t had. Now maybe he goes there and flops, but if I were a Bears fans I’d be completely stoked. You didn’t lose anything aside from a pick, which is never a guarantee to begin with, and Orton. I don’t think Denver got enough either. They could’ve gotten more from several teams. I wonder if they even tried talking to Carolina for Peppers and a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

Marvin?
If they had cap space, is there a chance they go after Marv?
After all of the debates on this site about when to draft WRs, I think they can find some decent talent in the 2nd round if they go that route.

rat fink
beat me to the Marvin suggestion. Assuming they have the room, he’d be a great security blankie for Cutler, though IIRC, not much of a mentor for Hester. Potential drawback: they play on grass, not turf, right? IF he has lost a step, that won’t help. I said IF.

They both got what they wanted
The Bears have a good defense, along with Olsen, Forte, Hester, and now Cutler on offense. If they pick up someone like Robiske in the 2nd they could now have a very solid offense as well. They gave up too much, but QBs like Cutler are hard to come by.

Cutler
I REALLY think that the proven bird in the hand is probably well worth the unproven two in the bush. Sorry to mangle cliches there, but Cutler is a proven top-10 QB and any rookie is not. I agree that is hard to come by.
They both got what they wanted and both fan bases should be pretty optimistic. Shake is right that right now, their grades rely on what we know today, but history is never that static and this will be judged down the road. How many times did we hear that SD fleeced the NYG in the Manning/Rivers trade because they also got Merriman and Kaeding with the extra picks? Many, many times. Then the NYG won the SB and SD did not and suddenly you don’t hear much of that anymore. History won’t be so kind as to limit its judgement to what we know today. And even a year or two after the draft, the final decision won’t be set in stone.
And if Hester has a breakout year, I won’t be so sure it’s just his logical progression from last year and not attributable to a superior QB. (was that even a sentence? I don’t know how to fix it.) Remember, last season everyone was surprised that Orton proved to be pretty good, but the main benefit he gave the Bears was that he didn’t make as many mistakes as Grossman. Behold, the mighty Game Manager! Let’s not forget that. When a guy is celebrated for not screwing up, that’s not exactly praise so much as relief. How can you succeed as a game manager QB when your D sucks?
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

after further review I think the broncos got the better end of this deal.
yes they now have no qb but….and this is a big but
they are going to get some solid picks and this team will be loaded in the next two years.
I think the bears gave up WAY TOO MUCH. congrats jay. you now have NO line to protect you (the broncos line is developing into a very solid group and are young), absoulutely no recievers, oh the broncos just have the best up and coming group in football, and you went to a run first team. have fun throwing the ball in the windy city come nov and dec. reminds me of TO catching the ball in nov and dec in the other windy city. they now have a cry baby star with an old d and no weapons or protection
who came out on top on this deal? I think josh daniels will eventually find his qb. yes they will miss cutler. but not his antics or his interceptions. yes I also know john elway threw alot of interceptions but cutler was second to only the interception king, brett favre last year. and he had a line and weapons to protect him.
so the bears fans are happy!
I love this quote….You have to give Angelo credit for taking the plunge with Cutler. It was more than bold move; it was a move that will end up in the first or second paragraph of his obituary.
when is the last time a star player in a trade for the future of their team won???
by kinnickcolt on Apr 3, 2009 5:48 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Eh..
I think they both improved their chances. Even with Cutler, their defense will benefit from the extra picks. Orton’s not a terrible QB and probably fits McDaniels style better anyway. The Bears get a QB to build around and possibly open the window for Hester’s breakout season. Not to mention Olsen and Forte are great receiving weapons, so I really don’t think they’re that far behind in terms of weapons. Forte is better than any back on Denver, and one of the better receiving backs in the league. Olsen is probably at least as good, if not better than Scheffler (who’s on the trading block anyway). And Hester definitely made obvious improvements as a receiver by the end of the season. Not to mention that Forte might just be able to increase his ypc just a tiny bit with defenses being forced to respect Cutler’s arm and not being able to stack 9 in the box.
And looking at Brandon Marshall’s off field shannanigans, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being the next Pacman. Seriously, he can’t control himself. Not to mention his injury history :
2006 – Slight PCL tear in preseason
2007 – Groin strain, pulled quad prior to the season
2008 – “slipped” on a McDonals wrapper while wrestling with family members and put his arm through a T.V. that required surgery and caused nerve damage to his hand.
2009 – Hip surgery; out until around late July
His legal history :
2004 – Arrested for assault of an officer, refusal to obey, disorderly conduct, resisting an oficer
2007 – January 1st : Was one of the two players who was with Darrent Williams when he was killed. The motive is assumed to be retaliation from an altercation with Marshall’s cousin
2007 – March 26th : Arrested for domestic violence against his girlfriend. Chargers were dropped and he was placed in anger management.
2007 – October 22nd : Arrested for driving under the influence. Plead it down to 1 year probation and 24 hours of community service.
2008 – June : Pulled over for illegal lane change; had no license or proof of insurance; was part of the October plea deal.
2008 – Arrested for misdemeanor battery from an incident in Atlanta. No court date as of yet.
2009 – March : Arrested for disorderly conduct for fighting with his fiancee. Charges were dropped.
I don’t expect Marshall to last more than 2 or 3 seasons if he continues down this path.
And the Bears have handled their line issues. At least in the short term. And saying he’s going to have trouble throwing in December in Chicago is silly. Denver might not be the windy city, but it’s definitely not LOS.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

Who was the last team to win a Superbowl with an average QB?
Bears won this deal in a landslide. Only way Broncos even get close is if they manage to get a good QB in the draft and he turns into what Jay Cutler is now. In three years. After they suck in the intervening period.
Let’s see how good Kyle Orton is when he has to throw 40-50 times a game because he’s got no defense and no running game.
Cutler needs someone to throw to before you’d consider the Bears anything more than an above average team, but this is a HUGE upgrade for them.
