Yes, a team in rebuilding

Should focus on losing first, and then be forced to give an even bigger contract to yet another rookie next year.

In short, shut up.

by Marik on Apr 24, 2009 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow easy there big guy

I never said they should “focus on losing” I think it’s pretty clear that the lions won’t be a very good team next year even with the draft. by taking smith or curry they’d pay less this year than stafford and have an opportunity to draft a QB for the future in a much deeper QB class.

by torontocoltsfan on Apr 25, 2009 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But why draft a QB that high, if you can't protect him?

He’ll constantly be on his back like a $2 whore if the Lions don’t build that line. Plus, the qb class of this draft is pretty weak. Like Torontocoltsfan said the Lions should’ve picked curry and the wait for bradford or mccoy next year.

I think Stafford is the right pick, but that contract is outrageous. Something needs to be done about this.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Curry was willing to take less than last years top picks

that should have pushed him over the top. He’s the top player in the draft, as close to a sure thing as you get in the draft, and he’ll take significantly less money than the others want.

I got Summer hatin' on me cuz I'm hotter than the sun. Spring hatin' on me cuz I ain't never sprung
Winter hatin' on me cuz I'm colder than Y'all. And I will never, I will never, I will never Fall.

That’s nice and all, but you don’t rebuild a franchise around a LB.

You don't rebuild a franchise with one pick

they should try to avoid crippling their franchise for a half decade or more.

I got Summer hatin' on me cuz I'm hotter than the sun. Spring hatin' on me cuz I ain't never sprung
Winter hatin' on me cuz I'm colder than Y'all. And I will never, I will never, I will never Fall.

Of course you don’t, you build AROUND THAT PICK. Besides, how the hell do you know Curry is guarunteed to be a great player any more than Stafford in the NFL?

Junior QBs have an awful track record in the NFL

even worse than QBs in general. Linebackers are much less likely to bust. I don’t know Curry is safer, but the history builds a pretty strong case.

If they could have gotten Jason Smith for close to or a bit over what Long got last year they should have done that.

The rookie salaries are insane. A smart team would take below “draft chart” value to move down if their isn’t a super-prospect like a Peyton there, but barring that they should do all they can to avoid handing nearly a tenth of their cap and 40 million dollars guaranteed for the next 6 years to a player who doesn’t work out.

Track records shouldn’t sway you one way or another when it comes to drafting someone. If you (by you I mean a team) think soandso is the guy, then you draft him, period. The Lions think Stafford is the guy, and I agree with them. In 3 or 4 years, I think he could be pretty good.

If I was a Lions fan I wouldn’t even be worried about the defense. Schwartz is a smart guy, he knows what he is doing. By the time Stafford matures and has a couple years under his belt, Schwartz will have that defense totally revamped and up to snuff.

If they could have gotten Jason Smith for close to or a bit over what Long got last year they should have done that.

Why?

Because they could have had a similar quality player, who was less risky for cheaper

I got Summer hatin' on me cuz I'm hotter than the sun. Spring hatin' on me cuz I ain't never sprung
Winter hatin' on me cuz I'm colder than Y'all. And I will never, I will never, I will never Fall.

get a QB from the better 2010 class

and they’ll have a real OL and a D that isn’t historically bad to support him then.

You can't build a franchise without a good offensive line

That QB is really nice when he’s laying on the ground.

What the hell is this? Do you guys think you can solve all of your problems with one draft pick or something? Stop arguing with me just to argue.

Most guaranteed money for any NFL player ever… and he’s not even an actual NFL player yet!

Yeah, I have a problem with that.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

It's a free market

Nobody’s forcing the Lions to throw that much money at him. They could draft him and tell him to sit on his ass if he wouldn’t agree to a more realistic deal.

If they want to pay him that much, good for him.

f matt stafford

go jason smith! sic em bears!

yah ive been drinking… go mavs on saturday

"Daryl (Morey, the Rockets general manager) and I were talking this morning. We both discussed how great Tracy is in the playoffs. There's very few people who have the ability to step up their games in the playoffs and he does. So we're not looking to run away from Tracy." - Houston Rockets Owner, Leslie Alexander

big mistake

They should have taken Jason smith….or Andre Smith, or Eugene Monroe. Their line is so bad, they could have Peyton back there and they still wouldn’t be a good team. I see another David Carr. Stafford is going get hit so many times, he’ll be gun shy and carreer over! Go Colts!!!!

They do have two first round picks mind you. Though could easily land Britton or Oher at the 20th spot. Or they could draft their defensive leader in Laurinaitis like I suggested.

I don’t think so. If Laurinaitis falls to the late 1st, I hope the Colts would take him.

Too much money

We need a rookie wage scale now.

"I saw a commercial on late night TV, it said,'Forget everything you know about slipcovers.' So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were."

That's one of the things being talked about

when negotiating the new CBA.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Every time the Colts have played the KC Chiefs in the playoffs, they have gone on to at least the AFC Championship game.

what a shocker, holdovers from the matt millen era make a terrible draft decision…
