Colts select Donald Brown, RB, UConn

Donaldbrown_medium

Another great pick by Bill Polian in a long series of fantastic first rounders. The Colts have clearly made themselves better with their first round pick.

UPDATE: My thoughts. Brown wasn't my favorite guy on the board, but he's a Colts type player, of late 1st round value, at a position where he can contribute. I have no doubts Polain made the right pick yet again. Brown will make a great tandem with Joseph Addai.

An illistration of how unpredictable the Colts picks are: Before the pick was made Donald Brown's name had appeared on the site in just 41 comments. Over months of the draft process, and countless in-depth talks about the pick, he was hardly discussed

Hmm..

Had my hopes up for Hood..

by jocre on Apr 25, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

huh...

okay. I guess. My opinion is that the running problems were from the O-Line, not from the RBs. Even losing Rhodes, … I don’t know. I really think I would have rather seen a DT or WR. Bush as I answered the poll.. In Polian I Trust… I Guess

Would rather have traded down or taken Hood

but the best thing about this pick is that I don’t like Addai all that much so Brown can take over hopefully

We still need DT, BADLY

I agree with monstersbox from other thread

There is plenty of defense that will be left in round 2. I’m liking the pick

I could probably see Polian trading up in the 2nd to grab Hood. At the same time, I’m pretty comfortable with this pick. The thing you keep hearing about Brown is that he’s durable and versatile, which is what the Colts look for in a running back. You have to keep the stable around Peyton stocked, and I think that when Brown fell into their laps at 27, you have to take him.

yep

I like him as a RB, obviously wanted defense first, but I like this guy if they were going to take a RB and I think he fits the scheme better than Wells would have

We will be able to run the ball next year

Brown is a great running back. He will be good and the Hart-Addai-Brown combo will be fine.

It's not WR

That’s a good thing

They're aiming for Brace NOT Hood

If he lasts that long, that will be the pick.

Nicks

where I thought he might go

Mixed feelings--

I really wanted DT most of all, but I wanted RB over WR.

Honestly, I’m just glad our 1RP wasn’t a WR. :P

On the other hand, I kind of fell in love with Donald Brown when I actually watched some game footage of him. I really do like the pick.

by hahasound on Apr 25, 2009 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

same as me

wanted D first, but rather address RB than WR like many thought they had to go.

by AceOfSpades on Apr 25, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Love it!

Great pick. With Rhodes gone we need depth at RB. We spent all last draft grabbing guys for the O-line, so we have to give them a chance to improve. Addai is talented, but he’s always been in a two-back system – he needs a complement. Brown is a solid runner, but just as importantly brings great hands to the RB position. With Peyton Manning on the team, any RB on the roster needs to be able to catch the ball, and Brown will be a reliable target.

Oh yeah, and in Polian I trust, too. ;)

As I think about the selection,

it’s great for Peyton. Polian has to give Peyton more weapons and we all know about the running game. Plus the Colts will most likely trade up in the 2nd rd and get a Defensive guy. I’m really loving the pick now.

by KMR24 on Apr 25, 2009 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

Trading up....

I don’t like trading up. If the Colts had someone in mind that they would take on D, they should have taken him already. They still have a bunch of picks left and obviously need to address DT and LB (depth) and they will be able to do that without trading future picks or giving up picks this year.

Kenny Britt

glad he went to the Titans because I don’t like him. I think he will eventually be a cancer to the team as his head will get the best of him

Kenny Britt

If I’m to believe what I’m hearing – that Britt is the best route runner on the board – it would have been nice to have seen the Cotls grab him. That’s exactly the strength Marv brought to the field when he was at his peak.

From what I have heard, he isn’t a great character guy

I LOVE IT!

I said right before the pick polian is going to pick a rb…..and that is not the pick I expected but I LOVE IT…he can block, he has good hands and HE CAN RUN BABY……for all the times I saw…addai for one….this is a great addition!!!! they will make a great tandemn.

polian goes for the best available player and I think he was the best fit for the colts

and this is a colts kind of guy, his attitude and athleticism, his character…. he is going to be better than a crabtree pick

by kinnickcolt on Apr 25, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

I was very surprised

But when are we not? BP is the top personnel man in the league, he likes what he sees in Brown and I can’t pretend that RB is not a need, 2 viable backs are a MUST in today’s NFL.

Fingers crossed for Brace or Robiskie in round 2 though.

It's not so much that I dislike the pick

Or Brown as a player.

I just can’t see two first rounders playing one position as value. To me, that says we screwed up one of them.

I wonder...

how much people’s perceptions of this pick have changed since we’ve drafted Moala?

by hahasound on Apr 25, 2009 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Moala

Moala in the 2nd turned this pick into an awesome pick. Polian knew which DT he wanted and would fit. Hood’s forte is in the pass rush, Moala’s is in getting double teams, bullrushing and the run. Moala honestly makes a better NT than Hood would have. Combine Moala with a Gilbert or a King and that’s a HUGE upgrade at DT and also gives Peyton THE LEADING RUSHER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL last season everyone. Who had more TDs and ypc than Moreno without having Stafford and that passing game to help him.

D. Brown/Moala is a seriously awesome two round combo. Moala was rated as the second or third best DT for quite awhile after the season. I think Polian might have honestly had him ranked above Hood. Obviously he felt strong enough about him to move up.

We just addressed the two biggest weaknesses of the team. Running the ball and defending the run. What more could we ask for? I know it might not be Hood/Jennings or Jerry/Robiskie, but I’m totally stoked that the day ended up like this.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.

Now get rid of Addai

Don’t be saying J Addai is hurt.. He is hurt all the time. Got a big contract and is a pantywaist. If J Addai had stretched for a yard against SD, We would have gone on to win another SB. He is a puss and we need someone we can count on..

anyone that calls a NFL player a pantywaist is all talk and would cry like a baby the first time they got hit by a NFL defender

a lot of different things would have led to another SB

like the right side of the line blocking at all on that same play.
