Colts 2nd round pick: Fili Moala DT, USC
The Colts traded up 5 spots to take USC DT FIli Moala 56th overall.
Update: Like the vast majority, I like the pick a lot. If Polian was willing to give up a 5th rounder to make sure they get him then I'm sold. Moala will be an athletic NT to play along side the undersized Foster/Dawson combo.

Everyone loves this pick!
I am so excited. I never thought I could be so excited about a SUC player but I am. I think he could be a starter from day 1 across from Foster.

If anyone hates this pick they hate Polian
And I will be damned if I can stand by and let someone hate Moala.

I hope it's King
King at UT and Moala at NT would be awesome.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
That's it
I was just wondering who was that player that I wanted badly. I remember I wanted Marcus Howard last year and we got him. I want King this year.

We got Antoine Bethea and plenty of other good picks after the 4th round … i don’t think we dismiss need, Polian is great at finding those late round steals

What’s to complain about? He started the offseason as a first round projection. Him AND Brown? We made out. B.P. does it again.

My only concern
Is that I’ve read alot about inconsistency and stamina. I want to see a guy like this give 100%, put him in a good rotation. He’s got some great talent if he does.

Sometimes poor technique, doesn’t rush the passer.
But you’re never going to get a perfect guy in the middle of the second round. He’s as good as we could ask for.

I think Moala will be that Sapp type player the Colts have been lacking at the NT position. He’ll be a great compliment to Eric Foster. The other guys like Peria Jerry and Ziggy Hood were more UTs than NTs.

True
I think people have been forgetting than Addai has taken too much of a beating and drafting Brown will make him a more durable back and a better back. Saying that this means that Addai isn’t good is like saying that when the Vikings drafted Peterson they were saying Chester Taylor wasn’t good. Teams who use two backs win Super Bowls now. Pittsburgh had Mewelde Moore and Willie Parker for the playoffs. The Giants had Ward and Jacobs. We had Rhodes and Addai. Two back systems are necessary to win.
"I saw a commercial on late night TV, it said,'Forget everything you know about slipcovers.' So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were."
-Mitch Hedberg
Chester Taylor
Was a 6th round pick. Drafting someone in the first round to replace him means nothing. Willie Parker was undrafted; Mewelde Moore was a fourth round pick, as was Brandon Jacobs; Derrick Ward was a seventh rounder.
Joe Addai was a first round pick. You don’t draft two first round running backs to run a RBC. It’s a dramatic waste of a first round pick.

there’s plenty of time for both guys to be on the field. how much did dominic rhodes play last year? don’t mean to knock on rhodes, but you don’t think it would have been nice to have another first round talent get the number of carries that rhodes did? you’d rather we have reached at DT and then gotten a 2nd round talent? so that instead of one first and one second round pick, we might as well have had two 2nd rounders? what polian doesn’t seem to you like a better way to play the situation?

I'm not a member of the cult of Polian
He’s a great GM, but he’s not infallible.
I don’t have a problem with Brown, as I’ve said elsewhere. I have a problem that we need a guy like Brown. We blew our pick on Addai, it’s that simple. We drafted him in the first round; he hasn’t proven to be a first round RB. That’s no knock on him, he can only be the guy he is, but we whiffed the pick.
We’ll be the only team in the NFL running two first round picks at 10-15 touches per game. That’s not good value, and it’s not how you get the best out of low first round picks.

Pretty well
Which kinda makes the Panthers blowing the 13th pick on a guy they already had a good starter at a bit of a waste, doesn’t it?
Which is the point. They’ve drafted two starters for a one starter position. They could have got a guy good enough to back up Williams in the 4th or 5th round, and drafted for need instead of wasting a pick on Stewart.
Bad value.

What's accidental about it?
The Stewart pick’s a waste because they didn’t know what they had. They drafted a guy they ended up not needing. That’s the very definition of wasteful drafting; the very definition of a draft pick bust. They’ve got a 13th pick in the NFL draft earning $10m to sit on the sidelines twiddling his thumbs and waiting for Williams to get injured.

it's completely worth the pick
if you can keep two first round running backs getting 10-15 touches a game for 7 or 8 years rather than 2 or 3.
I don’t disagree that addai was a disappointment last year, and it’s true that Polian’s not divine (though really damn good at his job) but unless you can get out of that first round pick, you need to get a first round talent, and donald brown, because of his intelligence and athleticism, fits the mold. so you adjust and play two first round backs. also, addai’s up for a new contract in the near future. you can another running back, leverage that on the contract with addai, and have a backup plan if he leaves, or you can overpay for addai next year and end up with the same mediocre (according to you) RB for the foreseeable future.
by CooperManningsNotTrying on Apr 25, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions
You're not even reading what I'm saying
I have never said Brown is mediocre. I’m simply saying we have got bad value from two first round draft picks. If we give them both 12-15 snaps a game, we’re wasting two first round picks. If we give one 18-20 snaps and the other 8-10 snaps, we’re wasting one pick. If we let Addai hit free agency, he’s a bust. If Addai comes back and puts up 1400 yards, 15 TDs and has a Pro Bowl season, we wasted the pick on Brown.
We’re in a lose lose situation – there’s no way we can get value from both first rounders. About the best we can do is hope one of them goes crazy next season and we can trade him for decent value.
by eltharion_doa on Apr 25, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I just don't agree
that 12 – 15 snaps is a waste of a first round RB. I think you maximize the value of both picks by allowing them to split carries. and there’s actual FO stats on how a RB declines from down to down, so it’s not as if you gain anything by supposedly letting one get into a “rhythm.”
by CooperManningsNotTrying on Apr 25, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions
and I know you didn't say Brown is mediocre
but it seems you’re implying that Addai is
by CooperManningsNotTrying on Apr 25, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
He wasn't even mediocre last season
He was genuinely bad.
It’s not a question of getting the most out of the two players – Addai’s the kind of guy who seems to need a light workload to be effective. And that’s fine. We don’t know what kind of guy Brown will be yet, of course.
The point is that we’re not getting the most out of two first round draft picks. First rounds picks are like gold. If you need to spend two first round picks on players to play one position, you’ve failed.
by eltharion_doa on Apr 25, 2009 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions
No, no, and no.
The league is changing, and I think we’ve made it pretty obvious that the days of the workhorse back are over. Look what happened to Larry Johnson, LT, Shaun Alexander, Rudi Johnson, et al. If we can have three 1st round talents in the passing game, then why not 2 in the running game if that makes that aspect of our offense significantly better?
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation
Again, you're not reading what I'm saying
You don’t need a workhorse. That doesn’t mean you have to blow two first round picks on an RBBC.
You can have three first round talents in the passing game because you can get them all on the field at the same time. No matter how you spin the Colts running game, you’re going to have a first round pick watching at least half the snaps.
That is not value. That is not maximising the utility of your first round picks.
by eltharion_doa on Apr 25, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I can concede that Addai wasn't a slam dunk
If you need to spend two first round picks on players to play one position, you’ve failed.
at any other position that may be true, but I think RB is a different case. but like I said above, if you think you’ve made a mistake with Addai, you can’t let yourself get into a situation in which you’re desperate for a guy at a position that affects so much the ability of your hall of fame QB.
if you’re just put off by all the respect Polian gets, fine, be a hater. But no one’s ever said he succeeds by hitting a home run every year,. In fact, it’s his very will to play it safe and be disciplined that’s so remarkable.
Drafting Addai late in the first round is a far cry from Steve Emtman, in any case, which is especially revealing as we all clamor for a DT year in and year out.

by CooperManningsNotTrying on Apr 25, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you’d be hard pressed to find any other team in the league that has as many of it’s own first round draft picks still on their roster as the Colts do.
Polian has always placed a premium on surrounding Peyton with the best talent available. I’d rather he picked the Best Player Available at 27 than reach down for a guy. In this case, I think that’s exactly what happened. The Colts probably didn’t have Hood as high as the fans did, and said “Hey, we’ll grab Moala in the 2nd, and take the 2nd/3rd best running back in the draft in the 1st”.
Choosing Brown isn’t an indictment of Addai’s skills. They’re completely different runners. Addai is a shifty back that can make guys miss, but because he’s smaller has a tendency to wear down faster. Brown is your more stereotypical, north/south, one-cut kind of guy. Some teams will have problems defending one or the other or both. Moreover, moreso than any other position, rookie running backs contribute immediately to the teams that draft them.
If you can find a glaring area of need on the Colts, and a pick at 27 that wouldn’t have been a reach for that position, AND that that pick would be better than Brown, I’ll concede that it’s a waste.
Simply put, low first round draft picks != high first round draft picks.

Again, missing the point
This isn’t about Addai. This isn’t about Brown. This isn’t about whether or not you can have them both in the same side. This has almost nothing to do with the players.
This is about using first round draft picks to maximise the value that you get from them. We are in a situation where no matter what we do – short of putting Addai or Brown in at split end – we’re going to have first round draft picks watching at least half the game from the sideline.
RBBCs work pretty well – but they almost always have at least one guy who was a lower round draft pick. It doesn’t matter so much if you’re second guy in an RBBC is a 4th or 5th round pick – you’re pretty lucky to get a contributer there anyway. But having a first round pick spend half the game on the bench is a waste – how well they complement each other is irrelevant.
To make it absolutely, perfectly clear – I have no problem with drafting Brown as a player. The problem is that we have got to a situation where we need to draft a first round RB because our current first round RB can’t perform like a first round RB.
And that is wasting draft picks.

We drafted Addai
and won a Super Bowl with his help. If I’m going to have a 1st round bust, I don’t mind it being someone that gets Indy a ring in the process. No matter how long he stays in Indy, I’ll never consider picking him a bust. Best choice in the world? Maybe not. But it’s hard to hate on him.

But I’m still a little upset that we traded away our 5 to move up just a few picks. Marks was still there had Moala had been taken. You know Polian could have grabbed a sleeper down in the 5th, just seems like a bit of a waste.
The Colts won’t draft another DT people. Moala is going to play UT, listen to what Polian said in his statement about why they drafted Moala.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.
Oh and I write words and stuff for Stampede Blue.
what point did he make...i do not have audio or is there link of a transript?

He said something to the effect of how Moala can be utilized in both run and passing situations. His length and speed is what they were looking for. They look at him as a bigger Raheem Brock.

I still won’t be suprised if they draft a bigger more run stuffer type player in the 3rd or with one of their 4th picks just in case. If Moala gets hurt, the Colts are back where they were before.

I just took from what he said yesterday that they could add another DT possibly
The perceived need for defensive tackles in the draft. The Colts released defensive tackle Ed Johnson early last season and Quinn Pitcock retired unexpectedly early in training camp. "We lost Pitcock and Big Ed, who we felt had essentially answered the questions for us," Polian said. "It’s probably an area we could use a guy or two."
“use a guy or two” stood out to me

I listened to the presser
it sounds like he’s at least playing some UT
When asked about Fili being the big guy in the middle, he said the FIli wasn’t necessarily THE big guy in the middle.
Then on another question he talked about having a undertackle that’s bigger than 275lbs would help some situations.
suggests to me he’ll play both if the Colts don’t add any more DTs.

who would've thought
that with al davis reaching all over the place, michael jonson and jarron gilbert would still be available on the second day?

I want Derrick Williams to fall
That would be a nice third round pick. Slot receiver and returner.

That would satisfy just about everyone.
RB, WR/KR, and DT. It’s an odd draft day when Colts fans feel satisfied after a draft. I keep waiting for Polian to draft 4 more centers.

If Duke fell to us...
That would be epic. I’ve read reports now that he could play both G positions and RT. That would be huge for us.
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation
can someone fill me on what happened to the Bears' second rounder?

Yep. Beat me to it.
That now means that they did not have a selection today.
Cutler better be really good next year, or the Bears have absolutely no chance.

Traded to the Seahawks
Chicago traded its second-round selection (49th overall) to Seattle for their third- and fourth-round selections (68th and 105th overall, respectively)
Im amazed to see DJ Moore still on the bored
He was once projected late first early second. The man is a freakin player I can say that for sure because I played on the same football field as him when he was a senior at Broome High school in South Carolina when they beat us 79-0 he killed us all game long. He would fill 2 needs for us he is a definite upgrade at the nickle corner and he is a great kick returner and I think one day he could be a starter. I’m gonna start a call to Bill myself and tell him to draft DJ MOORE anyone else with me???
oh yea and also
jarrett dillard he has had an amazing carrier at Rice and he could play in the slot for us and play soon if we get him and Moore that will make me so happy
Little surprised we traded up to save just five picks...
But I don’t hate it. At least it wasn’t Evander Hood in the first.
I’d like to see:
3rd-Duke Robinson OG/RT, Oklahoma
4th-Ramses Barden WR, Cal Poly
4th-Coye Francies CB, San Jose St
6th-Antonio Appelby MLB, Virginia
7th-Whoever the best punter is
Here's a good one on Fili

And I really like the Brown pick. I think I’ve argued my opinion about him more than once.

Both of them are going to look great in Colts uniforms.
Be nice to see something along the lines of :
4. J. Brinkley
4. M. King
5. B. Fletcher
6. J. Dillard
7. A. Afalava
But I can’t complain, first two rounds are at the upper end of what I hoped to expect.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
no 5th rounder now

Moala and Gilbert back-to-back? Interesting.

Yes
And I think it’d not only be a steal, but it’d be the best 3rd round pick we could make. Period. Gilbert’s value in the 3rd is phenomenal and I still believe he’s the best T2 UT in the draft.
