Pick #201, Colts select Curtis Painter, QB, Purdue
via i.cdn.turner.com
Q: Could Curtis Painter be a starter for the Colts some day?
Football Outsiders' Aaron Schatz for ESPN: Yes, and that day will be called week 17
I'm not a fan of this pick. Mitch King as well as few good OTs and LBs were on the board. If Painter doesn't beat out Sorgi this will either be a wasted pick (if they cut him) or a wasted roster spot (if they carry him as the 3rd QB.)

Terrible pick
He was benched senior year, is coming from a spread offense and it’s not a position of need. I bet he ends up on practice squad. I hate this pick.

He was benched
because the players around him were awful

Psh
He couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat. I’ve never seen a college QB so inaccurate on deep balls.

Draft Countdown
Strengths:
Terrific height and bulk…Arm strength is more than adequate…Solid mechanics…Quick delivery…Good anticipation and timing…Has a lot of big-time experience…Very productive…Decent program pedigree.
Weaknesses:
Not a great athlete…Can be wildly inconsistent…Lacks great accuracy and touch…Makes too many bad decisions…Tends to stare down his targets…Isn’t very mobile…Footwork will have to be tweaked…Did not play in a pro style offense..Leadership ability has been questioned.

but seriously
orton and brees have had some success

True
But Painter is not the same QB as those two. Brees has some accuracy and same with Orton.

i know i cant argue with a Polian decision.........
how much better is this guy than the best UDFA available after the 7th?

maybe peyton can teach him the finer points of the game.
he seems to have all of the measurables (height, bulk, and arm). The rest (hopefully) can be taught. It sure seems like a low risk/high reward pick.

Meh...
I know it’s a low bar for him to top Sorgi, but we could’ve picked someone who can make a decent impact now, and probably gotten a more favorable QB to groom next year.

i'm not satisfied with the poll question
do we have to say goodbye to sorgi if we’ve spent a pick on sorgi?

the other option is to carry a 3rd QB on the roster
or put Painter on the PS, which is a wasted pick in my mind.

yeah...
I’m coming around to the fact that they don’t like sorgi as much as they claim. but it’s really a drastic shift from a guy as cool and collected and popular as sorgi to someone who’s supposedly inconsistent and unproven as a leader

Sorgi is still on the roster for two reasons
1) He’s Peyton’s film buddy / fellow strategist. I don’t think Sorgi will ever be a good NFL QB, but I do think he could be a good NFL coach.
2) Peyton doesn’t really need a backup. Until this changes, no reason not to have Sorgi around. But if it does change: thanks Jim, we’d like to offer you a coaching position.
my god TE brandon myers was even drafted. and good for him. BAD FOR HIM its oakland. UGGGGGGGGG but seriously brandon myers kings teammate gets drafted and NOT MITCH KING??
you can NOT tell me not one team is interested in a 6th or 7th round pick of the big ten lineman of the year, a 4 year starter who missed maybe one practice his entire career, the teams leader and a flat out winner??
unbelievable
I hate the pick. I don’t care whether he’s better or worse than Sorgi; the answer doesn’t matter because the question is irrelevant. I refuse to believe that there aren’t any linebackers left on the board that we like, and another LB is going to get a lot more playing time next year – and probably for at least the next three years – than another QB will.
Hopefully Follett, King and/or Cadogen fall
Or else this will piss me off even more.

Strengths:
Excellent size and bulk…Has a very strong leg…Handles pressure pretty well…Serious and focused on the field…Intelligent…Can also kick off… Versatile and can punt in a pinch …Team leader and captain.
Weaknesses:
Inconsistent…Not super accurate and missed his fair share of attempts…Had a major breakdown and missed two short field goals against Pitt in 2007…Needs to work on refining his mechanics and technique…Might be a bit of a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none.

Good
I think he will be our punter, especially if he could kick the 55+ yarders that Vinatieri can’t make.

True story
Trainer: Well coach he’s (the kicker) hurt pretty bad. I don’t think he can play
Bill Parcell’s: He doesn’t need to play; he just needs to kick.
He has the Big East record for most extra points in a career!
I dare you to find a player in this draft with a more impressive record than that one.

This dude has a sick leg
He was in the skills challenge. He crushed everyone. Was kicking the ball easily 65 yards under a time limit and only missed 1. When he’d kick it you’d only hear the “BOOM”. He’ll be good for kickoffs, long fieldgoals, and probably punting.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
Painter
He is not a horrible qb…Sorgi is horrible…I think that he will be an awesome backup for Peyton…Nothing can be worse than Sorgi will ever be
