Mocking the Draft hands out NFL Draft grades and praise for the Indianapolis Colts

Other than TheSportsGuru, JasonB, and myself, no one worked harder this past weekend than Mocking Dan, head writer at Mocking The Draft. He commented on nearly every pick, wrote recaps minutes after the draft ended, and was on top of the rookie free agent signings. Mocking Dan and I talked a lot since February about the Colts and their draft needs.

Below are some thoughts from Mocking Dan on the Colts and their 2009 NFL Draft.

On the first day players:

A team that had a great draft was Indianapolis. While a receiver wasn't added, Donald Brown is now the team's best running back. Fili Moala gives them a difference maker in the middle.

On the second day players:

Indianapolis hit with Austin Collie in round four. Other than that, Terrance Taylor at defensive tackle, cornerback Jerraud Powers and quarterback Curtis Painter are just decent selections.

His comments from open threads on Day One and Day Two:

I think LeSean McCoy is being put in a system in Philly that he can excel in. Brian Orakpo going to Washington is a good fit. Austin Collie to Indianapolis was a good pick.

[Third round pick Jerrard Powers is] a short but quick corner from Auburn. He’ll be good covering the slot. He really gets after the ball.
Good pick for Indianapolis. They clearly need a good defensive tackle. To me, Moala is the best one left. I really like Indianapolis’ draft so far. I’m sure Colts fans wanted a wide receiver, but this is a solid first day for them.

Painter and Powers

I agree with him on Painter and Powers, but Taylor is a much better selection than “decent”.

Taylor was one of the highest touted DTs going into this season. He was a 3 time state powerlifting champion and a heavyweight wrestling champion. That shows not only strength, but great athleticism. His statistics aren’t very high because he was playing a significant amount of time as a 3-4 NT. Combining both Moala and Taylor is going to completely change our weakness to running to a strength. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both Freeney and Mathis put up a career year. Moala and Taylor’s numbers won’t be statistically high, but they’ll definitely keep the double teams off of Mathis and Freeney and significantly improve both our pass rush and probably give us the best rushing defense we’ve had with Peyton under center.

Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
