"Don't tell me the Colts' choice of Donald Brown wasn't a wake-up call for Joseph Addai. Remember, the Colts' season ended when they couldn't gain 2 yards down the stretch in San Diego. Indy was the league's 31st-ranked rushing unit last year. If nothing else, this is the team's way of saying that won't do."

I thought that you wanted Shake, KR, and MRW to stop arguing about Addai...

How does this help that?

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Every time the Colts have played the KC Chiefs in the playoffs, they have gone on to at least the AFC Championship game.

Disagreement

I have absolutely no problem with people disagreeing on this topic. For the record, I think MRW and KingRichard are wrong in their assessment of Addai, but I respect their take. What we all agree on is this is a make or break year for Addai. If he wants to stay a Colt in 2010, he must produce and stay healthy this year.

ummm...

This comment seems like a quick scribble of thoughts.. means absolutely nothing.. There is no doubt in my mind the Colts still like Addai but he clearly was nicked up bad last year… He has played in a shared system his whole life and is better in a committee as well. Look at Carolina or even Jacksonville when they still had Taylor for what the colts want to do with Addai and Brown..

I think the move is a great one.. the more tape I’ve watched of Brown the more I love him..

Can he replace Addai as the “MAIN” guy? Maybe next year if he has a fantastic year but to be honest it will still be a 2 man system regardless with one getting 60% the other guy 40% of the touches..

O-Line

Just one more tid bit I wanted to talk about was the O-Line… The O-Line was the main problem with the run game last year. I thought that was quite obvious from my eyes and Caldwell actually tried to explain it in detail this weekend.

How u can just blame Addai I have no ideA?? We run as far as our line is.. every team does

if that was meant to be a reply to me above (it doesn't make sense here)

then you need to re-read the definition of ad hominem

consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the source making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim.

and really it wasn’t much of an attack. I didn’t make any claims about how good of a writer or person he was. My thought was that I wish I had supported someone I don’t disagree with so violently that threads have to be purged of our fights.

I never changed by position on him. We disagreed on where he fit in value wise for Indy. I was wrong, but you were wronger.

For the record

(not that it matters) I believe our run problem was a combination of an injury riddled O Line and an oft-injured Addai.

My first thought with the drafting of Brown was “I wonder how Hart is doing” – you just never know with the injury he’s re-couping from.

That said, I also agree that if Addai doesn’t produce this year, that’s it. I think this (Addai, Brown and Hart) will work out great…we could use some fresh legs rotating during the game, yes?

Besides, a little competition in camp never hurt anyone, did it?

Excellent points all.

I remember watching the play where Hart got rocked RIGHT on his knee. I really hope he can recover, seems like a good kid and it’d be terrible if his career is over before it even really began.

Addai is capable of doing so many things, but sometimes he suffers from Barry Saunders -itis in that when we need 2 tough yards, he’ll dance around looking for a cut instead of just going and getting those tough yards.

I like him a lot, but it’d be nice if Brown can be “Thunder” to Addai’s “Lightning”.

I think both Addai and the O-Line should take the blame.

Everyone goes back the the 2nd down where addai didnt hit the hole against SD…. but in the grand scheme of things we still had a 3rd and 2 to ICE the game with Manning, Marvin, Reggie, Gonzo, Dallas and Addai on the field… guess what happened the line gave up a sack.

Basically what i’s saying is that the line is to blame because all of our running backs pretty much averaged the same and each one of our backs were stopped on a 3rd and 1 at least once in key situations….

Where Addai gets the blame is that he is not any other back, he is a FIRST ROUNDER (Rhodes, Simpson, Hart are all late round picks or UDFA)… Also keep in mind Addai is a lot younger than Rhodes and has a lot less carries. Finally i feel Addai is soft because Rhodes and him ran behind the same line, yet Addai is always injured… and trust me this is not because he is a more physical back.

Bottom line is both need to IMPROVE a lot for us to have a real chance at winning the SB this year. Its only fair to say the line was young and with time will improve and Addai is not a great back but a good back that will get it done behind a good line.

Agree

as much as I didn’t want the 3rd and 2 play to fail, I had already prepared myself for it based on their performance all year in those situations.

I just hated it to be a sack like that, so Smith was forced to punt from the back of the endzone like that and gave them great field position.

You could tell how that game was going to end up as soon as they failed on that 3rd and 2. I’m actually a little surprised it went to OT. It just seemed like the Chargers were getting all of the breaks when it mattered.

Position

Its really simple; if Addai comes back healthy and runs well then we have two really good backs that can share the carries. If he continues to struggle then we have someone else in Brown. I really don’t see what is so controversial about that opinion. I think some people on this site are a little too loyal to players and they refuse to see when they make mistakes and by refusing to accept a problem then they only advocate the continuation of that problem.

The competition between Brown and Addai will only help the Colts and yes I do view it as a “wake up call” moment for Joseph Addai. The running game last year was as bad as I have ever seen for the Colts. I realize the O-Line struggled, but Addai also had the added advantage of playing with Peyton Manning whose skill forces teams to play their safeties deep. Addai never faced 8 guys in the box. In fact, he would often face Nickel defenses on first down and still we had no production.

The bottom line is that the drafting of Brown shows that Polian recognizes that at least a fair amount of the running problems last year were with the running backs. The case has been closes on that area of the debate.

by MasterRWayne on Apr 27, 2009 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

I don't really know which one of you guys I agree with most....

Although I prefer Addai to stop the dance routine, I have more issues with his inability to stay healthy than I do with him as a back in general. He can pass block well and does well catching out of the backfield. He struggles at times making big plays in the running game and is a little too inconsistent, but he isn’t a terrible back.

He does need someone there to shoulder some, if not most, of the load and help him out. I still think Addai should be the 1B guy; the change of pace back, where he was most effective in 06. Rhodes started most of those games in 06 and Addai came in later and performed at his best.

I think the Brown pick will help Addai a lot. I also think Brown should be the starter until proven otherwise.

I would like to see Chad Ocho Cinco traded to a team that already has a #85 on the roster. Then, I would like to see #85 refuse to give up his jersey number to Chad Ocho Cinco. That would make my day....

by AceOfSpades on Apr 27, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree Ace...

But my issue, just as BROWNdude said above, is that Addai is a first round pick. Now I know that most backs can’t shoulder the load, but we’ve never really asked him to do that. Its not like we have been giving him 35-30 carries a game for several weeks in a row.

Yeah he has some upside and there are things I like about him, but for a first round pick he has underperformed.

by MasterRWayne on Apr 27, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree 100%

I think he is overrated as a 1st Round pick and should be a complimentary back. I think Brown should be the starter next year with Addai coming in to relieve him

I would like to see Chad Ocho Cinco traded to a team that already has a #85 on the roster. Then, I would like to see #85 refuse to give up his jersey number to Chad Ocho Cinco. That would make my day....

by AceOfSpades on Apr 27, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with your first paragraph...

I dont think theres any argument to go against it. I’m really excited about the running attack, but the line also has to play alot better than what they did last year (that case should be closed too). I still believe it wasnt just Addai though and I know you pointed this out a bit, but the line was giving him and Rhodes a brick wall to run through at times whether it was against nickel defenses or not and Peytons early knee injury kind of screwed things up also obvisouly (even though him being healthy 2nd half of the season did not change things too much). In the end though, adding Brown will only make things better and will help make the running game more explosive.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Apr 27, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Haven't the Colts always had issues with 3rd and Short situations?

Several times, with several different backs, the Colts have tried and failed to get that critical 3rd and short gain that would score a TD, clinch a game or simply sustain an important drive. Edge in 03 comes to mind first.

I think Addai’s style prevents him from getting more short yardage execution, although sometimes his style is exactly why he DOES make short yardage plays at other times (ex: 3rd and goal at end of 06 AFCCG).

IMO, it is a mixture of the type of back we have AND the type of O-Line players we draft and probably in some part due to the way they are coached. There is more of an emphasis on whether they can pass protect than run block and I am fine with that. It might just be something that we are all going to have to continue to deal with in the future too.

I would like to see Chad Ocho Cinco traded to a team that already has a #85 on the roster. Then, I would like to see #85 refuse to give up his jersey number to Chad Ocho Cinco. That would make my day....

philosophy change on both lines. . . . .

adding more size to interiors of both lines. More large butt kickers to open holes for the run and stop it when playing ‘D’.
Get Peyton on the field for three or four more series per game, and see what that does to stress the opponents defense more than ours. I’m sick (and so is BP) of watching the league run at will and dominate time of possession.
On offense, we need to settle on the three inside guys, start Charlie J. at right tackle, and all help pull Tony Ugoh’s big head out of his arse and light that arse on fire.
Run the ball hard and often, and shut down some teams and limit the rest when on ‘D’ with our bigger studs up front.
Then Peyton can relax and not feel like he’s got to strap the entire team on his back. Even without Marvin, he has more than enough weapons to take any defense apart.

Last year

We started two rookies at center and right guard for a portion of the year, Marvin was not a feared receiver, Diem decided to suck, Ugoh was absent and Lilja was hurt. Looking back, we are lucky that we made the playoffs with the shit offensive line we had. That’s why Peyton Manning is the best QB in league history. 12 wins with that O-line is ridiculous. With Jamey Richard and Mike Pollak turning into experienced players and a small chance Lilja can play at some point next year, our running game would have improved whether or not we drafted Brown or not.

2007 showed how good Lilja and Scott are. It’s a shame we couldn’t resign Scott because he is one of the top guards in the AFC. The Ugoh-Lilja-Saturday-Scott-Diem line was amazing and of course the 2006 line with Glenn is historic. We should be back to the 2007 level next year, but I don’t trust the tackles. Robinson and Santi need to do a good job blocking this year to have continued success running.

A good running back will not produce behind a bad line. It’s as simple as that. A healthy Colts O-line will make Addai and Brown one of the most feared duos in the league. No matter what we drafted Brown for, the next two years are huge for Addai. Brown is a great back and Addai needs to perform to keep his job and to get a good paycheck when his rookie contract is up.

Yup, yup.

If anyone doesn’t think an offensive line is that important, just look at a team like Kansas City when they had Roaf and Shields. They went from 1st in rushing for what – 4 plus years? – to nearly nothing but people blamed Holmes and Johnson instead of the worse O-line.
