At least
I have absolutely no clue who will be our starters. I’d actually have a hard time seeing it as much different than last year. The only likely scenario is Hagler beats out Keiaho, and I’m not to sure about that happening.
So the competition right now is :
WILL – Keiaho, Hagler, (Session), Okwo, Humber, Alexander, Senn
MIKE – Brackett, Seward
SAM – (Session), Wheeler, *Foote
The Foote comment is put in there due to
“Colts | Interested in acquiring Foote

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports the Indianapolis Colts are believed to be interested in acquiring Pittsburgh Steelers LB Larry Foote. "
I would’ve rather have drafted one to clear this craziness up. Looks like the competition for WILL is going to be craaaazy. Although, I really do like that the Colts may get Foote. I’d like to see them go after Leroy Hill (Seahawks) too.

Foote has indicated that Detroit is #1 for him
Not sure how realistic it is for us to get him

I saw
The option of actually being on a well run team that might actually do something that’s closer than Pittsburgh might be something he takes into consideration.

I don't see Freddie K as a starter this year
more of a backup / special teams guy now. Caldwell is trying to put his stamp on this team and moving in a different direction.
I would like to see how this lineup would perform….
WILL – Session
MIKE – Brackett
SAM – Seward or Hagler
I would like to see Chad Ocho Cinco traded to a team that already has a #85 on the roster. Then, I would like to see #85 refuse to give up his jersey number to Chad Ocho Cinco. That would make my day....

hard to say that they are going in a different direction
when they are re-signing the same guys.
Also Wheeler?

true
signing a guy like Foote would be a true statement that they are making some changes on D. Not necessarily as a sign that they are thinking about a future 3-4, but a commitment to having a solid run D and having a more physical presence.

I like this signing, but only if its to bring back Keiaho as depth. Wheeler is too talented to keep on the bench.

I don't see the fascination with Keiaho
At best his performance the past two seasons has stayed at a level plane, not improved like we would all like to see. In 06, I loved his goal line presence and ability to make solid tackles, but over time, as he has been given more and more playing time, his weaknesses are becoming more and more evident. He often over pursues and is average in coverage.
They could get those qualities in a UFA for less money.

He was the second best LB on the team
I understand Session looked good at times, but that was a small snapshot and he may not have performed as well at WILL. He didn’t have to cover as much at SAM. They had to move Keiaho to MIKE because everyone else sucked.
I understand he might’ve sucked, but that doesn’t change that he was still the second best LB on the team. And considering we know pretty much zilch about everyone set to compete, I’d still say it’s Keiaho’s job to lose right now.

I'd say before Session figured it out around midseason
Keiaho was the second best.
Then the lightbulb went off and Session was #2

And that's what we thought about Keiaho
Until his jacked up his elbow. Not to mention that was Session at a position that isn’t as complicated as WILL. Just because someone can play RT doesn’t mean they can play LT. That mistake has been made several times before.

Okay
but you can arguably say that Cato June was the 2nd best LB on the team too a couple years ago and they figured out that he could be improved upon. I think KO is alright, but not starting material.

If he’s starting material for our team then he’s starting material. Period. Who on the team would you rather replace him? The fact that players are either in the “awesome” category or the “chump” category is really getting old. I may not think Keiaho’s the best LB out there, but if he’s the one of the bests LB on our team he’s a starter regardless of what anyone’s assessment of his ability is.
The fickleness is really starting to get on my nerves. “Addai is awesome! Addai sucks! Keiaho’s awesome! Keiaho sucks!”

At the risk of getting flamed..............
I never agreed with all the bad mouthing of Keiho. He is one of my favorites. Hold on, let me tell you why. First my oldest son played against him in High School. Second, don’t tell me that when a guy local to you winds up on your favorite team that he isn’t instantly one of your favorites. Next, the dude did everything ever asked of him including playing all three linebacker position and did a good job doing it. I find Keiho to be a sideline to sideline guy who never quits. Until he was cut loose, I thought he had Pro Bowl potential. OK, now come and get me.

I don’t hate the guy, I just think he is better suited as a backup and ST player, not a starter. If signed at vet minimum, it would be good value. I just think they can upgrade over his skills when it comes to a starting LB

Session
is better suited for WILL than Kieaho. Session has better coverage abilities and is improving week after week. Kieaho could be the backup WILL but hasn’t shown to me that he should be the starter. My most recent impression of him was how horrible he looked in the SD loss.
WILL – Session
MIKE – Brackett
SAM – Hagler, Wheeler or Seward
IMO Keiaho is a backup to Session and a ST guy. An insurance policy.

Eh
not what I was saying. He shouldn’t be a starter because they have better guys on the team already than he is. He should be a backup and a ST guy. Vet minimum is fine, but I don’t think they should overpay for a backup.
1. He WAS cut and as of now hasn’t been re-signed. If they wanted him to be the starter they wouldn’t have cut him in the first place
2. I think they are considering re-signing him because they didn’t find any jackpot LBs in the draft so they wanted to bring back someone with experience in the system.
In your defense, if they do re-sign him it doesn’t guarantee that he will actually be on the 53 man roster. The could still release him again.

he wasn't cut
he hit the playing time incentives needed to void the last year of his rookie contract. They didn’t offer him an RFA tender. It’s not a ringing endorsement of him, but it’s not being cut.

It can be interpreted a few different ways
Technically he wasn’t “cut” but, to me, it says “Looking at your contract, we have the ability to release you now with little skin off our back….so we’re gonna go ahead and do that.”

They didn't release him
That’s where you’re not following. It wasn’t up to the COLTS to keep Keiaho, it was up to Keiaho if he wanted to play for the Colts or not. They could’ve offered him 2 mil/yr instead of putting a tender on him because they wanted to lock him up in a lower salary than he would get if he signed a tender and made the pro bowl this season. None of us have any clue how the Colts feel about the situation. At the time they would’ve had to tender him, we were literally fast approaching the eleventh hour and almost didn’t sign Saturday. We didn’t have any money for a pro bowler who’d been there his entire career that everyone loved.
And now we have more room under the cap, so we may offer him what he’s either looking for, or he found out that there’s not much interest in an undersized Colt LB that generally fail out of T2 systems. But we don’t know.
Like I said, the Colts don’t have any control over Keiaho right now. The fact that Keiaho wasn’t seen going to Indy tells you that he was exploring all his options.

Completely understand
And agree. If Keiaho is the starter, that’d be a sign that he started to show the potential he flashed in his rookie year. I actually have a feeling our LBs may be Okwo (WILL), Bracket, and Session.
Pretty much, with all the LBs (and the majority are battling for the WILL position), I think it’s safe to say that if Keiaho’s starting he’s reverted to the form that people liked or if someone else is starting, it’s probably an upgrade.

It's not semantics
There’s a HUGE difference between being cut and reaching the incentives in your contract that were placed in there if you perform well enough to get something that’s intended to be beneficial for you. The reason why other teams don’t want to touch Keiaho are because there are only a handful of T2 teams left and the failure of drafting Colts defensive players for different systems is generally the norm. Not always, but generally. But that’s not semantics at all. In fact, those two situations are the very antithesis of each other. One is a reward, and one is not.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
by monstersbox on Apr 29, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
To me, a reward of having ability to be a starter and the confidence of your coaching staff is a new contract; not being allowed to see what else might be out there because we don’t think you are worth starting money but we’ll talk about taking you back after we shop around for something better in FA and in the draft.
Obviously we’ll see if he is going to be the starter or not in a few months, but I think they brought him back to be a backup and a ST player.
There is a new ST coach that is dead set on improving that part of the team so he probably wants some veterans out there and not just rookies like in the past.
