Colts trying to acquire Steelers LBer Larry Foote
I want to know what alien race abducted Bill Polian and replaced him with this clone that seems to want to draft 300 pound defensive linemen and acquire veteran linebackers:
While there is speculation that the Detroit Lions would like to sign linebacker Larry Foote if he becomes an unrestricted free agent, the reality is that Foote is still employed by someone else."Contrary to media reports, Larry Foote is still a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers,'' said Kevin Colbert, the team's director of football operations.
...
"The information that's out there is erroneous,'' Colbert said.
According to a source close to the situation, the Lions had previously offered a seventh-round pick for Foote, but the Steelers turned it down. The Indianapolis Colts are also believed to be very interested in acquiring Foote.
Um, WHAT!
When has we EVER seen the Colts try to trade draft picks (or anything) for a veteran linebacker? If MLive.com's Tom Kowalskiand his sources are correct, this is a major departure for Polian and the Colts front office.
One thing is for sure, if Indy gets Foote, they will likely not re-sign Freddie Keiaho. The interesting side story on Foote is he once took a few shots at Howard Mudd following the 2005 playoff game between the Colts and Steelers.
From a little post I wrote three years ago titled Larry Foote = whiny b!tch:
Colts offensive line coach Howard Mudd said this when he was asked about teams copying the Steelers gameplan against the Colts:
"Teams are going to look at (Pittsburgh and San Diego) and say, 'Let's try to do the same thing,' " he said. "If they see somebody they think stopped you for a week, they're going to come out and try to do some of the very same things.''Steelers linebacker Larry Foote responded to Mudd's comments:
Take your best shot, replied Mudd. And that includes the Steelers, should they meet again this postseason.
"I'm very respectful of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Mudd said. "They won. They are the champions and I respect them. But the Pittsburgh Steelers did not beat the Colts. The Colts beat the Colts.
"Let's go play again. Right now."
"He said we didn't beat them?" Foote said. "What happened on the defensive side of the ball, when our offense was driving up and down the field on them? He didn't say anything about the interception we had (by strong safety Troy Polamalu) that the referees called back?Psst, Larry. You see that part where Howard Mudd says he respects you, and calls you champion? Did you somehow miss that, or are you just a whiny b!tch with a first grade reading level? Or, even worse, did you just accept whatever the reporter fed you without first consulting the source?"Tell him they were outcoached."
Let's just say that if Larry is brought in to hear the sacred Blue Shoe helmet, there could be some interesting developments between him and Howard Mudd.

NFL.com shows that Foote has been cut
Not sure if that’s just a timing thing, or what…

NFL.com now NOT showing that he's been cut
except if you filter specifically on the Steelers or on April 2009… whoopsie!

yeah i saw it on espn.com earlier today
but they might have had an incorrect report as well. Anyways, my first thought was “hmm, I wonder if the Colts would even consider going after him. He’d probably be a starter right away…”
"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

HOLY HORSESHOE!
If Larry Foote becomes a Colt, then there is a devil and I will be “forking” my soul over to him…

From what I understand
the Colts would have to be willing to give up more in a trade then the Lions. Foote said that when he is cut Detroit is #1 on his list because he grew up there. Im sure the Lions would also offer him a better contract. So unless he changes his mind, I don’t see him coming to Indy.
Is it April 25th yet?

If we bring in Foote
the move will not make sense to me. I understand he was a MLB in the 3-4, but thats just it, he was a 3-4 backer. I do not feel he posses the athleticism we require in our system and although we are getting bigger, this is still a T2 system. Unless they want to use this guy as a situational blitzer or something, its just confusing as to why the Colts are pursuing him.

the reason why I bring up Foote being an MLB
is because they have more coverage responsibilities. So the only sense I can make of this move, if the Colts do indeed make it, is that Foote is bigger, can blitz, and has some semblance of coverage ability. I still dont see Polian making the move since I just dont see any athleticism Foote that leads me to believe he will be a good fit.

and I was about ready to say that the talk of a changes at LB were overblown
with Hagler, and possibly Keiaho returning and no LBs taken in the draft.
But this would be a change, a 3-4 ILB would be a much bigger stouter type than the usual Colts LB.

I would rather have Foote than KO
More of a veteran presence, bigger with more tackling ability and since Keiaho can’t cover either all I see are plusses when I compare Foote to him.
I would like to see Chad Ocho Cinco traded to a team that already has a #85 on the roster. Then, I would like to see #85 refuse to give up his jersey number to Chad Ocho Cinco. That would make my day....

i would be shocked
if he came to the Colts. he has a couple super bowl rings already. he would be looking for a payday and doubt it would come from Indy. Detroit has a big need that they failed to address in the draft at LB.
If the Colts did sign him, that makes a huge statement about our commitment to getting the run defense improved. i wouldnt be upset to see him on the team.

I dont think it will happen... but it wouldnt surprise me.
If you look at Coyer’s D’s they have always been able to stop the run… and i feel like bringing Foote would only improve the run D. The other thing i think the Colts are doing is allowing our skill players to do what they do best. I feel like the DB’s and Safety’s dont have to worry about stopping the run, they can play pass all the time, as our DT’s and backers would (or atleast in theory should) stop the run… another thing this does is allows Freeney and Brock to rush the passer even on run downs. The last couple years our D ends were asked to play the run first, but now they dont need to as much. SO if teams try to pass on run downs, there would still be pressure on the QB and our DB’s would be in position to defend. Ala GOOD THINGS WILL HAPPEN.
LT, Sproles, MJD, Chris Johnson, White… the run all you want buffet is over….. and what that means to QB’s is… IT IS ON U TO OUTSCORE PEYTON MANNING (Ok i know thats not possible)
(I CAN DREAM RIGHT?)

what was your Addai bet with chad? (reference to the Larry Foote=whiney bitch post)

Oh my God
Memory lane there: I believe Chad bet me that Joseph Addai wouldn’t rush for 1,000 yards his rookie year, and that he would be a bust of a rookie. While he ran for over 1,000 yards his rookie year, I had the added bonus of watching Addai running all over Chad’s favorite team in the Super Bowl. :)

I can't wait
for teams to go out there with the “let’s run on them and control the clock” strategy and immediately have their running backs get killed by Terrance Taylor and Fili Moala. The Colts have a run defense now. Uh-oh, NFL.
"I saw a commercial on late night TV, it said,'Forget everything you know about slipcovers.' So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were."

That's why I am excited that we open with Jacksonville
The team that has done that to the run defense over and over. I am looking forward to seeing MJD get smashed by Taylor.

best way to not get your ass kicked . . . . .
Have more ass kickers than the other guys.
Cornelius Lewis type guys. Terrance Taylor type guys. Bob Sanders type guys. Jaimie Thomas type guys. Jeff Saturday type guys . . .Fili Moala . . . . . . get it?
Not everybody on the roster has to be a highly skilled weapon for Peyton. Let’s line up and hit the other guy in the mouth and see how he likes it. While he’s stopping his mouth from bleeding, Peyton is lighting him up.
Coach Caldwell said we need to “run the ball better and stop the run when on defense”.
I love Tony Dungy as an amazing human being and football man, but it became painfully obvious to us all that we can get more physical, then allow Peyton to dissect an opponent once they’ve been bitch-slapped by our ass-kickers for a while.
The sound of thunder should permeate from training camp when the guys put on the pads.
And maybe we’ll stop having to listen to the talking heads refer to The Colts as a “soft dome team”.
Hooray, ass-kickers!!

though it's easy to go too far in that direction
and be like the Jags, kicking ass after the whistle in key situations drawing crippling personal foul penalties.

Shake- you are quite right. I don’t advocate that extra-curricular crap. That’s low class. I’m simply saying that games are won in the trenches, and what that translates to is whipping the guy across from you. Dominate the poor slob . . . . .open holes for YOUR guys on offense, and stuff ‘em on defense.
I love the direction Polian and Caldwell are taking this squad. Like Emeril, it’s very much time to “kick it up a notch” and add a big pinch of “nasty” to the talent level already in place.
But play by the rules at all times.
And at all times . . .GO COLTS!!!

I just looked at the comments on that Larry Foote=Whinny Bitch story. The head blogger of Arrowhead Pride now looks like an idiot for saying “Peyton ‘I want to be Dan Marino’ Manning”.
Nice try Chris, Manning has destroyed Marino

If they are going to sign a veteran linebacker, why not go after Derrick Brooks? He’s a lot better than Foote.

Depends on length of contract if true
If the Colts just want a one year filler role, I would agree. If they want three years or more, they would have to get the younger player. Foote is 28, Brooks is 36.

where would foote play
I believe he is a middle LB. So if for some reason we do pick him up, where does Brackett play? Do you move one of them outside to play will or sam. By doing that you then make the defense slower. I could be wrong but I dont see either Foote or Brackett out running Wheeler or Sessions to the ball. Your thoughts?
by rcalvert1979 on Apr 30, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He'd play SAM
The way they used him at ILB was very similar to a SAM in a 4-3. The main difference between a 3-4 is a 4-3 is you pretty much stand up a DE and call him a “OLB”. If we stood Mathis or Brock (which we did a few times) and backed him a yard off the line, technically that’d be a 3-4. But it’s the same thing as being in a 4-3, standing up your DE, and calling the SAM a ILB.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
