Woo, man the drama
I guess Raji, Mathews and Cushing decided it was too slow this offseason.

Rick Serritella, of NFLDraftBible.com, reports Southern California LB Brian Cushing and LB Clay Matthews tested positive for steroids at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to various sources, including one NFL team.
These three developments are definitely going to change the mocks. The Raji one could slide, but this is pretty serious. Think they can dole out 4 game suspensions to rookies? Ouch. Good job morons.
Jesus, I guess I should've scrolled down a little more. I guess it doesn't matter since everyone decided to fail their drug tests.

Rick Seritella, of NFLDraftBible.com, reports Texas-El Paso PK Jose Martinez, University of Illinois CB Vontae Davis and University of Florida WR Percy Harvin failed drug tests for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Guess I can stop talking about Matthews and Percy. Damn. Don't really care about Matthews, but damn you Percy, damn you. On the bright side, maybe he'll definitely be there at 27 now eh? So we can pass on him for "character" issues.

It amazes me
that these guys could be so stupid. They are going to the NFL Scouting Combine, where they test everything about you. Heck, they even do an intelligence test (which may or may not actually determine how intelligent you are). Did they honestly think that there wouldn’t be a drug test? They couldn’t cut off the steroids or dope for 1 month? Those mistakes just cost them millions of dollars, and quite frankly, they don’t deserve that money now.
And yes monstersbox, I believe that the NFL can dole out 4 game suspensions to rookies. It is worthy to note however, that the ones who used the weed won’t get suspended. It would be the first step in the NFL’s escalated scale with non-steroid drug abuse. 1st is a warning and entrance into a mandatory random testing program. 2nd is a 4 game suspension. 3rd is a 1 year suspension.
I agree
Doing steroids in the current climate is pretty dumb no matter what, but if you like to get high from time to time, you have to know when to take a break for job reasons. I have plenty of friends in their early 20’s that stop smoking weed from time to time so they can get a job and they’re not about to get paid millions.
I am a little more doubtful that the NFL can suspend them for stuff they do while they’re not in the NFL. I imagine the random testing won’t be so random for these players, but otherwise it seems like they won’t be suspended or anything.
Thirdly, conspiracy theory, what if these players wanted to get drafted by a certain time but thought that they’d get picked too early. So they purposely test positive for stuff so that their draft stock will slide and they can go to the team they want to. Eh? Okay that’s stupid, sorry.
"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."
I don’t give a crap about the marijuana pop, it’s the steroids I don’t approve of. I always knew I didn’t like those USC LBs for some reason, I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Didn’t get to add this…
Don’t worry though folks, San Diego and New Englad will definintely draft Mathews and Cushing.

Haha
No doubt. All this did is make them their type of player. And you’re right, I don’t really give a crap about the pot one, but the Colts do. Or at least Dungy did.
I’m just going to have to push my only other option for receiver since I can’t use a guy that probably would’ve been drafted before 27 as the guy I was pushing. Ready for it? The Colts should use their 2nd round draft pick to “draft”….Lance Moore. The Saints are actually in much worse cap shape than the Colts are. All we have to do is give the pick, probably put out 1.6 million salary wise (the tender is 1.545) and there you go. A second round “draft” pick I can agree with. I mean, if you think about it, that’d be about the price for a low first round or high second round pick anyway. It’d only be about 200k more than Sorgi and Gonzo make and less than Addai.

Put a Colts uniform on that dude BP. Please? And by the way, I’ve listened to 2 or 3 interviews with him on Sirius, he’s extremely intelligent. And he definitely looks like he’s having fun while he’s playing. Not in an obnoxious way either. And when they were losing, you notice he wasn’t celebrating. And that’s a dude that could contribute next year over any rookie. Not to mention he’s only a year older than Gonzo. That’d be a pretty nice receiving corps.
I was actually waiting for you to do the wide receiver pipe dream thing Richard. But since you’re a slacker, I guess I’ll just put it here.
Alright, everyone jump aboard the Lance Moore RFA and Peyton Hillis (6th round draft pick) train.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
That’s actually pretty interesting. Lance Moore probably would have better stats if there weren’t 452385295 receivers on the Saints for Brees to throw to.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Hh and as for the slacker comment…yeah so what? I’m finally caught up on all my school work and stuff and I can finally post the voice of the fan article that has been sitting there waiting to be finished, and another pipe dream post.

I am all about that
Lance Moore could be the poor man’s Stokely, and not that poor.
Hmmm
Thought: Stokley is still a Bronco, yes? Could we get him back for vet minimum? Would he be worth it? I miss that guy.

I'm not so sure he'll be worth it...
Stokley just got around his 12th concussion this year and is still as injury prone as ever. We already have enough problems with injuries to sign someone who is injury prone, even for the vet minimum.
This is not a knock on Stokley. He is one of my favorite players ever and one of only 2 players I’ve ever shaken hands with, but he’s just not worth it….
Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.
Man, I need a life...
Ah. That's right...
Forgot about all of the concussions. (duh)

Marijuana use has it's own complications
Kevin Faulk missed the first game of the season last year on a one-game suspension for marijuana possession at a Lil’ Wayne concert. Consequently, Sammy Morris played in his spot and didn’t take K.C. Chiefs’ Bernard Pollard down hard enough before he got up and blew out Brady’s knee for the season.
See kids? Marijuana is baaaaaaaaaaad.
Keep the faith!
We have also had recent experience with the pot issue.
Anyone remember that DT we had, you know, Ed “take a toke” Johnson? I don’t like any drug issues. I don’t care if someone wants to spark up a doobie now and then, but the Colts do – therein lies the rub.

What you do in your own time...
Is your decision. But what you do on your employer’s time – and with the drug regime in the NFL, that includes the whole season – is not. You have an obligation to take your high profile role in the public eye seriously and live up to the standards the public expects of professional athletes.
Don’t like it? Go work at Walmart.

Percy!?!
I was excited about the idea of having Harvin. If this is true I don’t think the Colts will look past it. A little disappointed.
WOW!!!
I have to say that is quite a large number of players being really stupid!! I don’t remember this ever before…not in these numbers. What is it with these kids…all of them..not just the roid guys but the pot guys too.
Unlike some of you I am totally against drugs of all kinds. Pot, roids, meth…it does not matter. Last time I checked it was illegal. And these guys must be total idiots to think they would get away with it. I wouldn’t draft any of these guys….and I was a huge Matthews guy. I want to swear…but this is a community site.
Idiots is all I can say.
As for Matthews…I kinda thougth he may have been on the juice at some point. I think he cam into USC at aroud 160 lbs. Quite a big jump in weight eh? I would have also thougth of all those guys to do something really stupid it would have been Mauluga (sp)!! Guess that shows what I know.
i could have sworn that dom rhodes was suspended for marijuana use that year he was with the raiders…
That was a DUI.

before the Colts released him (or didn’t re-sign him, however you want to put it), if memory serves.

DUI
Legal troubles
On February 20, 2007 Rhodes was driving 81 mph (130 km/h) in a 55 mph (89 km/h) zone on Interstate 65 in Indianapolis, Indiana at 3 a.m. He was pulled over by the Indiana State Police and arrested for drunk driving.2 Rhodes claimed at the time that he had only “two or three” alcoholic drinks; he failed two sobriety tests with a blood alcohol content of .09.3 He has subsequently pleaded guilty and on March 21, 2007, was given a suspended 180-day sentence and fined $2,000 4.
But that does bring up a very valid point. Why is driving while intoxicated (which is an illegal act and actually a much worse offense than smoking marijuana because well you can KILL someone) okay and smoking isn’t? And actually, we cut Johnson because it was a one strike and you’re out. Who knows, maybe the Colts will take a chance if one of burnouts fall, but I doubt it. I just think it’s a double standard that’s out of control.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
Johnson
I think he was held to a different standard. From my understanding he had some problems at Pitt. Joe-Pa had to vouch for him before the Colts signed him – at least that’s what I heard…could be urban legend for all I know.
At any rate, the reigns on him were tight from the beginning and he was made aware of it.
Personally, I think drunk driving may be worse than smoking weed. Alot more people die as a result. I’m not a proponent of marijuana either, but really, what does the most damage? -
Good point, monstersbox, if 1 is bad, they ALL should be bad and carry similar consequences.

Marijuana
Really has no long term side effects. They just finished a 20 year study that proved it doesn’t cause cancer, or at least until they do another study. The only way to overdose for pot is to smoke 60 lbs in a second. Or at least that’s the theoretical overdose limit. The only reason why alcohol is legal and pot isn’t is because the mob controlled the distribution of alcohol during prohibition and gained vasts amounts of wealth. They were both made illegal under prohibition, but since it really didn’t matter because you could just go into your back yard and grow it yourself, the mob had no use for it. And the only way you were going to get something other than moonshine or arsenic was to buy from the mob. And now we spend BILLIONS per year to stop college students from playing video games, eating Funyuns, and laughing.
Think about that for a second. Actually, I’ll do one of my things where I put a : and list stuff……… :
Side effects from alcohol -
1. Internal organ damage to the brain and liver. A major cause for dementia for long term drinkers.
2. You have one of four options of what happens at a party
a) You vomit and end up being quiet for the rest of the night
b) You end up being the annoying dude that gets stuffed into a closet for the amusement of everyone else
d) You do something that you regret the next day
d) You die
3. The reason you get drunk is because you’re cutting off oxygen to your brain and slowly shutting your system down. Yeah, nice.
There’s many more, but this isn’t health class.
Side effects from smoking :
1. You engage in silly conversations and are generally fun to be around
2. You eat
3. You sleep
4. And…you eat
Mmmk. There’s no competitive advantage from smoking. I’m not saying that should exempt them. I mean it is a law, but it’s a pretty stupid one. I actually have several friends that are cops that say it’s BS and they don’t make a big deal out of it.
Jim Sorgi runs a 4.6 40. That's all I've got to say about that.
In California
“medical” marijuana is legal. I am actually in favor of legalizing it all together…the taxes that could be collected as a result would be staggering…
It doesn’t do it for me, but who am I to tell somebody else what to do? My biggest problem with it in sports is that it does affect the team. Whether it be through suspensions or a player being released (Johnson) the team pays the price too.

Oh, I forgot to add:
you can make that 5 possible outcomes resulting from the use of alcohol:
e) you kill someone else

I disagree with 2's lack of the option I always fall into
f. sit around talking until the depressant effect overwhelms the lack of inhibition and I end up (blacked out and) sitting by myself eyes closed, head bobbing to the music, dopey smile on my face and not speaking unless spoken to (and not opening my eyes if I am talking.
I’m a really chill drunk.
I got Summer hatin' on me cuz I'm hotter than the sun. Spring hatin' on me cuz I ain't never sprung
Winter hatin' on me cuz I'm colder than Y'all. And I will never, I will never, I will never Fall.

Actually
there was a study that speculated marijuana may actually help prevent cancer — lung cancer in particular — by killing old or damaged cells before they turn cancerous. God wish I could find the link, I believe it was in the Washington Post last year….
Ya unlike alcohol, you dont hear about someone beating their wife or going to rehab for pot. I drink every weekend, but i think its the more harmful of the two.
by ColtsPurdueFanFromKY on Apr 3, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions
You guys are missing the point!!!
When you smoke pot you are doing it to alter your state of being…not everyone drinks to get drunk!!! I drink a beer every day after work, after I cut the grass, while watching a game…heck I may even drink two!! But I am not doing it to get drunk…to alter my thought process…to destroy my liver and internal organs. Your arguments make the assumption that everyone who drinks is doing so to excess…while in actuality the pot smoking is to excess!!
I totally agree there is a double standard here!!! Johnson got a pretty raw deal..I also recall that Rhodes has some domestic issues as well, but it never seemed to hurt him in the Colts eyes.
Lastly, I will not be an apologist for pot smoking…making it legal because it is no worse than alcohol. It is against the law and until it isn’t there should be a penalty for it.
Thanks for reading.
Me personally, I wouldn’t let something like this persuade me not to draft someone if he is going to help my time out. However, that doesn’t mean I’m just going to let this guy do what he wants. I’d explain to him in very clear terms that if you do something stupid, your ass is grass. Of course you can always put stuff in his contract that stipulates if so and so were to pop on a drug test, be arrested, etc, that his contract is null and void. If that doesn’t deter them from being an idiot nothing will.

I think you can roll the dice more with undrafted free agents than with a first round pick with the millions of dollars in seperation and the value of that first pick. At the time, Johnson was a given a chance and would not have cost the Colts too much, but unfortunately he smoked out which in turn eventually did hurt the Colts with the interrior of the line in ’08.

I would think knowing that you are going to get drug tested at the combine, but yet fail is up there in all stupidness and should raise some question marks on his intelligence. I’m sure I would think twice just a bit before giving that player millions of dollars while rolling the dice on a first round pick. Theres no room for misses with that pick, so those actions would persuade just a bit.

Everyone knew Cushing used 'roids
No one could put on that much muscle over a career. He was fat a couple of years ago and now he’s ripped. Matthews surprised me.
"I saw a commercial on late night TV, it said,'Forget everything you know about slipcovers.' So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were."
-Mitch Hedberg
My disappointment..
is very deep for these players!!! They are young and have done something that could reall affect the rest of their lives. Cushing and Matthews moreso because of the performance enhancing that they are doing…on the other hand it hasn’t hurt Merriman has it? Anyway, I wish some of these players would think beyond tomorrow when making personal decisions.
Seeing the mock drafts on the television last night I must say that none of the drafts had really lowered any of these guys in the draft? Kinda surprising/or not?
It’s not surprising to me. Teams like the Chargers and Patriots are still going to draft these guys because they can produce and they really don’t care if they were juicing or not.
