Apparently the Colts don't draft well

According to Pat Kirwin, the Steelers, Eagles, Packers, Giants, Ravens, Patriots, Falcons and Dolphins have drafted better then Colts over the past 5 years. Here's the link.

Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts! Go Colts!

i listen to Pat Kirwan's radio show everyday

on my way home from work. though its a bummer he didnt list the Colts in his article. i can say that he does think highly of Indy as ive heard him say a lot of great things about the francise.

I know. I have read some nice pieces by him over the years relating to the Colts which is why I was surprised to see him leave the Colts out in this article.

The Colts have...

12 players drafted 2005 and later who are starters at various positions on the roster.
7 players drafted before 2005 who are starters at various positions on the roster.
And 2-3 starting positions which are most likely about to be filled by players drafted 2005 and later in the 2009 season.

By my math that is 21-22 starting positions on the team by Colts draft picks. Proof? Okay.

Current starters drafted 2005 and later:
1) RB Joseph Addai -2006
2) WR Anthony Gonzalez – 2007
3) OT Tony Ugoh – 2007
4) G Mike Pollak – 2008
5) G Charlie Johnson – 2006
6) DT Keyunta Dawson – 2007
7) LB Clint Session – 2007
8) LB Freddy Keiaho – 2006
9) CB Marlin Jackson – 2005
10) CB Kelvin Hayden – 2005
11) CB Tim Jennings – 2006
12) FS Antoine Bethea – 2006

Current starters drafted 2004 and earlier:
1) QB Peyton Manning – 1998
2) WR Reggie Wayne – 2001
3) TE Dallas Clark – 2003
4) OT Ryan Diem – 2001
5) DE Dwight Freeney – 2002
6) DE Robert Mathis – 2003
7) S Bob Sanders – 2004

Positions about to be filled by 2005 and later draft picks:
1) 3 WR
2) 2 TE
3) DT

This does not include previous 2005 and later draft picks who will be replaced by other 2005 and later draft picks in the same position – potentially LG, OLB, DT, Nickelback

Only non-drafted starters on the team entering 2009 season?
1) TE – Gijon Robinson
2) C – Jeff Saturday
3) DE – Raheem Brock
4) LB – Gary Brackett
5) DT – Eric Foster

Hint:

Every starting caliber player in 2008, transitioning to 2009 has something in common.

EDIT

Every starting caliber player in 2008, transitioning to 2009 that WAS NOT drafted by the Colts has something in common.

Very good points

Notice that no one on that list of “non drafted Colts” was DRAFTED AT ALL (or they were a late rounder from someone else’s waivers)! Ding, ding, ding!

I think the long and short of it is that it’s pretty obvious that the Colts draft well because they never look into free agency to fill roster holes. Primarily, if the team signs a free agent, he’s a UDFA/waiver claim, not some big name acquisition from another team. Further driving home the point of how well the Colts draft, you can look to see how well departed players are doing, or have done in their careers.

So for further analysis, in the Polian era…

1997-Bertrand Berry (3rd round) was solid but not great, but was certainly good enough to have an 11 year career and an important role on the 2009 NFC champs
1998-Steve McKinney (4th) was a starter for the first five years of his career for the Colts, then Houston.
1999-Edgerrin James was never as good with Arizona as he was with Indy, but he’s a borderline hall of famer who’s been to the Super Bowl. We’ve all heard from Mike Peterson and his huge mouth by now. Luckily he’s no longer in the division but there’s no argument he’s had a good career.
2000-Marcus Washington (2nd round) has been a starter for the Redskins since they signed him in 2004
2002-David Thornton (4th) has been a starter for Tennessee since they signed him in 2006
2003-Cato June (5th), a five year starter in the league (2 w/ TB) will likely start for Houston this season
2004-Jake Scott (5th) was apparently good enough to convince the NFL to give the Colts a 4th round comp pick for him when he left via free agency last season…of course he’s in the division too

It’s easy to see that the Colts draft well. Besides the players on their own team, they’ve drafted at least one game changing, very important player who’s left for another team in almost all of the Polian drafts.

Haha

Just making sure I’m over the minimum word limit… as well as expressing my passion for the Colts :)

Funny

How one decent draft has, apparently, turned the Dolphins from a draft joke in four years to “nearly there” in five. Really? One year overrides four years of EPIC FAIL? I think Kirwin just went with the popular media stories at the moment – Ravens drafted a rookie QB and he started! Genius! Atlanta showed how much competant staff matter! Geniuses! Dolphins draft one decent year in five! That’s almost the best in the NFL! – and didn’t actually, y’know, think.

Just curious

How great would these drafts look if Peyton Manning wasn’t the Colts QB ?

by pksiv on May 3, 2009 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

The Patriots are on the list too

how great would their picks look without Brady.

If Brady is in Peyton’s league then the same logic applies to a team that was counted in the article.

It would largely depend

On who we’d drafted instead of him, and who we’d replaced him with.

Because if we’d taken, say, All-Pro tackle Kyle Turley instead, then taken that Tom Brady guy two years later in the fifth round, I’m gonna say things would have turned out OK. Maybe not Manning OK. But not bad.
