He's baaaaaaaack
The Colts have re-signed Ed Johnson, who got the quick hook last season after being arrested for marijuana possession.

well
If they are going to bring other players with their heads up their asses into camp, I guess bringing in one who actually proved he can be a starting-caliber player makes sense.

Suddenly I am very excited about this defense. That’s all kinds of depth for the front 7. If Hughes or Jennings can step up and the other DBs avoid injury, the backfield is set too, and suddenly this team looks scary good.
Teerlinck has to be loving life right now. I wonder if they can carry ten D Linemen on the 53 man now. That’d be fun.

Wouldn’t shock me if Muir and Mookie ended up not making the team now.
Can’t call this an embarassment of riches or anything, because we don’t know what the rookies will do, but man, there is plenty of reason for optimism.

I still say that A. Johnson will make the team.
Muir is on the outside looking in, but I think people underestimate how good Mookie was for the situation he was thrown into.

Prediction
I think Dawson is out, and I think Foster is now going to have to compete to make the team.
NT – Ed, Mookie, T Squared
UT – Moala, Grady, maybe Foster
Don’t forget we still have Brock and he most likely isn’t going anywhere.

I wonder how in shape he is
As a matter of fact, I wonder what all he has been doing for the past 8 or 9 months. I doubt he’ll be doing any interviews, but it sure would be interesting to hear from him.
In all likelihood, the Colts will just sweep his little incident under the rug and act like it never happened. After going almost a year without a paycheck, Big Ed has probably learned his lesson anyway.

I don't think this settles the bigs vs smalls at all yet
You could look at the Taylor/Moala/Johnson moves as upgrading the big DT spot.
They might be adding big DTs, not because they don’t like the small ones they have, but because the small ones they have played so well that they don’t feel they are set on small DTs and just need to upgrade their big guy options.

Eh
You go ahead and think that, but I still believe that they are doing an all around shift in philosophy on the DL, both for NTs and UTs. Foster may still make the team, but there are too many proven guys competing for spots now and I like what I see out of Grady so far and want to see what he can do too. I think Moala, Grady and Brock are going to have the upper hand over Foster and especially Dawson but we’ll see.

I dont mind seeing Foster on pass-rush only situations
But these guys are high school DT size, I love how they play hard and well for their size but I think with the talent the Colts have now theres not much of a reason for either to start

I dont think it spells out the end of small DT's either
the Colts have actually tried to acquire bigger DT’s. but each time they have, they got burned. Remember, the kind of DT’s we look for in this system are difficult to find. Not only do they have have to have power, but quickness. Most of the time you can only find a guy who has quikness without strength or vice-versa.
BTW, this may spell the end of Dawson, but I think Foster has a spot locked up on this team. If he was able to play NT last year and do pretty good for a guy who is 277, then I think its safe to assume he will play even better at 3 tech.
by metal_militia on May 5, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
pretty happy here in Seattle
Not sure we can carry that many DTs—if we do have so many, some will have to play ST like Reid did last few years, no? CAN they? That’s why extra DBs can always fill in on ST and return duties, etc… but DTs? I guess they can plug in as blockers.
Okay, so back to my “reasons for optimism” mantra all of our weaknesses from last year just keep getting better. QB health, still holding steady. RB health, same. DL quality and depth, improved.
Where is our next line of weaknesses? OL, particularly RG/RT. Maybe depth? Maybe LT. I’ll call Gonzo’s maturity a given, meaning that we’d still need a viable #3WR. So I’ll call OL uncertainty and WR depth our current weaknesses. LB depth? No, that’s pretty good. Not exactly all-stars, but they’re deep. Punter/holder is an unknown.
Man, if the Colts stay healthy this year, watch the F#@! out, NFL.

CB
Watching NFL replays every Sunday (most of which the Colts are on), the CB position is still something that concerns me a little. I think the upgrade at DT will have a trickle down effect on the LB play and, in turn, the CB and S play, but unless they play more man-to-man style, the 3rd and Long conversions will still be something to watch for.
I hope Coyer addresses that and I’m sure he will.

This is nuts.
Why did they resign him? Because Caldwell has a different position than Dungy on this type of thing? I mean, I don’t know how much I care one way or the other, but, if they were going to resign him this year, why the hell did they cut him last year?! He certainly would have been useful last season. It kinda pisses me off. I mean, when the Colts cut him last year, I got it. I didn’t really put too much thought into whether it was too harsh a punishment or not, because they were taking a legitimate position. Now, they just resign him the next year? I just don’t get it, unless this is all about a difference in Caldwell and Dungy.

Yeah, but . . .
What was the risk in keeping him on the roster last year? I mean, it’s not like they were like, “Hmm, should we cut Ed Lova or cut ‘so and so?’ Well let’s cut Ed Lova because he’s more of a risk.” There was no risk in keeping him. He was our best DT at the time. Are they saying that the league punishment just wasn’t enough? Like, the league grounded him from Nintendo for a week, but the Colts think he wouldn’t learn his lesson unless they took away the Nintendo and the phone? Now that he’s had a stiffer, “Colt’s” punishment, they can take him back, because he’s learned his lesson? Maybe I’m not looking at this the right way, but it just looks so inconsistent. All I’m saying is, cut him or don’t cut him last year, but if you are going to sign him the next year, I just can’t understand letting him go last year when we needed him 10x more than now. I don’t know, maybe Caldwell puffs.

I don't agree...
When there is a crime or violation of a contract clause, there must be punishment which is consistent with the crime. In Johnson’s contract there was a one-strike clause specific to use or possession of marijuana based on his problems in college. He violated that clause and was fired, per the agreement… contract ends. Now, after the crime has been punished consistent with contract, if the team wishes to give him “another chance,” with a new contract which also stipulates (I am sure) a one-strike and your out clause… I have no problem with that nor do I find any inconsistency in the approach. If he violates again, his NFL career will be over, for good.
by bamock on May 5, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree 100% with this move
I like Ed Johnson and I also feel that his marijuana violation was not any real violation. I don’t smoke Marijuana bought I also believe it should be legalized and so do a majority of Americans. Now if Ed had been caught getting in a fight and had to be “tazzed” then yeah he should not have been resigned, but this was the right thing to do in terms of football management and it was morally correct as well.
Welcome back Ed!

I’m not saying not to bring him back because he smoked weed. I really could care less. I just don’t understand cutting him last year and signing him this year. If it were the other way around in terms of need, I could understand the logic. If we cut him last year to prove a point, but, oh by the way, we didn’t really need him, but then later signed him because our 2 top DTs went down, there’s logic there. The reward outweighs the risk. I guess I’m now just pissed that they cut him last year. Really, more confused than anything . . .

I believe that the lack of interest from other teams means that this is Ed’s last chance and i think the guy is gonna play with a HUGE chip on his shoulder.
This move is also going to send a msg to the rookies and Mookie that they are going to have to earn their spot on the team and nothing is guaranteed.
The only thing that scares me is all these moves after rookie camp… Did they not like what they saw?

This year might just be the reverse of last year—
at the end of the season, we were worried about strength at DT, but thanks to events occurring in the offseason, we have good reason to be optimistic about the position.

FANTASTIC!
I think the Colts handle the situation perfectly, they stayed true to their word, punished him and now they have given him a second chance because they believe he has learnt his lesson.
It so hard to pick who will make the squad out of all the DTs we now have and this is going to make camp all the more exciting. Can you imagine the intense competition that will be going on between all the DTs? Each of them should be highly motivated to working harder to beat out the competition because all of them should realise that the Colts will play the best performing DT regardless of where he was drafted/picked up and therefore their position on the team is not secure. This just excellent for team. I’m so excited!!!

Hopefully he stayed in shape and is ready to play. How can anyone not be excited about this D? How much will this D get the ball back in the hands of the man, #18? WOW!
