Even Sidney Crosby was being a bitch in the final

After game 1, he took a subtle shot with his stick to the legs of a Red Wing.

really

really, really unnecessary vitriol aimed at LeBron.

What has he done to earn such hate? After experiencing one of the biggest let downs of his life, he wanted to be alone. That’s all.

He didn’t shake hands. He didn’t field questions. Why is this such a terrible offense?

LeBron is an amazing player and has been amazing for the league. What has he ever done to reflect poorly on the league? He’s been immaculate, and if you want to act like this one transgression makes him a piece of scum, well, I dub thee ‘hater.’

I don’t even really like the guy. But this is just completely unfair.

he's an entertainer

it’s part of his job to talk to the media.

by shake n bake on Jun 1, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really...

Harrison never talks to the media…he is not paid to…he is paid to play. I have to agree above, this is really minor in the grand scheme…Manning would probably be vilified more, but this really is not that big a deal. By the way BBS…I too hate, I mean hate the NBA….NHL on the other hand I love.

Piling on...

I have mixed emotions on LeBron’s behavior after the loss. For some reason, I’m ok with his not wanting to talk to the press, but not ok with his snubbing the Magic. They all come out with love-you fist-bumps at the beginning of every game but for a guy who appeared in a commercial about love, patience and sportsmanship, it went out the door when he got his butt handed to him on a platter.

As for the media, I think the expectation is just too high for a 24-year-old. Many live up to it, but most can’t.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Jun 1, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agreed there...

Not speaking to the press is no biggie…the shaking hands is a different story. You said exactly how I feel…he was crushed and made a bad decision. He is young and will learn from his mistake. But I still stand by my contention that in the grand scheme of things LeBron James is one of the good guys in the NBA and I hope that this is not one incident that he is known for.

by TRDean on Jun 1, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Marvin isn't one of the top couple players in the league.

LeBron is the equivalent of a Peyton/Brady in media attention. If either of them did that they’d get the same kind of backlash.

by shake n bake on Jun 1, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He isn't now

But he was at one point. And he didn’t talk to the media then, either.

by slash196 on Jun 1, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

he was never the center of attention that LeBron is, Marv was overshadowed by other WRs for most of his career

when you are that good and the focus of that much attention the expectation is that you’ll talk to the media.

This is the guy who says his life goal is to be a “global icon”, now he’s just there to play the game?

by shake n bake on Jun 1, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Only thing I can think is

if LBJ didn’t want out of Cleveland before, he sure does now.

by slash196 on Jun 1, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

True but you are creating a double standard...

IMarvin was not the center of attention because of his stance with the press.

If Brady or Manning lost a big game and didn’t talk to the press I contend that there would be some backlash…but not too bad. I also recall early in Mannings career, the Colts lost a game and Manning was very upset at his teammates staying on the field smiling, laughing, with the other team. Interesting eh?

by TRDean on Jun 1, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's a double standard

I think it’s the cost of being that high profile of an athlete. In exchange for the fame and the endorsements they have to put themselves in the spotlight off the court as well as on it.

by shake n bake on Jun 1, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously?

This is hard to understand? Let me break it down for you. Marvin Harrison NEVER talked to the media. He preferred to stay private, that was his choice from the beginning and there was no pulling punches about it. Accordingly, if Marvin never talked to the media and the Colts lost a playoff game and Marvin didn’t talk to the media, there is no story, there is no signal that someone is being a sore loser.

In Lebron’s case, he loves the spotlight and constantly engages the media. An action to ignore, or otherwise avoid the media is clearly pouting and/or losing poorly. No one has made the claim that it is every professional athletes responsibility to be an active participant in the media. When a player chooses to be an active member and snubs them because he’s throwing a temper tantrum, you all an ace an ace.

Totally right, if this is considered an offense now

Then, when a player punches another one after losing a game, what would it be?

Life is full of disappointment...

It’s an incredible offense for two reasons: 1) it is a mark of a man’s maturity how he handles himself in victory and defeat, his actions are not going to win any “maturity” marks anytime soon, 2) in professional sports the key word is professional. Even if you’re an immature person, you should be professional enough to handle winning and losing gracefully, disappointment or no. I would expect this kind of thing from a bratty kid in high school who’s not yet learned how to handle winning and losing with poise, but from the league’s biggest name and face, it is unfortunate.

I believe he’s the best basketball player the league has seen since Michael Jordan, potentially. But if he has this kind of attitude on the court, if it should continue, he will never be half the man Jordan was. Regardless of Jordan’s off the field troubles, whatever they were.

Three months away from the start of training camp?

I think you may want to re-calculate that. Here’s something to help you out ;-)

I just dont get it. When the Colts lost to the Chargers last january, I criticized Clint Session for an attitude similar to LeBron James’, acting like a punk, “yelling” to a camera man, etc. Everybody came with that “what did you expect him to do? Celebrate?” With Session, it was understandable. Now, with LeBron its simply unforgivable. Im not defending James, its just wrong, but so was Session and nobody said a word about it.

Hell nah

I too hate the NBA….the foul calls, the good for nothing HOOD RATS that have no decency whatsoever…But the hate of Lebron has got to go. The dude is 24 years old and came straight out of high school and jumped into the NBA and has yet to do anything to show immaturity or bad demeanor. It wasn’t ok for him to just leave his team but the dude was pissed off, averaging over 40 points in a series just to lose…He will have some public apology by the end of the day (if there isn’t one already). He’s a stand up guy at the age of 24 compared to the older guys that are all trash. if your going to bring up the nba and call it shi* ill side with you all day. Thanks for the update though…Keep up the great work.

Don't hate on the NBA

It’s the only thing we have in Oregon until the MLB wises up. The Blazers have really cleaned themselves up and are now one of the top teams in the league with Brandon Roy a complete class act.

Concerning the Lebron issue

I think a lot of people are blowing this way out of proportion. I will admit I think showing poor sportsmanship kinda irked me. I don’t think it would have been that bad for him to congratulate the Magic, which whom he is friends with a lot of their players. But I’m not going to chastise him for it.

As for him snubbing the media, I thought it was pretty funny. The media is full of pricks for the most part anyways(a sentiment shared by nearly everyone who reads this site), so why you people are railing him for giving them the finger is beyond me.

True on Bron, but...

It’s unfair to compare him to the NFL’s favorite poster children. Manning aside, one of the most successful franchises of this decade, the New England Patriots, have publicly displayed bush league-ness on numerous occasions, and no one outside of us Indy fans ever says anything about it. Check these out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD1GiJEi1cY&feature=PlayList&p=DA1CB8905A886749&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=51

and

and, just to show that this has been going on for a while now…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7O8blx9dcQ&NR=1

Maybe it’s just something in the water in Cleveland.

The problem is, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady a certified a-holes (and attempted murderers…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dgu88gvaySw) while Lebron is just a competitive kid who’s too young and immature to know how to classily handle losing like guys like Dan Marino and Peyton Manning have. Don’t hate, he’ll get there.
