Brady healthier to start '09 than Manning in '08?
You know it's been a long offseason when I'm writing about Tom Brady, but his injury status has me thinking a bit. I may be way off on this, but wouldn't it be irrelevant to compare Bradys recovering time + perfomance for the start of the '09 season to Palmer's recoving time + performance during the start of his '06 season? I could be wrong, but it seems like I've been hearing the comparisons of, "oh look how Palmer performed, it took him 8-10 weeks to start playing good the following year after he got injured so it will be the same with Brady". Ok not quite like that but you get my point. Even though Palmer injured his knee the last game of the season for his team, he started the first game the following year with a difference of a about 8 months in between. Palmer did not start playing like his usual self until say week 10 of that same year which is an additional 2 months for a total 10 months all together since his knee incident. Palmer threw for 10 tds with only 2 ints between weeks 10-13 and threw for an average of 306 yds per game during that same span in '06 the year after his serious injury. It would be well over 10 months for Brady when he makes his first start back ( about 1 year for all you geniuses) including training camp reps. Granted every player heals differently especially with this type of injury, it's not out of the question for Brady to produce at a very efficient level still. I'm really not looking for Brady to stuggle as much as say Peyton did last year to start the season. Even though Brady's injury was more serious, the timing for Manning's injury was worse when comparing the start of Manning's season last year to the start of Brady's season this year. With that said, to say Brady will compete for his '07 passing records like some "experts" have mentioned is crazy and shows how these "experts" have short memories. Manning wasn't even close to his 49 TD record the following year just because NFL teams adjust, plain and simple. I really have no conclusion so Go Colts!

I was about to delete this poll thinking that it was obvious that Brady will be more game ready than Manning in ’08, but I guess I was wrong. However, I do think Brady will more game ready given the time frame he has had compared to Mannings injury and the little time he had toprepare for that first game.

The phrase "game ready" makes it interesting
Brady missed an entire season (8 minutes of week one doesn’t count), while Manning hasn’t missed a start. That’s a significant difference between the two QBs and some very serious rust for Brady to shake off – regardless of how diligent he’s been in rehab and the offseason, or how competitive he is.
“Game ready” for Manning consisted of physical readiness. For Brady, it’s more than that because he missed a year of playing and being directly involved. I don’t think that fact can be discounted. Plus, he’s agreed to wear a knee brace this season even though he clearly doesn’t like it. No matter what any reporter or former player or anyone says, the answer will come on the field in September.
Keep the faith!

Brady does have some serious rust to shake off.
However, like ColtsFanNChiTown mentioned, the timing is much better for Brady. Peyton missed training camp and started the season just 4 weeks off of his second surgery. He was clearly not ready to start. Stiff, etc. Then you add the rehab he had to do which took time away from practicing with his receivers…its amazing he did as well as he did.
I think Brady may have some timing issues; may have some issues with velocity and accuracy while he’s adjusting at first. But by the time we meet in November, he should be back to form. dammit.

I think Brady is not as ready as Peyton was. Brady missed pretty much an entire season while Manning only missed pre-season stuff.

I think you just made argument sort of speak depending on how you look at the question and argument. Brady’s injury overall was worse and no doubt that he will be rusty to start out, but he has a chance to get that rust off of him during training camp and pre-season games. Manning on the other hand was rushed onto the field post surger(ies) and wasn’t able to knock off that rust which is what Brady will be able to do. Manning “only miss[ing] pre-season stuff” really hurt the team during the start of the ‘08 season while Brady missing the entire year last year shouldn’t have as much as an effect than him missing this year’s “pre-season stuff”. I think the timing argument for me is what will make Brady more game ready than what Manning was last year.

There might also be something to be said
for the fact that Manning had pressure to maintain some level of discretion about his surgeries. Brady’s injury was on display for the world to see, so expectations are already low to begin with (though growing quickly with the recent press).
How can you not love a team that does this?

Brady's Health - 2009
Throughout the 2007/08 season Brady showed us why he’s the best QB in the business. Less than ten minutes in the 2008/09 campaign Brady gets taken out, he suffers a career threatening injury to the left knee. The question is: how long (if ever) will it take Brady to regain the skills that made him the best? We have to expect that it will take a few (4 or 5?) real football games (not pre-season stuff) to get him up to speed – and that’s if all goes well with the surgically repaired knee.
Manning struggled in the first half of last year after a less-than-career threatening injury, there’s no reason to believe that Brady won’t go through the same struggle. The thing is, a rusty Tom Brady is probably better than most of the other, ready-to-go QB’s in the NFL.

I agree with everything you said
Except Brady is not the best in the biz. I’ll take #18. Haha.
Seriously, though, Mobility wise, he will be fine. He will be very rusty game wise, maroney is coming off an injury, too, welker and moss are not only two years older than they were in ‘07, but defenses have had two years to adjust to them. A good chunk of their defense is gone, their offensive coordinator is gone (though you don’t hear squat about McDaniels’ effect on NE, but when Moore leaves even though he doesn’t, the “experts” say we’re through. ha.) Will Brady be effective? Of course he will. But the league has adjusted, and even though most of the media (like all of ESPN and NFLN) think they will be 16-0* team they were, it won’t happen. And when it doesn’t, and Brady doesn’t throw 45+ TDs, they will blame it on the injury.
