McDaniels has taken a team with a potent offense, but in need of a defensive retooling, and gone to full rebuild mode.

Seattle got a steal

Denver could be the worst team in the AFC West, which is saying something. No way they finish above 6-10.

Ravens, Jets

Maybe the Bears can do it. That would be hilarious. Denver sends all of their good players to Chicago and gets draft picks to use on players who don’t fit the system.

I think it’s funny how the drama has shifted the “in need of a defensive retooling” towards putting all the focus (or at least a lot of it for now) on the offensive side :)

Maybe the guys on D can play with less pressure? But I mean what’s so bad about rebuild mode? Just because you Colts fans get a team that has been consistently on the top (or at least close to it) in recent years doesn’t mean you have to bash rebuilding teams. ;-) (only kidding of course)

Appreciate your sympathies. I personally wasn’t too keen on McDaniels coming in and beginning this “disaster,” but like all good fans I’m ready to sit it out and wait…or at least I think I am haha. Hopefully you guys are having a successful, happy and uneventful (in terms of all this MSM drama at least) offseason.

I think blowing it up was a terrible choice

because all of us over here have seen a team with a great offense dragged down by a terrible defense get it together defensively and excel. Building an effective pass offense would be my first priority if I was running a team. The Broncos had that, plus a consistently great running attack (#3 priority in my book), they just needed a defense. They had a few great pieces for a pass D (priority #2 for me) in Champ and Elvis.

To me it looks like either McDaniels is rubbing the players the wrong way making them jump ship, or that he is willing to tear the offense down to build the defense. Either way a mistake in my mind.

Yeah, I obviously don't think he did it intentionally

…It’s kind of hard to explain why players act immaturely like this in such a situation. I personally am willing to put the blame more on the players themselves than on the organization…okay maybe almost all of the blame on the players themselves. I don’t know if anyone can explain what set Cutler off. I guess it was the whole Cassel thing? Or preferring Shanny? Then maybe Marshall followed suit and figured if Cutler could “boss the team around” so could he?

I guess why it happens doesn’t matter. As much as I’d like to, I can’t blame McDaniels completely for this. Now all that’s left to do is wait it all out. Still a long ways to go (I guess three months is sort of a long way…especially for people who cannot wait to get to football season like myself). So we’ll see what happens.

Glad you guys at least have had a peaceful coaching transition in comparison. :)

Way to be positive

and polite on a Colts site where we are knocking your organization. I wish you the best going forward.

Thank you..

and I also continue to wish you and your fellow fans the same. Indy is a respectable organization and Stampede Blue is a great site. I shall continue to read the posts here and hope that nothing of the sort (of drama) happens to the Colts. Best of luck this season.

Boo McDaniels

He is a tool and has torn apart this franchise.

I suppose that's one way of managing first season expectations

“Yo Bill, I don’t think I can handle all this Superbowl pressure. We should trade away Peyton, Reggie, Dallas, Bob and our DE’s so that I can have some time to build my own team.”

Inspired coaching hire, Denver.

Hate to make this about the Pats

But this is just another one of the Belichick leaves of his coaching tree that has not bloomed at all. Two of his disciples, Charlie Weis and Josh McDaniels, have taken two of the most storied organizations/programs in American football and run them down the gutter, into nearly unprecendented lows. I’m sure Pat Bowlen would like a mulligan. I thought they should have kept Bates at OC, and hired Spags, but they decided to become the fifth franchise/program to go with a Belichick disciple, and so far those are 0-3 (soon to be 0-4 and unless the Mangenius can work magic in Cleveland 0-5).

Some may say that this is more proof of Belichick’s genius, that he did it with little help, but to me, one of the biggest factors for a Coach is the tree he leaves. That is partly why Dungy is one of the all-time greats, as he has spawned successful coach after successful coach (Lovie Smith, Herm (kinda successful), and even Mike Tomlin). That is a major reason why I consider Bill Walsh to be the greatest coach ever, as nearly half the league is from the Walsh tree.

How

can you say that Denver is in the gutter?? The season hasn’t even begun and you’re gonna say the Broncos are all done. McDaniels hasn’t even had the chance to prove himself yet. Cutler is a bitch and from all accounts, Marshall was acting like a douche too. Denver has been riding on the memories of Elway for too long, it’s about time the organization was “shaken up”. Cutler had many chances to get them to the Superbowl and couldn’t deliver. I don’t give a sh*t what happens in the off season, it’s what happens during the season that counts. And if the Broncos wanna win, they won’t care who got dumped to facilitate that attitude.

lol dear god

I’ll let someone else do the honors of picking your argument apart, but that was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.

Cutler had many chances to get them to the Superbowl and couldn’t deliver. hahah

Yeah, so I sold out, do something about it! Like read my site Colts Chatter.

I was unaware that 2 and 1/3rd seasons

was many chances at a superbowl. And that it’s enough time to give up on a quarterback.

And both of Cutler’s full seasons he played very well, but his defense was awful.

2. When you put thermite and blocks of ice together, you get a big boom. Nobody really knows why.

3. The Colts' (Indy and Baltimore's) all-time franchise record is 438-428-8. So, the Colts' just recently (2007 season) broke .500. That really tells you how bad the Colts were before Peyton.

Getting rid of Marshall was correct

Brandon Marshall is a cancer and he is over-rated. In addition the guy is injury prone. This was the right move unlike the Cutler move which was dumb.

'Great Offense'??

2007 – 21st in points
2008 – 16th in points

Both years the Broncos were behind the Bears in scoring. Last year the Broncos finished behind the Patriots in scoring.

Talent, yes. Execution, no.

As for McDaniels, this situation has nothing to do with him. Marshall knows he has huge risk, and knows he won;t get targeted TWO HOUNDRED TIMES like he did last season. Oh, and there is that little issue with the CBA coming up, where service time could go from 4-6 years, meaning Marshall won’t be a UFA after this season, not to mention a serious arm injury that kept him off the field last summer and the hip injury. A wide receiver with a balky arm and leg.

I ask you guys….Would you, if it were YOUR money, pay him $20-$30 mill guaranteed???

10th and 5th in DVOA

I didn’t see the 2008 Broncos as a team that needed to be blown up and re-built from scratch, but that’s what is happening, and I blame the new guy.

the difference between points and DVOA is in the drive stats

The Broncos had the 3rd fewest (2008) and 8th fewest (2007) offensive drives in the league. That’s a phenomenon we are very familiar with around here. It happens when your D can’t get off the field.

I agree about the defense...

100%. The offense is the strength and games have to be played, and called, with that in mind. That means ball-control, time consuming drives. Move the chains. PROTECT THE FOOTBALL and most importantly score points in the Red Zone.

I think the Broncos turned the ball over 7 times inside the Red Zone last year, 8 if you include the Hochuli play. Only 6% of Marshall’s catches the past two years have gone for TDs. Hell, Calvin Johnson, playing for an 0-16 team, converted 15% of his catches in TDs.

If people want to bash McDaniels, fine, but with the offensive talent he had at his disposal last year his Pats offense scored more than the Broncos. That, when considering the Broncos had more talent offensively.

The problem was somewhere, and at 24-24 the past 3 years, something wasn’t working.

Pretty harsh on Marshall

To be compared negatively to the best young receiver in the NFL.

He doesn’t have to be as good as Calvin Johnson.

And there is no way the Broncos had more talent offensively. Cutler’s better than Brady-lite, of course, but Marshall isn’t better than either of New England’s main two receivers and whilst their running game is better, they still went through five starters last season – and managed to finish 5th in adjusted efficiency.

Their offense wasn’t the problem.

Calvin Johnson is a beast.

Not a fair comparison.

Lucky for me...

since I’m not a fan of DVOA, scoring points is still what wins. The Broncos didn’t do that. All those yards account for nothing when, during the past 32 games, the Broncos scored 19 or less 14 times. Some offense…..

they didn't do a great job of turning yard into points

9th and 17th in points per drive, but they were 32nd and 29th in average starting position (again the D making the O’s life very difficult).

Seriously, check out FO’s drive stats page it’s great for people that don’t like the “black box” and abstract output elements of DVOA

No,

but mostly because I’d never convince a bank to give a $30 million loan to an 18 year old high school graduate with a full set of the Colts’ 2006 season tickets as my only collateral.

Personally...

Unless the Broncos get blown away — 1st and 3rd or 1st and a serviceable player, they aren’t going to trade him. Just my opinion….
