Jim Irsay spends more money on the Colts than most owners do for their respective teams
It's no shock that known spending buffoons Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder top the list of owners who spend the most on their teams. Also in the top three is Microsoft gazillionaire Paul Allen. But did you know that the fourth most "committed cash" by an owner to his team (how much each team spent in actual dollars on player costs) is Colts owner Jim Irsay. How's that for a small market owner!

Paul Allen
Hey, he recently sold 28,000 shares of what had formerly been his flagship company, Charter Communications, for under $1,000. Hard to say this with a straight face about a billionaire, but the guy is hurting financially. Uh, relatively speaking.
We Colts fans are so damn lucky to have Jim Irsay. He spends what it takes and gets good value out of his expenditures. Just like money cannot buy taste, it cannot buy NFL success. For that, you need brains and discipline as well. Polian has been a great right hand man. Counting blessings….
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

The key is in the "good value"
more bang for the buck. Without a cap, will Jerry Jones ever be able to buy a Super Bowl? I doubt it.
Keep the faith!

amen to bobmans comments.
when I hear selective bashing of jim irsay you know the comments are coming from ignorance
this guy taking over for his dad who was “not” that good of a person and turning the franchise around almost miraclously doesnt get enough credit. the hirings he has done, the players he has drafted with the help of his hirings, with THE CLASS THAT defines this team…I dare anybody to compare or find somebody who has done more for their team than jim irsay. I mean all around from top to bottom.
sure its easy to say we drafted peyton and that why but how many players chosen no.1 have done what peyton has done? the fact that the media and scouts even pretending ryan leaf was worthy of the no 1. pick shows you have many dumbass owners and coaches there are out there

How many No. 1 pick busts are there?
I think the Colts probably know that as well as anybody. To cast a wider net, let’s make it top-5 picks. I bet we had more than any other team for about a decade span, say from 1979 (sorry to include the last, sad Balt years, but I had to include the winless, strike-shortened 1982 season) through 1993 or so. We did not get very good production/value from all those lottery picks—they team hardly improved over that time—not sure if they won more than 87 games in any one season for a 14- or 15-year span. Then Jim Irsay takes the reins, brings in guys like Polian, Tom Moore, etc, and our now first round picks tend to accumulate near the end of the round. Peyton was a phenomenal pick at #1, Edge at #4, Freeney at #11. All the rest were, because of the team’s success, roughly slots 25-32. And aside from Rob Morris, who was a solid if unspectacular and underappreciated player, they have all contributed very well. Good value.
The thing that kills me is that there is no single way to do it—we do it almost exclusively through the draft, the Pats have used free agency a ton. There are teams that rely on the draft hevily and fail, as do some teams that rely on FA. It’s not the methodology, it’s the application of the ideas. This has gotten a little off-track from Irsay, but to bring it back, to him, it’s the people he hires and the mission statement he instils in the organization that makes it work. We really are very lucky, as are Pats fans for Kraft, Steelers fans for the Rooneys, etc. To quote Spinal Tap: “I envy me.” At least in this regard.
