Post Minicamp Roster Prediction

I haven't done a roster prediction in a while, and there is no better time than after minicamp.  This will be tough, especially for the D-line.  It is in order by depth chart as always and I'm including numbers too.  There will be a lot of changes because of rookies and signings.  This team won't be too similar to the team last year, but it will be much better.  The defensive tackles are so deep, and there are too many corners to handle.

I really don't believe Keyunta Dawson is getting cut

but besides that I’m with you.

I don’t buy that a guy who’s started 18 games in his first two seasons is getting pushed totally off the roster in favor of 3 guys who haven’t played a down in the league and a guy Dawson played over last year.

Change these hundreds for me cashier, Cuz I ain't made it yet, but I'm better off than last year

I would agree, but

Nobody’s guaranteed a spot. If Dawson just isn’t as good as the other DTs, he’ll get cut. I gotta be honest, I always saw him as a starter of necessity, not talent. I mean, Hagler was a starter for a season too, does that mean Wheeler won’t be given a shot at the starting spot?

Dawson

Will likely take Thomas’ spot as the other run stopping DE.

LE – Freeney, Dawson, Howard
RD – Mathis, Brock, Johnson

“Hagler was a starter for a season too, does that mean Wheeler won’t be given a shot at the starting spot?”

No but I think it’s a pretty good bet the Hagler is making the roster (which is what I was saying about Dawson).

When Hart comes off PUP,

who do you predict gets knocked off the roster?

by coltsfanawalt on Jun 10, 2009 12:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd guess a lineman

10 OL +2 on the PS
12 DL +1 on the PS.

That’s a lot.

Silva

Sadly, I agree that Hughes and Coe will not make the cut, but I’m not convinced as far as Jamie Silva goes. With Darrell Reid gone, I have a feeling the coaches are scrutinizing special teams abilities even more than ever. With that in mind, letting Grady or Lewis sit on the bench for most of the year doesn’t make any sense when they could easily have an above average special teams player like Silva on the team.

Hughes

I think if he is given a chance to play more man coverage, either with the Colts or another team, he will succeed. I can see him joining another team and playing at a high level.

IMO-

Jaimie Thomas has a good chance of making the game-day roster, and that Hall probably won’t. I agree that Lewis is a keeper, but he isn’t better or more promising than Thomas.
I also think it’s too early to give up on Hughes, and that Silva and Jordan Senn should make at least the practice squad, while Matthews, Barnes, and Brandon Foster will not.
They won’t cut Senn loose and keep Tauilili.

Oh, and I think they'll keep Daniel Muir before they do Kuntz

unless he really lights it up in training camp.
Muir has prototypical size for a NT, and we aren’t short of small, fast UT types like Kuntz

I don't think Senn is eligible for the PS

If I remember right guys can’t be on the PS if they’ve been on the active roster for 8+ weeks in one season.

They must have lowered it

I know it was 8 last year. They are definitely making the PS a place for UDFAs to grow.

6 is an "accrued NFL season"

from what I found, and players with one of those can’t be on the PS.

I could be wrong, I just googled it instead of looking through the CBA.

I think Hughes has a chance to beat out Rushing at CB

We have to see how well Rushing and Marlin play comming of major injuries.

OH NO WE SUCK AGAIN!

DT, Under Tackle, Nose Tackle?

What’s the real differences between an Under Tackle and just a Defensive Tackle? The nose sits directly over the center and is responsible for trying to penetrate and forcing two defenders to block him right?

Under tackles have a one gap assignment and are typically lined up on the left shoulder of center and left should of right guard?

Is this right or is there more to it, or am I way off base?

That's pretty close

To boil it down to general terms, nose tackle is a space eater. Under tackle is a player who penetrates the o-line via the one gap.

Tim Jennings

Great article, I love to see roster predictions for different teams, especially now that we are in the full swing of the offseason.

One suggestion though, I really think that Tim Jennings played well last season (other than a few bone headed plays). I think they will want to get him on the field as much as possible, and that probably means ahead of TJ Rushing, who has been injured.

I'm sure T-Jen gets a spot

He really played great last season, made a couple fine picks. He’s built to play the nickel.

Tim Jennings played great? Did you watch the Green Bay game?

Yeah, so I sold out, do something about it! Like read my site Colts Chatter.

by KingRichard on Jun 10, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I did

I also watched the Pittsburgh game. Yeah, Jennings has his share of weak spots, but I think his mistakes stemmed from inexperience rather than inability.

I don't buy 10 OL to start the year...

Assuming the Oline is basically healthy to start the year (big IF I know) I can’t see them carrying 10OL to start the season, especially 6 interior lineman, when 8 of those 10 you listed can play guard.

And though I’d really hate to see the Colts hold a roster spot for a 3rd string QB I’m not sure they will risk Painter to the PS, especially if he shows anything in pre-season. Keep in mind as well game day actives are important too and Painter as the emergency QB is a “freebie” for the game day roster.

I gotta think that 12 DL is probably pushing it too. C.Howard or Grady would be the most likely to be PS’d.

I’m thinking the team has more classically carried more DB’s for ST’s in the past which would bode well for Silva and Hughes. Hall better shine in STs because based on the commentary from players and coaches he isn’t shining at WR, and with this team deep at so many other positions he isn’t likely to make the cut unless he’s “Don Beebe” good at STs.

Mike Hart

If Hart doesn’t step up after coming off pup he will possibly get cut. RB will be one of the most interesting positions to watch all season, with the emphasis on improving the running game. Acl injuries are tough to bounce back from for this key position.

special teams

I agree with a lot of these projections, the only two people I think will make it that aren’t here is Senn and Silva. They are special teams aces and besides there are only 9 DBS and 6 LBS. I think that Lewis and Grady would b the ones that got cut

by Colts Live Free or Die! on Jun 10, 2009 2:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If I were doing one

it would look the same but with Lewis dropped for Silva or Hughes, and Grady dropped for Dawson.

Senn is replaced by Seward

Silva was someone who I almost put on there, but he is someone who would be the first injury signing for sure. The offensive line’s injury problems is why I have 10 linemen. I do see 10 guys that would make up a good special teams unit though.

Who Returns Punts and Kick Offs?

Does Rushing do it again in 09? Is he even healthy?

by Believe in Blue on Jun 10, 2009 2:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

if Rushing is healthy he should do punts

Him, Garcon and Collie (made even Don) can fight it out to be the KR
